DeadBurgerKing (10) Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 I need to quit...it's too expensive. And untop of that it's not really helping my health...so does anyone got some good tips that actually work?
n0Mad Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Just stop doing that. You may think I'm joking, but I'm not. Screw the gum, patches, lozenges, hypnosis, or any sort of system. Just finish off your last pack and vow never to buy any more or bum off of anyone. Just stop doing it. The first two weeks will be hell and you'll want one like no other. But if your willpower is strong enough and you really want to quit (most people who say they want to quit really don't) then you'll tough it out. Eventually the nausea, headaches, cravings, shakes, etc. will go away and you'll have quit. Granted, it's really easy to start back up again so find some sort of anchor (study NLP) to remind you how much you really don't like smoking anymore. There's another thread around here someplace with some great advice by a lot of people. Anyone know the link?
ManicQueen Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Good for you for wanting to quit! I quit smoking about 12 weeks ago. Like Spook said, the first 2 weeks are tough but managable. I do recommend chewing gum *sugar-free* and suckers and also drink lots of water. Those are what worked for me. Try to stay away from the patches and nicotine gum becuase those contain nicotine and they only defeat the purpose. Good luck! I hope this works out for you. =)
kellygrrrrrl Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Doing NRT's (nicotine Replacement Therapy) will only prolong the addiction. Upon removing the last patch, chewing the last piece of gum or even lozenge, you will still have to go through a 72 hour detox. Kowing what to expect is half the battle...and learning how to deal or cope with the cravings is key. You may not know what the craving actually feels like until approx. 12 hours after your last nicotine introduction to your blood. Let me explain....I am on day 8 and finally feeling somwhat back to myself. It is truley a battle between you and you. You know why you want to quit...you have your reasons. REMEMBER them because as soon as that first withdrawal attack hits, you WILL forget very quickly why you wanted to quit in the 1st place. You hate yourself for denying yourself the one thing that will make the cravings stop. You might feel an INTENSE urge to cry, hit something/yourself, scream, it's like that "i'm about to get on the tallest rollercoaster ever" feeling in the pit of your stomach. It's a horrible feeling. When feeling so bad the natural reacdtion is to make it stop and do whatever it takes to not have that feeling anymore. THIS is the feeling that will either make you or break you. If you give in and have just one cigarette, you will have to detox it all over again. Your cravings that you had on day one day 2 and day 3 will be as intense as they were if not worse than when you initially quit. ONE smoke will do you in. Believe me. I tried. Please see this site honey...it really did help me. Read it. It is VERY informational. When you are in the middle of an attack and pissed off like nothing you've ever expirience, I know no-smoking propaganda is the last thing you want to see, but trust me. And trust me, you will be pissed..... You will feel so out of control... I think knowing this is crucial. GO HERE: http://www.whyquit.com/
Brenda Starrr Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 I'm trying, and it's hard. It sucks. But, I'm going to feel better. That's what matters to me. I just look for projects to do around the house. I'm going to paint my upstairs bathroom.
holliwood66 Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Been months and months now...I occasionally stumble and have 1/2 a cig...maybe once every couple months. I am going to stop that tho *too easy to fall back into it again*. whyquit is a great site to check on periodically - keeps the quitting desire fresh. I also recommend not using NRT - expensive, and just prolongs the pain. After the 5 day detox, it is just mental adjustments.
