I f***ing hate that!  I'm a delivery driver.  We charge a small delivery fee ($.10-$.40) per item delivered, so most people hear the words 'delivery fee', and think that goes to the driver.  I don't see a single cent of the actual delivery fee.

I get a 5% DMR (driver maintenance recompensation) on every delivery I take.  If you do the math, I get about 50 cents per delivery when you factor a $10 average delivery cost.  at the end of the day, it barely covers my gas, if that.  I have to force a smile and say thank you when I have people open up the door and exclaim, "Wow, that was fast!", and then give me their 50 cents in change from a ten dollar bill.  Somebody did that today, as I was watching him count past $100's to get to his smaller bills.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

We all love the 50% tips and they tend to make our day but on a normal average day All type of services have an amount they would like to get, basically, when i was a waitress at an average place I would like to see atleast 20% of the total bill for good average service. I was gratefull for any tip i got i just like to average about 20% of my total sale ya know.

What i dont know is what the average for other services would be. So for you as a delivery person what percetage do you like to see?

TO go even further what about the stylist, nail tech, make up artist or valet what is the average percentage those who do the work would like to see come in for good service.

I do tip BTW Probally to much at times but i know how it feels not to get a tip for stupid reasons so i like to make (insert service type person here) day.

I do try to tip good.

However, don't you think some places are getting a little silly with the tip jars?

They have tip jars everywhere now. I saw a dry cleaner with a tip jar. Pretty soon the guy bagging my groceries will have a tip pocket on his shirt.

i try to stick with 20% if service is ok, 10-15% if it was sub-par, zero, if the person was an ass/a bitch, and up to 30% if they were above average.

except going out to the bar when i'm paying cash. i'll typically tip a dollar a drink if i'm bar-hopping, or the change, if it's more than 50 cents. if i run a tab, it's back to the "20%" rule...

hair stylists, etc, are a bit different, and it depends on the quality of work, how comfortable they made me feel, and the overall cost...

i have, on one or two rare occasions, left a change-tip in a full glass of water, which i then proceeded to cover with a napkin and turn iupside-down on the table, so that if they want it, they have to spill the water everywhere!

i'm sorry, but damn! don't be such a raging bitch!! :blink

I tip 15% for average service. Great serice gets you $20 or 25% which ever is greater. If it's poor service.. well.. the scale goes down fast...

I have left a $5 tip in pennies... There was this hanging lamp with cut glass panels over the table... the pennies were along the edges of the lamp... she tried getting them down when we were still at the counter paying... as soon as she touched the light... it rained pennies... god that was funny.

Ok, that was a lie.

Ted... Do you work where you get tips? I have a jar of pennies in my truck with your name on it.

We don't do tip jars. That IS cheesy.

And Ted, you're cracking me up.

I dont tip, unless they are amazing, an i mean amazing. I think like mr. pink from resivoir dogs. Also, people who work for tips should know that it is always a gamble, if they arent willing to take that chance, they shouldnt take the job in the first place.

And i will never become a waiter for that reason, becuase I know im not the only one who thinks that way.

Yeah, when those waitresses turn down a promotion to CEO or movie star or NBA point guard, they totally deserve whatever's NOT coming to them, tip-wise. It's all their fault for taking the waitressing job, y'know. =P

Yeah. I mean, come on, Slaugh. Aren't you beingh a bit harsh! No, it's not a question. Perhaps holier-than-thou. Yeah.......

What they need to do is not even tell them there is a delivery fee.  Just calculate it into the total cost.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

That could work for a single restaurant that delivers, but not for a service that delivers for several restaurants, like Take Out Taxi or Special Delivery... which is the only way I ever get food delivered.

I always tip waitstaff & delivery drivers 'cos I know they rely on tips for a substantial part of their income. A lot of people truly don't realize that, tho. And a lot of folks don't know you're supposed to tip at salons, etc. I'm kind of just coming to realize that myself & now feel really bad for all the times I didn't (altho I really didn't do salons much until about 5 years ago when my hair got too long to wash by myself).

I do 20%, more for really good (i.e. fast, friendly, & genuine) service. At bars I usually give the bartender a buck or so per drink, 'cos I like strong drinks. Always toss the carwash guys a couple bucks, mainly 'cos I'm picky about having little nooks & crannies i.e. around the license plate done.

and, um... I don't generally feel called on to express opinions like this but the "they shouldn't take the job" comment was just plain shitty. People don't become waitstaff in greasy spoons or "family restaurants" because they have a whole range of job skills or options, and greasy-spoon waiting was the one they felt was their life calling. That's like saying migrant workers shouldn't take farm jobs if they don't like being constantly exposed to toxic chemicals.

I dont think Im being harsh no, for a couple reasons.

1. Most waiters/waitresses suck at there job.

2. I usually eat out with other people who tip well

3. There are plenty of people who over tip, which covers me.

4. As I said, people in the service know the risk.

and 5. If the service is excellent, I mean great, never having to ask for anything, always getting refills on drinks ect, then I will contribute to the tip.

I know alot of people think its not cool, but oh well. Im in a job where you should get tips some times, but I never get any, neither dso my co-workers, but we dont bitch.

Also, I would tip you brenda, just becuase your cool and one of the only people that responds to my posts :p

^Karma?

A waitress only makes roughly $2.00 to $3.00 per hour in pay check form and that usually goes to taxes because allot of places even bars use computer ordering/dinning and they do tax the waitress based on a percentage of her total sales so weather or not you tip she gets taxed on your bill.

Those who don’t tip are viewed extremely RUDE by many with in the service industry and many of those same service people are college students who may go on to be your "dentist", would you really want your dentist to remember you stiffed them on a tip a few years back, cause trust me WE REMBER who does not tip.

i would rather tip then have the person serving me get pissed and CHOP my hair or spit in my food.

Also, people who don’t tip should know that it is always a gamble, if they aren’t willing to take that chance, they SHOULD tip in the first place. THats why i allways tip.

If they end up a dentist, they are making plenty of money and shouldnt complain, and if the dentist fucks up my teeth...hes a dentist and will probably kill himself anyways, fair trade. And dont say waitresses dont make good money, yes, only 2 or 3 and hour, but MOST people do tip.My friend makes 100 a night at max and ermas from tips, I think she can afford not getting tipped by a couple people.

So you're not fucking the waitstaff; you're fucking your friends.

There's a difference between "should get tips some times" and "wage is calculated based on the assumption that you WILL get tips."

It's bullshit that servers are paid LOWER THAN MINIMUM WAGE with the expectation that people like you will tip according to our societal norm. But that's the way it is right now, and I'll continue to fairly tip until they rework the minimum wage laws.

lol i take it you a waitress? and when I do eat by my self, i dont tip either, so im not hiding behind my friends or anything like that. And its not bullshit that they get paid lower than minumum wage. They obviusly DO get tips from the majority of society, as I said, I have friends that makes hundreds a week off of tips. And its not my fault the people assume that everyone tips, and not everyone does just ignorant people. Restraunts say "sometimes you have great nights, soem times you dont."

you need to calm down.

No, I'm not a waitress. And why don't they deserve a minimum wage?

I'm a very good tipper.

Esp. when its my friends.

I have a friend that works at Hooters, and she normally hooks me and my friends up with drinks. But I will pretty much give her a tip that would cover the beers we got for free, and just about half of the bill.

I know where the money goes. She's a college student. So it goes to beer and stuff. :laughing
