Hellion Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 :devil The way radio has gone,is they always play the same songs everyday in different orders. There definately needs to be variety.I personally know a few DJ's at WRIF and they told me that its the radio stations owner thats at fault. They said if they had their way they would play what people want to hear, and what they themselves would rather hear. I do not see anytime soon,a Goth industrial station or a metal station comming anytime soon, but of course there is satelite radio.Regular Detroit TV is basically nothing but infomercials, and news, but then again I don't watch much TV or even cable. Shit I remember when they had several rock stations in Detroit.thanx to the CD player I can still listen to what I want whenever I want. Share your opinions:
phee Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 Not enough goths, rivitheads, and metalheads, to warrent a good station... Because all stations are paid for by advertizors, we are not a high consumption group us... so the music will continue to be determined by yuppies that buy stuff from the ads... I LIKE NPR....

So there may be enough "goths" to justify a radio station, you can barely find 2 "goths" to agree on what is even goth. A Goth station would play Type O Negative, VNV Nation, Bauhaus and Depeche Mode. However everytime one of those songs would be played, fans of the other bands would tune out. So, 89X should host a 2 hour Industrial show, a 1 hour synthpop show, etc

Msterbeau Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 I hate radio... Except for news on NPR. I should listen to Dimensions more... I hear there's interesting stuff on that program. If there was a decent way to get broadband internet access to your car (And by decent I mean cheap, with excellent reception) the internet radio stations that abound would cover our needs much better then the mass market crap that currently exists. Now that I think about it... Some communities (Oakland County for one) are working on blanket WiFi internet coverage. Now all you need is an inexpensive way to have it in your car...
Fierce Critter Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 During our current budget crunch, we've had to let our Sirius lapse. And we are lamenting it mightily. People, if you can afford it, get satellite. I don't care if you go Sirius or XM. They're both great. Initial cost is not bad. You can get a receiver that can go between car & home for about $80 at Wal-Mart. I'm talking Sirius here, we have one that basically broadcasts over a dead FM station, eliminating the need for a separate docking station. We also have a receiver in our car, but the Sirius-ready stereo we had was stolen at CC one night. Initial start-up was something like $25, and monthly bill about $13.00. It. Is. Worth. It. Not to get into a big advertising campaign - just go to their websites to see what kind of stations and programs they have. But for us goths and the like, Sirius' New Wave station has a 2-4 hour block of Darkwave on Sunday Nights. VERY cool. With any luck, it could be expanded to it's own station someday. Satellite is THE way to go.

Satellite is THE way to go. Unless you have a 30-60GB IPod. In which case you rip all your CD's (And anything else you can download/borrow from friends) into Itunes and then create some cool playlists... and all of a sudden you have more music at the touch of your fingers then you will ever know what to do with. I've got 12 GB on mine already and it seem like an awful lot. What radio is good for is hearing stuff you never did before. Again... you can always trade/borrow from friends.

The amount of new stuff you hear on Sirius is astounding. Stuff we never would have been exposed to without it. And the OLD stuff on stations like the new wave one, the 80's ones and stuff like that - it's great. Stuff they just don't play on the radio anymore, and we still want to hear. The Fixx, Hayzee Fantayzee, Bauhaus, The Buggles, The Call, etc. Damn. Now I want my Sirius back. =(
JaneDead Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 So, 89X should host a 2 hour Industrial show, a 1 hour synthpop show, etc <{POST_SNAPBACK}> yeah really no kidding they really should. i have given up on radio all together. i only listen to my ipod or sirius radio. station 22 is my absolute favorite on there (called first wave, critter mentioned it too ^) after hearing that station i had no reason to listen to regular radio again
AstralCrux Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 106.7 (country) has the right idea just mixing lots of old and new music together in their playlists, but they're actually taking suggestions by the public seriously. In fact they're letting listeners design the station's on air operations. I've been stuck on the station since I found out it came out.

Homicidalheathen Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 I have not listened to mainstream radio in like 12-16 yrs. It all sounds like crap to me. Every once in awhile I turn it on to see if anything has changed or gotten better......and well, no. I only listen to cable techno channel or my own cds or online stations mentioned in this website. I think that 12-16 years is a long time and says something about the way mainstream music is in this country. I know I am older, but......damn........all this shit has been done already!!!! Everyone is copying the 60's and 70's sounds.
Homicidalheathen Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Been thinking about this for awhile......thanks. I just might go do this! DJ Nocker Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Its kinda pricy, but SYRIUS radio has those kind of stations, i know becuase I listen to them at my work all the time. The metal station kicks ass! The industrial one is ok, sometimes they through some trance in with it though, But yea, check out SYRIUS, its good stuff.

I'd rather eat my own vomit than hear the same 5 Aerosmtih/Zepplin songs over and over again. It would be a blessing if people under the age of 40 actually compiled the playlists instead of these quickly aging post baby boomers that still think it's still 1973. :doh
Head Wreck Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 just got rid of my old pioneer head unit (nice 50W per cannel mosfet one with animated pictures, though i only tended to use the DB level L&R one) for another that accepts cd's with mp3 and wma in adition to the 6 disk changer. with just the changer i spent most of my time skipping tracks, with a HDD full of MP3's i just tended to listen to the most recently ripped (i don t download any more. its not worth the viruses or badly named/abruptly cut off rips). the new system is just too much. and i only get what i hace a CD for anyhow. i dont hear new stuff, or bands i've never heared of before. i miss total rock radio on DAB, it clossed down, and now theres only kerrang magazines one (kerrang, once a good magazine got bought out by smash hits and went teeny-bopper for the alternative emo crowd and nu-metalers). as to wifi radio... http://www.101fc.net/ the guy who owns the site converted an old land rover 101 ambulance to a camper. one of the tweeks was integrating a linux PC into it to serve GPS, wifi hotspot access, email, and to act as the landies car stereo. might be worth a looksee
