DeadBurgerKing (10) Posted June 27, 2006 Posted June 27, 2006 I don't know many goth, industrial or synthpop bands...I wanna hear more...so I was wondering if I can get some suggestions for bands of these three genres and some songs I need to hear to open myself up to these bands... (For the record I'm more of a punk rock guy...so I don't know many goth, industrial or synthpop bands...but what I have heard I like...)
phee Posted June 27, 2006 Posted June 27, 2006 Phee's Industrial Pantheon: (I won't go into the other subgenres, as others are more enthused) Frontline Assembly - RECOMENDED ALBUMS: Tactical Neural Implant, Hardwired, Millenium, Artificial Soldier.... Perhaps the best, and most complex programming in the genre, chord changes, multiple layers of sound and melodies, and amazing sound design... hard edged when compared to normal club fair, some use of guitars on some tracks... some people are overwhelmed by the layering and soundscape and cannot get into it due to lack of simplicity (IE: not usual IBM club fair) Skinny Puppy - RECOMENDED ALBUMS: Too Dark Park, The Process, Vivisect VI, The Greater Wrong of the Right... Creativity and originality are the main forces in this group, one of the "darkest" sounding groups in the business, avant gaurd sound design, lyrics, and mood... creepy, erie, aggressive, and bizzare... Another group not for the "Top 40" industrial club goer... not the usual four on the floor beats, never heard a band like them ever. Front 242 - RECOMMENDED ALBUMS: Front by Front, Pulse, Tyranny for You, Fuck Up Evil, Evil Off... Rythemn and power behind this band... powerful vocals and beats.... inventors of the expression EBM, although current EBM is very different from it's current form.. more vocal and movement focused then some... you still hear the track "Headhunter" in clubs. Haujobb - RECOMMENDED ALBUMS: Vertical Theory, Frames, Homes and Gardens... From Germany, very complex programming and amazing production, later works much more dance floor oriented, with earlier works more in the bizarre and creepy format. Very futuristic and sci fi focused in subject matter... still a bit layered for some club goers however. Anyway... that is a beginning of the music I love.. take it or leave it, and I hope you like it.
phee Posted June 27, 2006 Posted June 27, 2006 I almost forgot... Haujobbs best album is "Solutions for a small planet"
Blackmail Posted June 27, 2006 Posted June 27, 2006 A good thing to do is check out http://www.myspace.com/metropolisrecords and go thru the list of bands on the left, many have myspace pages and you can listen to a bunch of their songs. There is alot of futurepop, synthpop, goth and industrial on that label. Like 60% of the stuff they play at City Club is on that label. Also, do you like harder stuff or more melodic stuff? You can also check out http://www.myspace.com/adifferentdrum which is strictly synthpop and http://www.myspace.com/plastiqmusiq which is another synthpop label but the bands on that label are all old-school style using only analog synths....so alot of stuff that sounds like early Soft Cell or Yazoo. I consider myself an expert on synthpop so ask me anything!
Pulse State Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 I would also try to get a hold of some of the Infacted Recordings compilations (Infacted vols 1 through 3, Infact1on One, &c). Though that label is based in Germany, and has licensed a lot of its acts to domestic labels, the compilations are very adept at exposing good music to people.
phee Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 I don't know of too many good electro bands that are from the U.S. these days....
Scary Guy Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 Don't listen to any of them, start off with things you will like. My recommended list is more geared towards goth/punk. 45 Grave, The Misfits, Siouxsie and the Banshees/The Creatures, The Sisters of Mercy/The Sisterhood, The Mission U.K., The Mission, Fields of the Nephilim, Gary Numan, The Graveyard Bats, Shock Therapy, Joy Division, Killing Joke, The Mephisto Waltz, Nina Hagen, Rosetta Stone, Sex Gang Children, Bauhaus, Type O Negative (a must if you don't know it already), The Damned, Dead Can Dance, Current 93, The Cure, The Cult, Concrete Blonde, (Clan of) Xymox, Christian Death, The Bronx Casket Co., Bella Morte, The Astro Vamps, Alien Sex Fiend, and personally I think Alice Cooper counts too.

Scary Guy Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 Well not at first anyhow. I just think he should start out with things more geared towards his tastes then expand out. Yeah I probably could have worded it different but I'm naturally an asshole, sorry.

Type O negative? :whistling

DarkVampire Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 Scary Guy mentioned a lot of good ones. Chiasm happens to be one of my favorites in the electro genre.
Joey Deadcat Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 Type O negative? :whistling <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Exactly. While I like Type O Negative's early material they're not goth(though, Peter Steele was greatly influenced by several gothy and dark bands).
phee Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 Exactly. While I like Type O Negative's early material they're not goth(though, Peter Steele was greatly influenced by several gothy and dark bands). Yeah and the request was for synth industrial.... so um.... wha?
Joey Deadcat Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 Surprised Scary Guy didn't mention Ghoultown. But anyway, a band worth looking into for sure. Also: Cinema Strange, Cult Of The Psychic Fetus, Frankenstein, Bone Orchard, Deja Voodoo, Projekt's Dark Cabaret comp, Gorilla(Hungarian psychobilly band; they have a dark sound you might dig), Screaming Lord Sutch, Dave Vanian's Phantom Chords, Koffin Kats, Danielle Dax, 3-D Invisibles, The Brides, Brickbats,Zombina & The Skeletones, Miguel & The Living Dead, Cryptkeeper Five,Mister Monster, Balzac,Nim Vind, HorrorPops,13th Chime, Penis Flytrap, Demented Are Go, Nekromantix, Diamanda Galas,1919, The Vanishing, Gloria Mundi (possibly the original goth band), Voltaire, Death In June, Current 93, Sixth Comm, Sol Evictus, Tav Falco & His Panther Burns(not exactly goth but you might still dig their sound), Devil Doll(cool loungey stuff that can be kinda dark at times), Bloody Dead & Sexy, The Naked And The Dead, Demented Scumcats, The Meteors, and Detroit's legendary Gargoyle Sox to name a few. Though, you might already have some of the above.
