Anyone a fan of 4AD?

For those that don't know, 4AD is/was a record label out of England. Recently they've switched their emphasis so I am not a big fan but their 80's staple of bands were great in my opinion.

Bands:

Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Lisa Gerrard, This Mortal Coil, Wolfgang Press, Clan of Xymox, The Birthday Party, Xmal Deutschland and even Bauhaus put out some stuff thru 4ad.

Others that came along in the late 80's/early 90's:

The Pixies, The Breeders, Throwing Muses, Gus Gus, Mojave 3, Lush.

They put out a seminal compilation entitled "Lonely is an Eyesore" in the mid 80's which featured excellent stuff from several of the bands listed above.

I think anyone interested in dark, romantic music (be it goth or darkwave) should get into alot of those bands.

Anyone else into 4AD?

I was very into these bands about 10 years ago... (first marrage,) and I think that almost all of them are phenomenal....

In fact.... when I get home... I am going to go pull out some Cocteau Twins....

I am suprised more people on DGN aren't into Clan of Xymox, well, some were on the old DGN. They play them at CC pretty much every week. Sometimes they were just copying Sisters of Mercy but other times they were pretty creative.

I think Wolfgang Press were criminally underated.

How about Factory Records?

Joy Division, New Order, James, The Happy Mondays, Cabaret Voltaire, OMD (first single only), Durutti Column.

Perhaps not as "goth" but certainly important to the era.

I have some Xymox as well....

And Factory? Cabaret Voltaire had a lot to do with Haujobbs early sound...

4AD had some really great artists on there. As well as most of the above mentioned they also had Richenel and Colourbox. To this day still love Colourbox!

YES!

4ad has basically produced about half of my favorite bands/groups ever, including the cocteau twins, dead can dance (including the side projects of brendan perry, peter ulrich, and sometimes lisa gerrard), the pixies, and the red house painters.

I have a deep need to further explore their catalog, but it's something on a list of many.

I dig xymox, and clan of xymx, but am very cut and dry about them. I love what I love, and feel very on the edge of mediocrity about the rest.

opium and poison is a personal favorite that comes to mind.

Jasmine and Rose is the name of that song, I think.

I am not big on anything he/they did recently, aside from a few songs. I really like their stuff from 85-87 and a few of their club songs in the 90's.

Actually, 'Farewell' is a pretty good album all the way around and that was a 2000's album.

I don't like the Red House Painters, but that's just me. Reminds me of emo :grin

You are so right, and I am so not allowed to post at three a.m. anymore when I'm already half asleep and don't even know why the laptop is near me, much less on.

On that note though, creatures is my favorite xymox album.

moving on though...
