Censorship

As far as language goes, that's bullshit...  or poppycock I should say.  http://www.sho.com/site/ptbs/prevepisodes....id=s2/profanity  Really good series there.

As far as flashing old people goes, or flashing anyone for that matter, that's fine too.  Hell that Futurama where Prof. Farnsworth goes nude (I'm pretty sure that happens in more than one episode too) didn't even phaze me.

Most of what is offensive is just because it's that shocking.  If nothing is sensored, and everything is seen, then eventually nothing will offend anyone anymore and we can get past all this nonsence.

Seriously, was driving down the street one day and there was this fat (I mean morbidly obease) woman in spandex walking on the sidewalk.  Now THAT was offensive and there probably should be some type of law against that.  But hey you see it enough and get used to it, then who cares?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I'M morbidly obese, at least according to the calculations that don't take muscle mass into account.

And yeah, I can't pull off spandex. =) But why the gender bias in regards to fat people? Not just you, Scary... in general, fat men are more accepted in society and the media than fat women....

you should because that is true.

lol, true statements aren't all you need for a good thread. I'm reminded of what a great movie Sling Blade is.

How's this for gender bias, NO MAN SHOULD EVER WEAR SPANDEX (unless it's the 80's and you're in a hair metal band, then I'll let it go, as long as it's a band that doesn't suck).

As far as the women I'm talking about went, she made you look anerexic.

I don't see a need to censor for adults because I'm in agreement with SG about eventually getting past the issues. I break stereotypes, alot actually, like that goth/punk/whatever kids are scary/evil/antisocial. I chat up little old ladies in supermarkets about all kinds of things, sometimes just for kicks. I love it when I can get people who've never met me to tell me "never change" because I know it has made them think. We need to see more fat naked people to get us past our belief that only skinny people are beautiful. I'm no size 5, but I pull off cute pretty damn well.

I'm extremly picky about how to censor for kids, but I also follow the belief that kids shouldn't be exposed to any of the big issues until they hit teen years. Even then, gradually. But, it also depends on how bright the individual child is and how much they can handle. Going into the whole child-censorship plan would get boring. I've thought too long on it.

IN the same sense, could not propoganda be considered the same thing in a way? First, we are not told everything about the war......second, if you shoot antiwar movies your shunned......so....the media is in this country it seems, afraid to go against the governments propoganda for the most part. They seem like a bunch of ass kissers to me.

Take what happened to the Dixie chicks. Or Sinade O connor. They stand up for what they believe in, and it almost kills their carreers.

Care to give examples of what you mean?

Something that bugs the shit out of me is when people tell protesters of the war to shut up and support the troops.  This sort of messege is subtly and not so subtly endorsed by the current administration.  It's not outright censorship but it can have a similar effect for some people depending on where you live and who your neighbors are.

Muy interesante, pero no abouto censorshipo.

Would you speak French already???

The first sentence in the Wiki entry about censorship says: "Censorship is the control of speech and other forms of human expression."

How is removing documents from public view not censorship? OK... maybe it's not directly limiting speech but it limiting information that was formerly available for some extended period of time. They may as well be burning books.... which is certainly censorship.

right]

'Fat' people are beautiful, there are quite a few who people who appreciate them as well. The problem is, the majority of society puts such a value on 'skinny' people as the prettier/sexier/more beautiful of the two, that nobody wants to admit their preference for the larger percentage of the population.

There are a bunch of people who just aren't as attracted to people-of-size, regardless of cultural pressure. It's just a matter of personal taste with some people.

*startling incidental music*

And I'M ONE OF THEM!!!!

Der der DAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!

/incidental

I don't like really big guys, or really skinny guys, or really tall guys who are stocky... but if I ever want to go out on dates with guys who aren't complete fruit loops, I have to look past physical appearance. And sometimes it pays off, of course. You can fall hard for someone you wouldn't look twice at, and they gradually become more beautiful than anyone else.

I went to the dictionary sources. All they gave me was nouns and I wanted a verb dammit! (The one I went to listed no verbs for "censor".. odd) So I moved on to my next favorite source....

I think in this case "damning" can be interchanged with "objectionable" if we bear in mind the people responsible for removing it.

Otherwise.. we can agree t o disagree.

I found "censor" listed as a transitive verb... It's possible that it's a more recent addition. Maybe it's one of those words that isn't officially a verb, like "access," which is supposed to be only a noun. It got co-opted, though.

And no, I feel the spirit of censorship is different from the spirit of obfuscation. They were covering their own asses... so yeah, agree to disagree.

What I find curious is that the cat is out of the bag on that stuff. I guess they're hoping no one found the damnable bits that they reclassified....
