Dubh Aingeal Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 A new bacteria killing virus has been deemed safe by the FDA as a food additive for ready-to-eat meats. These bacteriophages are designed to kill a common microbe (Listeria monocytogenes bacteria) to which hundreds of deaths every year have been attributed. From the article: "The viruses are grown in a preparation of the very bacteria they kill, and then purified. The FDA had concerns that the virus preparation potentially could contain toxic residues associated with the bacteria. However, testing did not reveal the presence of such residues, which in small quantities likely wouldn't cause health problems anyway, the FDA said."
Head Wreck Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 phage viruses? these were developed in russia but kind of got burried with the soviets fall
Onyx Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 This makes me very uneasy. *gets assault weapon for zombies this may create*
Dubh Aingeal Posted August 20, 2006 Author Posted August 20, 2006 And its not like you can choose to eat the meats with out the virus added in unless you just stop getting meat in prepackaged form. I see deli meat orders increasing. Consumers won't be aware that meat and poultry products have been treated with the spray, Zajac added. The Department of Agriculture will regulate the actual use of the product.
Homicidalheathen Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 I second that. :erm :fear This makes me very uneasy. *gets assault weapon for zombies this may create* <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Msterbeau Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 Ummmm... isn't it actually kinda healthy to have a little bacteria around so our immune systems develope ways to fight them? Bearing in mind that this fights a specific DEADLY bacteria....
Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 Depends on the Bacteria. Some are good and some are bad. Viruses on the other hand are scary. They tend to mutate and create new viruses that do new and wonderful things. Like making your flesh melt off your body like ice in the sun.
BrassFusion Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 aw sheeeeeet, dawg, just noticed that it's a bacteria-killing virus and not a bacteria-killing bacteria. Yeah, kinda surprised they're using a virus for that, considering how little we really know about them.
