Fierce Critter Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 Is it faked? Well, Cosgrove did go silent as that happened. So I don't know how you can really label it as "faked". Yes, the audio has serious impact. But I've seen footage of those buildings being hit and collapsing over and over and over and over and over again. With this particular edit, for the first time, it "clicked" that at that moment, people's hope - and LIVES - were completely and totally obliterated. It's been so hard to conceive of the loss because there were no BODIES to see. The sound/visual here brought it home.
Onyx Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 I dunno, I think the editor just made it that way so that the viewer more easily identified with Kevin Cosgrove. It worked. Yes. My first reaction was similar to BrassFusion's, that it was a cheap attention-getting gimmick. It did make me realize that it could have been *me* on the phone, facing death trapped in a burning building. Life can end at any time. Theirs didn't have to. War and terrorism are just so ultimately wasteful and stupid.
BrassFusion Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 How is it different than dying in a car accident? Or from AIDS? Or drowning in your bedroom in New Orleans? Or from starvation or disease, if you live in a third-world country? Is it better or worse?
kellygrrrrrl Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 http://ebaumsworld.com/2006/07/kevin-cosgrove-911-call.html My work PC blocks anything from Ebaums world unfortunately (I cannot see it), is it available on YouTube?? What is the title of this clip? Perhaps I can find it?

It's neither better nor worse. It's all horrible.

Perhaps I can find it? Kelly - it's available in several places on YouTube. Go to YouTube and search Kevin Cosgrove. Several sources will come up. It's painful. Be warned.

I guess my point is that a lot of preventable tragic death happens and the people in a position to prevent it choose not to.
Fierce Critter Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 I guess my point is that a lot of preventable tragic death happens and the people in a position to prevent it choose not to. Hm. Well, this is sort of - well, flat-out - derailing. But I lean socialist. Which I'm fully aware is nice in concept, but fails in execution. I don't think everything is preventable. Because it would require too many people - well, all people - to have the same brother helping brother mindset. And that, I doubt, will ever come to be. And, thus, we will have the kinds of tragedies you describe, as well as "lesser" and worse ones.
Troy Spiral (13) Posted August 31, 2006 Posted August 31, 2006 I dont like the idea that the media profits from picking and choosing which "horrors" to report and which to ignore, but anything that gets people thinking about real life and compassion for other human beings is overall a good thing. We live in a fairly padded , insulated culture (and becoming more so) rare when something jars us out of our american idol , tv dinner, self-indulgent, narssistic , mind-fog entertianment comas. Are there OTHER things that happen that are horrible every day that we ignore or just never hear about? Sure. Should we care about them more than any other preventable deaths that just didnt happen to have a camera on? Probably not. But any time we are forced to deal with reality outside of our personal bubbles , i think its a good thing. Too many would rather hide. (including my indfferent self at times)
