"NHSTA Could Mandate Stability Control

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) could propose, as soon as this week, that every passenger vehicle sold in this country be outfitted with stability control. USA Today reports that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a separate research group, estimates 10,000 lives could be saved each year if the systems were made standard equipment. The new NHTSA rules would likely take three years or more to implement. The paper adds automakers aren't likely to balk at the rule but may ask for more time to implement the feature, which is interdependent with anti-lock braking. More than 80 percent of all vehicles now offer anti-lock brakes as standard."

This might be OK for some people since our driver's training is a joke but there better be a goddamn switch to turn it off. I don't want or need a babysitter in the car.

Oh there might not be a switch to turn it off but rest assured there are ways to turn it off.

So, help me out here. What IS this thing? What does a devide for "stability control" do?

Stability control utilizes a variety of sensors (Steering angle, throttle position, yaw sensor, etc) to control the brakes (Which already have computer controled ABS) and prevent your car from skidding out of control. By braking individual wheels based on those sensor inputs you can achieve this. It's not fool-proff as there will always be some situation that's just too severe, nor will it prevent you from hitting someone since it can't "see".

That's probably not true. Generally things like that fail-safe off. It would just shut down the system and turn on a warning light.

Yep. The Malibu I had before the Mazda ... something went wrong with the ABS. I know nothing about ABS ...

It shut the ABS system off and turned on the ABS light ... ABS never worked again. I could have gotten it fixed ... but it was old.

That car sucked in the snow ...

The minivan I bought in 2002 came equipped with Traction Control. I loved that in the snow! I never slid or anything, scared the snot out of me the first few times it kicked in though.

Maybe that's why I thought the Malibu sucked in the snow, because I was spoiled by GM Traction Control ...

Just remember that traction control only helps the drive wheels, not the car as a whole.

Some people think these features do way more then they actually are capable of... and then they wonder why they crashed?

this technology is precisely why the newest car i own is a '91, and even that had computer bullshit on it... :erm

I don't mind electronic fuel injection. Driveabilty compltetely kicks ass on carburators... and ABS can be a godsend in the wet. Other then that.. fuck it.
