mallochai Posted September 14, 2006 Posted September 14, 2006 This is double posted from Livejournal... so those of you who read me there, nothing new to see here. So... I might be moving to california. That's less far away from Michigan than Alaska, and more likely to fall off the face of the earth, or at least off the edge of the u.s. of a. I'm not sure how I feel about this. Good. But also bad. California... it's like the ultimate of foreign places to me. Strange outlook, I know. My visions of california are ugly, dirty, plastic, palm trees, glamour, and too much sunshine, too expensive. Then again, it's also opportunity, finally finishing school, important decisions. On a side note, I can't finish school here now because my mentor teacher fell in a nine foot hole, and I need someone to guide me. I need two years of one person. The replacement will not be enough. Things are jumbled as they are. Better to start over, again, and just GO. Scott has decided that he doesn't want to do the msw program after all. I support his decision to take the time, now time, to write, to get a part time job or a teaching job or something, and just try to get published. Really, what else is a writer to do? He can't go on being a student forever. And neither can I. California could be a lot of things. It could be a job with a gallery, or an art supply manufacturing company (i have connections now, strangely enough). It will be finalization first. It will be a place to get published. We want to end up in San Fancisco, but that's pretty unrealistic right now. Probably Long Beach, where our friend Greg lives. We haven't decided whether to leave next month, or in december. It would be better to move SOONER rather than later, because the drive would be hell during snow. The drive will already be hell. Days and days of driving. But we have so much STUFF, and just getting rid of it all would be a humungus waste. Plus, it'd be too hard to take Ichabod on a plane. He'd be a very unhappy camper. Besides.. I've hardly seen any of the west coast. It'd be a learning experience. This whole thing makes me really nervous, almost nauseous nervous. But it's also exciting, in a way. I'm not really a "get up and go there now" type of person. Too risky. But I'll never get anwhere if I don't just do it already. Hrmmmm..... There has been a lot of talking about this. There will be much more. This is not a rash decision, but perhaps badly timed.
Brenda Starrr Posted September 14, 2006 Posted September 14, 2006 This actually sounds like an awesome opprotunity. And yes, You'll be closer to MI. At least it's the continental U.S.A.! Feel good about it. From what I hear, Cali is beautiful. I'd live there if given the chance. Yeah, there are earthquakes and such, but so what! I'd look upon ALL of it as an adventure. Life is short, girl. Go do it!
torn asunder Posted September 14, 2006 Posted September 14, 2006 actually, alaska is part of the "continental" usa, just not part of the "contiguous" states...
Brenda Starrr Posted September 14, 2006 Posted September 14, 2006 actually, alaska is part of the "continental" usa, just not part of the "contiguous" states... That's what I meant. For some reason, I have the word "continental" on the brain.
mallochai Posted September 14, 2006 Author Posted September 14, 2006 According to the us postal system, it's not considered a part of the continental. Which is why I can't get clothing any other way but UPS overnight up here from half the places I order from. Greedy bastards.... Fifity dollars in shipping for something I want to pay twenty bucks for... ----------- Thanks for the positive reinforcement, brenda.
Brenda Starrr Posted September 14, 2006 Posted September 14, 2006 HA! So I was right!!!!! :peanutbutterjellytime And, you're welcome!
Msterbeau Posted September 14, 2006 Posted September 14, 2006 Welcome closer... And California sucks in many ways. The "fakeness" of it all is quite pervasive. On the other hand... blasting through the canyon roads or out in the desert on motorcycle or car is awesome. Kick the people out and it might be alright.
mallochai Posted September 17, 2006 Author Posted September 17, 2006 through much discussion, this could even end up taking us to Portland, which I would prefer by far. I LOVE portland. *gets a little more excited*
Fierce Critter Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 Best of luck to you. Our last move from NC back to Michigan was harrowing, but so rewarding in the end. I agree that getting rid of everything can seem really like a waste. Gads, when I had to pack up the NC house myself, I had to give away anything that wouldn't fit in a box - and then some. Even had to leave the brand new 27" tv, and I had to really give it all away. No time to have a garage sale. I was real popular on Freecycle before I left. Grr. Anyhow, it's been heartbreaking going to reach for something and then remembering, "oh yeah. Left that in NC." Then again, it's been fun replacing a lot of stuff with new stuff. Well, "used" stuff actually, all from curbside or yard sales.
mallochai Posted September 18, 2006 Author Posted September 18, 2006 Blech, I am NOT looking forward to packing. I just got done unpacking! No, wait, I'm not even done yet! The most dreaded parts are going to be the giant fucking stupid tv that scott bought, and all the framed prints. I might be able to get away with just taking the glass out of those, but we'll see. I know I'm definately going to have to take all the paintings off of their stretcher bars. Some art student is going to be very happy. But the three bookshelves full of books... those are definately coming with us. Oh god... so much stuff! And a spastic dog to boot! Well, at least we didn't end up buying the bed like we thought we would. We just have a mattress. Heh, I don't even have a garage to have a garage sale out of, and it's a bit out of season at this point anyway. Good thing we have lots of friends who need stuff, or will at least be willing to take stuff.
Troy Spiral (13) Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 You need to move to Westland, Michigan.
mallochai Posted October 25, 2006 Author Posted October 25, 2006 Heh, well, now I'm actually moving to Beaverton, Oregon, so nyeh! Oh god... one more week and I'll be driving through the snowy Yukon. Scary.
