Homicidalheathen Posted September 16, 2006 Posted September 16, 2006 Scary guy I am joining your church now. Personally I think all these people who did so much for our world, were able to do so by thinking outside the box in the first place.
BrassFusion Posted September 16, 2006 Posted September 16, 2006 HOT. I didn't know all those people were atheists. Kick ass. Just... awesome... one fact from it that I feel might have been misrepresented, though, is the divorce rate. i'm not surprised there's a correlation, but it seems likely that agnostics/atheists would tend to marry later and after having other relationships, while many christians would tend to marry the first person they fall in love with. that would definitely affect the divorce rate. so i wouldn't personally blame theism for that.
Troy Spiral (13) Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 David Mills (Author of many books on various topics including atheism) links to that video on his homepage. Thought it was interesting. He lists like 50 different athiests of them with various quotes and such. Probably would have been a bit more effective if it had less academic references who only us nerds would recognize.
Msterbeau Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 I could produce a list of Unitarians that could rival this guys list. Of course, there'd probably be a fair bit of overlap. :-)
Troy Spiral (13) Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 Unitarians? The two different things that conjures up in my mind (Unitarian Universalists) and oldschool Unitarian Christians (dont believe in the trinity) ... neither group are "atheists". Not sure what your referencing Mr B.
Msterbeau Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 Unitarians? The two different things that conjures up in my mind (Unitarian Universalists) and oldschool Unitarian Christians (dont believe in the trinity) ... neither group are "atheists". Not sure what your referencing Mr B. You haven't been to a UU church lately have you? They are actually related. Early Unitarians were indeed Christians who believe in a single entity instead of the Trinity. Early Universalists were also generally Christian/Puritains who's main digression from other demoninations was the idea of universal salvation. These two groups joined to form the Unitarian Universalist (UU) Association in the 50's. If you look at a list of famous UU's/Unitarians/Universalists, I'm sure you'd find a number of atheists amongst them. Except for some of the very old congregations in New England, UU's haven't been primarily Christian for many, many years. Even those that are welcome people of any belief. (Or lack thoereof)
Scary Guy Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 I've been this way since I was 12 I love being smart
phee Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 Go team! (I noticed that agnostics were included)
BrassFusion Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 According to the proper definition of "atheism," agnosticism is a subset of atheism.
Scary Guy Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 Once again though it's all belief based, so no one knows anything for sure, and everyone is agnostic... technically speaking.
BrassFusion Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 Once again though it's all belief based, so no one knows anything for sure, and everyone is agnostic... technically speaking. Easy words from someone who has no understanding of what faith is. And try not to take offense at that... you know I'm the same way.
Scary Guy Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 Easy words from someone who has no understanding of what faith is. And try not to take offense at that... you know I'm the same way. Trust me, we both have a good understanding of faith. Just becuase you lack it doesn't mean you don't understand it. Besides I'm sure you had it at one point as well. Santa, the easter bunny, the tooth fairy, etc... I'm sure you had faith in them at one point as well (unless your parents weren't as stupid as mine and decided not to lie to you to begin with).

I'm sure you had faith in them at one point as well (unless your parents weren't as stupid as mine and decided not to lie to you to begin with). Out of all those, I only believed in Santa because my parents had "photographic evidence," lol. I knew the guy in the mall was a phony, but I BELIEVED MY PARENTS. So I had faith in THEM. My parents. Not Santa. And that was nothing like adult religious faith because in accordance with every physical law I think I know, my parents have always existed. I can see them and touch them (ew) and smell them (ew), and I know they've always loved me, so I've always trusted them. I can't see, touch, hear, or communicate with a god, but I understand that other people who can't believe in a god regardless. Some of them choose to, some of them can't make a choice. They simply believe. I can't fathom that; I have no practical understanding of adult religious faith. Maybe if my parents had been as adamant about the existence of God as the existence of Santa (they had me fooled for years), I would believe in him, instead. I'm rather glad they weren't, and I don't.
HipsterDufus Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 I particularly liked the statistic about how few atheists are in jail. That's pretty staggering.
Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 People tend to find God when in Prison.
HipsterDufus Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 People tend to find God when in Prison. I've always wondered why that is. Seems like you'd be more pissed off with "the powers that be" because you got caught, but I've never been in that situation (luckily).

It's not like god put them in jail. and the whole basis of the christian faith is that if they find god, their sins will be wiped clean. gosh, I wonder how christianity got so popular...
Scary Guy Posted September 19, 2006 Posted September 19, 2006 Well there are certain similarities between ones parents and the christian version of god. I used to believe my parents were always right, always did good, and would always be there for me. They were the rulers of my little world and imagine my shock when I found out they were only human as well. So yeah my faith in them is still strong, but not as much as it once was. They never mentioned god and the only times they did it was due to the influince of other family members.
