Before I Infiltrated The Goth Subculture

Shocking confessions: we all like them. Here is a thread where we can let the entire scene know just what's ripping us apart from the inside out. I will go first.

In 1983, I had every Duran, Duran album to date and sometimes people call them a new romo band. Plus, I never started dressing like a pirate when Vivienne Westwood actually made that a cool thing to do. Shortly after this brief albeit destructive phase, I went through another lapse in reasoning where I listened to Dead Kennedys with an intense and unapologetic effort which some outside the goth world might compare to actual vigor.

For shame!! We'll have no vigor here!!! That might mean you actually. *GASP*... care!!!

I liked Devo then. I like Devo now. Get over it.

...I was New Wave, with Cyndi-Lauper-wanna-be outfits, hair & makeup, and I sang music by groups like The Go'Go's and Kim Wilde and Joan Jett in an all-girl group.

My biggest shame being that the exchange student from England played me a tape of what he claimed was his band playing, and me saying I liked it, especially that "F I R E in C A I R O" song...

...and years later, hearing The Cure's "Three Imaginary Boys" album for the first time, and realizing I'd been totally had.

And in ensuing years, I have collected every album by Journey and Cheap Trick, and would have MUCH MORE Dean Martin with me on a desert island than I would anything goth.

Boo-ya.

Of course, goth really wasn't called goth until it was already too late and chalk full of bands I've never liked and never will. So in a way, I've committed no error. Except for the Duran Duran part. But I was only six years old.

Posted

My great shame... I saw Ted Nugent in concert.. three times.

Why are y'all ashamed of all these groups? Most of the ones you guys are mentioning are really kickass. I mean, not like Kris Kross or New Kids On The Block (both of which I used to adore).

As long as we're being unique and non-conformist, shouldn't we be proud about the non-goth aspects of our lives?

whats a non conformist.

i just dress like all the others to score with goth chicks

That's nothing. Some guys dress like goth chicks...to score with goth chicks.

And it works!

I thought that was emo kids?

Posted

no emo is wrong.

as are the latex twins.

i also declare them emo

Posted

I think emo kids are hot.

I love bright eyes, and sometimes, when I'm feeling sappy, I even like dashboard confessional.

Go on, spew your hate filled vomit on me.

I remember thinking kriss kross was cool... my brothers and I used to play them and jump on our parents' bed. :happydance

I owned, albeit briefly, an album by Snow. And the first album by Everlast, after he left House of Pain.

Then I heard nine inch nails, and my life changed.

Thank Bog.

(aaaaaaaand satan!)

Sadly, I wasn't introduced to non-mainstream goth/industrial music until I was in college. Steve brought me corpus delecti, bauhaus, clan of xymox. And when scott introduced the smiths to me, and the cocteau twins... I was forever grateful.

And still am, since it's forever and all.

I still listen to bands I liked in high school, stuff dated and still current.

I'll never be ashamed of my rancid, pj harvey, rammstein, sevendust, radiohead, skunk anansie, or tori amos.

I might, however, be a bit ashamed of liking godsmack, and marilyn manson. In my defense, I had a very sensationalist stage. Read - rebellious against my very normal boyfriend.

Okay, I can stop now.

No... he wasn't normal. Just in everything except his sex life and politics. (creep.)s

you like emos.

WITCH! BURN HER

Hah! I love that.

Posted

Secrets out, never goth, never was.

I don't even know what defines GOTH.

Shoot me.

Posted

i refuse to be stereotyped by as a gun mad wierdo in black.

marilyn manson tells me i should shoot you for that

Posted

My Girlfriend has told me that I am a old school punker at heart

But I don't concider myself anything really.....

I like a diverse musical selection as well as fashion.

Stereo-typing is small minded anyways.

Basically imprisoning your self into one cateragory or stereotype limits your mind to the world of choices and variety and options out there!

I like options and variety and choices!

Most Goths... in my experience... never ever would refer to themselves as such

That's right. You have to know the secret hand shake.

Then they aren't goths, are they?

Posted

Then they aren't goths, are they?

That is the paradox of goth..... *phee acts spooky*

Posted

i'm so goth i make izods goth by wearing them

Posted

They're non-non-conformists. They choose to not conform to the title "goth" that identifies the group that they normall conform to. hence, non-non-conformists. Weee! I need a smoke.

Mad Music Confession: I sing along to Matchbox in the car. (especially when it's not my car)

Non-conformists who conform to each other are still conformists.
