fallennon Posted February 24, 2005 Posted February 24, 2005 Watched this the other night. Not bad. Scared me a little. Loved the imagery...any other thoughts on this one?
Fierce Critter Posted February 25, 2005 Posted February 25, 2005 I haven't seen it. On the one hand, I heard massive critical pans. On the other, I hear some people say it was scary as hell. I'll probably rent it eventually.
gothicmom Posted February 25, 2005 Posted February 25, 2005 We saw it and enjoyed it. Some freaky spots.
SomeDanGuy Posted February 25, 2005 Posted February 25, 2005 I definitely liked it. I don't know if it was an odd day or what, but for some reason the imagery from this movie stayed with for a day or two; that never happens to me.
ohhmygoth Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 I say watch Ju-On (with the subtitles so you're forced to watch LOL). There are similar parts between the Japanese and American versions just as there were between the Ring and Ringu, but Ju-On freaked me OUT. And if you want a good marathon- grab Ju-On 2 as well. It's much scarier and in my opinion, better than the first. I still get the willies every now and again recalling certain scenes.
Ginevra Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 What must be remembered is that Ju-On: The Grudge is the third film in a trilogy. I just watched Ju On this evening, thinking it was going to be a good film but ended up with a disjointed, extremely hard if not downright impossible to follow storyline but with little wonder. Ju On incorporates images from the first two films into itself making it more difficult to understand. Yeah, it was kinda creepy. Yeah, it was kinda scary. But for myself, I think I would have been better off with the American version of The Grudge.
Rivet_HeadINC Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 My wife and I saw it on Opening Night, (Never Ever AGAIN) and we loved it. I will admit that it creeped the hell out of me. Great special effects and the story was awesome. I can't wait for the Ring Two.
TheLordShaper Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 I thought this movie was painfully predictable. It had some good imagery and decent use of sounds to enhance its freaky factor but as far as I’m concerned fell flat as far as being a good horror/thriller movie. I also think that ghost thing made the most annoying noise ever. WTF was with that? ~TLS
Ginevra Posted March 8, 2005 Posted March 8, 2005 My wife and I saw it on Opening Night, (Never Ever AGAIN) Was it packed on opening night?

I didn't know there was a Japanese version - that I definitely want to see. I find Japanese horror extremely creepy. Ringu actually gave me nightmares and that's very unusual for me.
Rivet_HeadINC Posted March 8, 2005 Posted March 8, 2005 Was it packed on opening night? It wasn't just packed, but I don't now where the common curtisy went today (probably out the door with being a gentalman, I don't know) but people were talking through out the movie and laughing at parts that weren't really that funny. It made watching the movie very hard. I mean christ, if you are asked to turn your Cell Phone off just do it. If someone needs to get a hold of you they can leave a frickin' voice mail for christ sakes.
ohhmygoth Posted March 9, 2005 Posted March 9, 2005 I also think that ghost thing made the most annoying noise ever. WTF was with that? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Kayako made the odd throat noises since her husband, Takeo, had whacked her in the throat before killing her. Being unable to scream, she made the scratchy throat noise instead. Takashi Shimizu wanted it to be realistic, but not laughable. Personally, I think he just made it that much easier to be Kayako for Halloween. I'm sorry Ginevra, I should have mentioned that also in my previous post so that the movie wouldn't be so confusing. There's actually 4 Ju-On's in all (Ju-On: The Grudge 1 and 2, and Ju-On: The Curse 1 and 2)
mandelbrotjulia Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 The Grudge wsa one of the scariest movies I've ever seen, and I've seen probably hundreds of scary movies. I actually had nightmares, which NEVER happens. The whole sister scene was freaky as hell; I actually wouldn't sleep under the covers that night. And I found the gutteral noise to be very creepy.
Black Sunday Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 Ju-On is so much better than the grudge. The Grudge left out the best scene in Ju-On (where the 3 missing girls turn up at the other school girls house). Both Ju-On and the Grudge have major plot holes but what can you do? And Ringu was far better than the Ring. It was almost exact scene by scene but Ringu just had a creepier feel to it. I hope the Ring Two is an exact replica of Ringu Two because I don't want to see someone taking the story in a completely different direction. I have to rent Isobela this weekend, there is a new wave of japanese horror that's pretty interesting, sadly we have to see inferior American versions at our theatres. But that's what we get when we Americans actually think the Blair Witch Project is good horror.

I'll have to check out the other 3 Ju On movies, I wonder if Thomas Video has them.
Ginevra Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 But that's what we get when we Americans actually think the Blair Witch Project is good horror. My ex-husband and I had rented Blair Witch Project. We had heard how scary it was and we both love horror/scary feel movies. So we rented it, camped out on the living room floor with popcorn, sodas, Twizzlers and sleeping bags, lit some candles and proceeded to watch the movie. We then proceeded to blow soda out our noses because we were laughing too much to drink or eat anything.
Saephyr Posted March 17, 2005 Posted March 17, 2005 :clover: Happy Pat's day all! Yes I saw Grudge and the original film from Japan called Ju-On. I liked the original version much better since they concentrate on suspense and practicly kill you with it
Black Sunday Posted March 18, 2005 Posted March 18, 2005 My ex-husband and I had rented Blair Witch Project. We had heard how scary it was and we both love horror/scary feel movies. I thought the movie was boring and lame. People tried to defend it by saying it was 'original' and 'fresh' but um, anyone ever see the movie 'the last broadcast' ? Blair Witch completely ripped it off and a few scenes were very blatant. Mind you I am not fan of the last broadcast either but it shoots down the argument that blair with was somehow original. Same reason I don't like Tarantino, he's a hack. Rent 'City on Fire' and then rent 'Resovior Dogs'....the guy is a plagerist.
Saephyr Posted March 18, 2005 Posted March 18, 2005 Myself i knew about the screenplay about Blair Witch for 8 years before ithit the cinema. I thought it was very sharp and the media attention was wonderful and i hadn't seen so much attention toward a horror film type since Silence Of The Lambs which was a HUGE shocker to win so much attention from the stuck up academy. I appreciated Blair Witch just to hear the crowd react at the theatre was worth it. QT is just doing what he can do. There is no such thing as a completely original story. Horror IS THE GENRE OG RIP OFFS. Even Sam RAimi would agree to that in the Evil Dead script he snatched ideas from other films. Don't we all relate the things we do day to day to each other somehow? Far as that goes I can't do what these guys do so more power to em for making me entertained I say.
