Head Wreck

wondering if anyone can help me

i backup all my CD to MP3, to reduce wear and tear and to transfer to my MP3 player. for this i use winamp.

today i have been unable to rip a CD. on investigation my music folder on C: root was read only protected, so i removed the protection and attempted again, with no joy, the folder had become read only protected again.

it seems to protect itself as soon as i exit the folder properties dialogue box.

does anyone have any insight to this issue?

Throw a rock at it and get a Mac?

I'd make sure all your music is backed up.. then reinstall WinAmp, as a first step. Maybe move the music out of the My Music folder into something else and see if you can alter the preferences there.

have you scanned for file system corruption?

Also Windows Media player can rip them just as well

and also store carp like album sleves and other mystery files in the folders....

winamp is the only one i like unf. my machine is old and cant aford crapage of the HDD.

as for system corruption, all seems fine, spyware and virus free according to zonelabs, adaware, clamav, spybot S&D

it seems that since the recent patch only progs using the windows shell apps can change stuff, nulsoft having its own file encoders/ magament code cant change fuck all.

another odity, files in folder are not write protected, but the folder props of the containing folder is dotted on file protection.... spooky

dude... I'm telling ya... file system corruption.

Click Start

the Run

type in the following command

chkdsk /f

you will get a dos box pop up with a complaint that it can't do that right now. press Y, which will schedual it for the next reboot.

Save your work, close your programs and reboot.

Go have a short walk around the yard as this will take 15 to 20min. you need the fresh air anyway.

well, ran that in cmd prompt. something else seems to be running. i think i'm gonna have a poke in MSconfig

meantime i'm running it without the switch as as the /f = fix,, which a shelled sudo dos command cant run without exclusive access to the drive/volume

chkdsk complete, no bad sectors

ahhh, but did it detect file corruption?

there should be a file in the root of c:

the name of said file eludes me at the moment, but it's jsut a txt file with a differnt expension... anyway.. it's the report generated by chkdsk. read that. notepade will open it. if it reports file corruption or inconsistancys... run it again witht he /f and reboot your pc afterwards. the chkdsk will run before windows loads and fix the problem.

if you do find something running that you dont recognize, stop the process and see if you can change the files. if you can, I'd bet you ran into some drm software gone bad. heh, all drm software is bad so like...

tech support is damn hard across the pond.

there is some corruption there but chkdsk isnt resolving the issues. i guess i better start backing up.

would the repair facility on the XP disk help in restoring the corruption in any way?

Posted

maybe... if you boot from the xp cd and go to the repair console.... run chkdsk /r now.. this is going to take a few hours to run.. but it will give your HD a damn good going over. It may fix your problem.
