BrassFusion Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 Are they talking about violent crime or all crime or just the likelihood that breathing in the sewer fumes could give you cancer? Cuz if it's just violent crime they mean, seems a little overrated...
Gothmama25 Posted November 6, 2006 Author Posted November 6, 2006 This list comes from USA Today. They had 371 cities on the list going from the safest to the most dangerous cities in the US. It was based on crime records from every city in the US except for New Orleans which did not keep records this past year.

Gothmama25 Posted November 7, 2006 Author Posted November 7, 2006 Alot of michigan cities on this list.
BrassFusion Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 Yeah. There are a lot of major cities on that list. That said... violent crime?
pomba gira Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 heh... living in Flint or Gary would definitely be dangerous for me... I'd prolly kill myself within a month. Those are about the most depressing places imaginable. But yeah, this is one of those things that's pretty meaningless unless you have detailed info about the ranking criteria. I'm wondering how they chose the cities-? Doesn't seem to be based only on population... there are cities missing that I know are bigger than some on the list. Even narrowing it down to "violent crime" doesn't give the whole picture. There's a difference between a place where people are likely to jack some random stranger walking down the street, and someplace where people are just prone to shooting or stabbing friends, neighbors, and relatives during drunken altercations.
Onyx Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 A few years ago I remember some sort of violent crime survey where Detroit was #1. Somebody's being a slacker! :laughing I have a feeling the most violent parts of the city bring the statistics way up. (There are definitely a few places in or near Detroit where I wouldn't go, but for that matter there are places like that in most large cities).
Brenda Starrr Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 Well obviously, Baltimore isn't so hot either. Might as well just move to Detroit. Frankly, the people in Detroit are nicer. I kid you not.
Homicidalheathen Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 Hehehe I am proud to live to close to the cities borders and still be alive to tell about it. I have stories I could tell you but am tired...... Like the time I got off exit 222a from I94 to piss and heard bullets wizzing over my head.......
The Kanuck Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 1. St. Louis, Mo. 2. Detroit, Mich. Also did you know that these two this year were voted best place to see a baseball game in the same order? weird huh :-o
Homicidalheathen Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 Well, we don't put money into our schools and police force so much but our staduim is rockin'! Whoo hoo.
The Kanuck Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 Hey, everyone needs entertainment! Education and protection come next. Keep the people happy? They maybe dumb and can be shot/stabbed/mugged/etc but they will be happy.
BrassFusion Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 The reason I kept asking "Violent crime?" Is because honestly, I would be surprised if that were the basis looking at the order of the cities on the list. They could be including petty crimes and stuff like some ass stealing your laptop when you're not keeping an eye on it. Or car break-ins.
Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 It is infact based on violent crime.. hence the word Safe.
BrassFusion Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 It is infact based on violent crime.. hence the word Safe. They could also mean safety of possessions. Got a link to details for this same study?
Gothmama25 Posted November 7, 2006 Author Posted November 7, 2006 USA Today Dangerous Cities Info For more information please check out the link above. This is where I got this list from.
Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 BF, the list comes out every year. It's based on violent crime. Same as every year.
BrassFusion Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 FBI figures, so *probably* violent. Probably. Not that I know or anything, because the article doesn't say. So why is it so important to you that I accept subjective data without context? And how could it be SO difficult to find the figures that they compiled this list from? Edit: Notice how high Sterling Heights is on the list. It was actually number one some years ago, and you can thank my mom for that. She's head of the records department. According to her, it's not so much the actual "safety" of any given city (duh), as how the dataset is considered. As with every dataset, every research study, every survey, everything. A list like this doesn't tell us all that much without context.
Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 And how could it be SO difficult to find the figures that they compiled this list from? It took me about 20 seconds to find out the context of the list. I didn't post it. You have the question, seek your own answer.
torn asunder Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 oh, look - it's the bickersons!! :laughing
Soulrev Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 am I just blind or is Chicago not even on that list?
pomba gira Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 These lists are compiled every year, by several different entities, and I can't remember ever seeing one where ratings for "safety" weren't based on violent crime statistics from the FBI. Other types of crime get thrown in if they'e talking about overall quality of life, or just crime rates in general- and even rankings of cities by "crime rate" are usually broken down into violent and nonviolent or property crimes. Knowing all that, I really don't see where it's so far-fetched to assume this particular list is based on violent crime. just my .02
