glc Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 Hey, I'm new here, and I'm from Far Far away! (Australia) My family has moved to Detroit and I will be visiting 3 or 4 times a year. My first trip will be in Jan 07. If anyone feels like sharing some info with me like where I can eat, drink, shop, catch some music, I'd sure like to hear about it! Yeah, I could search through the forums and find all this stuff out but how impersonal is that?! This way I can introduce myself and maybe meet some people aswell on my travels.
Paper Hearts Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 Food: 1. Bring an amount of Promite, Marmite, and Vegemite equal to what you will require, you'll not find it here. 2. Bring at least one box of Tim Tams. 3. If you're more into British fare, actually try the UK. If you're more of a curry person, you'll find it here, but not without some confusion. If you like American fare, then it really doesn't matter where you eat, does it? Drink: There are quite a few decent locals in Detroit, although the club scene in this sour pocket of inhumanity, really only lasted for about a half decade and you missed it. Still, there are many clubs in Detroit, although clubs marked with historical relevance rather than contemporary relevance. If you want atmosphere, try Hamtramck: in Hamtramck atmosphere is a palpable carcinogenic vapor which may cause you to cough until nausea. The Magic Stick is a good place for live rock, although I would recommend Baker's Keyboard Lounge over that place, really. Shopping: John King Books Detroit is a hidden gem, like finding a pearl in a zebra mussel.
glc Posted November 23, 2006 Author Posted November 23, 2006 Vegemite, check. I'm definitely a curry fan - Thai, Indian, it's all good! I've heard about Baker's and I'll definietly be checking it out. That was on my list already actually so thanks for the validation. Books will be a necessity with all that plane travel, it's like 20hrs each way. groan. Thanks paper

Hope you stick around. =) Thanks Troy, yeah I think I'll stick around for a while - I've been couped up at home for the last few years, not being very social, I've never gotten into the whole internet people meeting thing either, so I'm a virgin forum poster, or member, or whatever. But anyway, if I can meet some people here and hang out when I'm in Detroit that would be cool. I need to get a bit more social!!!
phee Posted November 23, 2006 Posted November 23, 2006 Hello there!! and welcome... (I could always use another didg for my collection.... just saying)
BrassFusion Posted November 23, 2006 Posted November 23, 2006 I could introduce you to some hot chicks who dig Australian accents. Like, me. :
honeymustard02 Posted November 23, 2006 Posted November 23, 2006 OT but I found this to be funny as hell. Then again I should be sleeping an am not. :/ ok well back to topic!!! There are quite a few decent locals in Detroit, although the club scene in this sour pocket of inhumanity, really only lasted for about a half decade and you missed it.
honeymustard02 Posted November 23, 2006 Posted November 23, 2006 Oh sorry I forgot, I'm being rude! Welcome to the board Aus accents are sexy!!! *wink* I am of no help when talking of Detroit, never been. But I do hope you enjoy!!
Onyx Posted November 24, 2006 Posted November 24, 2006 Thanks Troy, yeah I think I'll stick around for a while - I've been couped up at home for the last few years, not being very social, I've never gotten into the whole internet people meeting thing either, so I'm a virgin forum poster, or member, or whatever. But anyway, if I can meet some people here and hang out when I'm in Detroit that would be cool. I need to get a bit more social!!! There is usually a Saturday night gathering of at least some DGNers to the right of the bar at CityClub. It's sort of rough around the edges to put it mildly. (Sort of like The Shining, except dirtier) but there are a lot of interesting folk who show up. http://www.detroitgothic.net/index.php?showtopic=13033
Onyx Posted November 24, 2006 Posted November 24, 2006 OT but I found this to be funny as hell. Then again I should be sleeping an am not. :/ ok well back to topic!!! Heh heh. So did I. (especially the "sour pocket of inhumanity" - that was art).
glc Posted November 24, 2006 Author Posted November 24, 2006 Thanks for the welcomes guys, never thought I'd ever hear anyone describe an aussie accent as sexy, but I won't complain! Phee - I do actually have a didg, funnily enough. I'm not that great at it but, although I'm starting to get the circular breathing thing down.

AstralCrux Posted November 24, 2006 Posted November 24, 2006 Ah, the Aussie accent! The only accent known to make me completely tongue-tied. And I talk for a living- mostly. I was checking in a guest from AUS and could barely get words out- words mind you that I repeat over and over every day. I actually just started making strange sounds. It was horrible! Anyway, when you come to Detroit I'm gonna save myself some time and duct-tape my mouth shut. Hi, welcome to the board!
