gothicmom Posted March 5, 2005 Posted March 5, 2005 Why is it that we crave things so badly that we cannot rest until we get it? I'm primarily thinking about food cravings. It's a strange thing. Right now I am craving Taco Bell so badly that I know what ever I do eat isn't going to taste as good as it usually does simply because it's NOT Taco Bell. I know that sometimes we crave the foods our body is lacking. For example, if I'm craving an orange then my body is probalbly lacking Vitamin C. But silly things like Taco Bell or chocolate is beyond me.
TomCat Posted March 5, 2005 Posted March 5, 2005 Hmm, maybe an Iron deficiency, so you want the sweet, savory meat. Could be that.
honeymustard02 Posted March 5, 2005 Posted March 5, 2005 Taco Bell ucky I say make some home made ones. At least then you know it's actual meat in there
Nienna Posted March 6, 2005 Posted March 6, 2005 Taco Bell has crack in it. That's the only explanation. I get the Toxic Hell jones all the time. It's gross, fake, nasty food..... but I gotta have it. And when I get it it's positively orgasmic. I donno... but I feel your pain!
The_Dark Posted March 6, 2005 Posted March 6, 2005 chocolate causes the brain to release the same chemicals as an orgasm does. Chocolate right after sex is really good... As for Taco Bell.... well... You crave something long, round and thick... and you want the after glow of sex... Odd, I cant figure out what your body is telling you that it wants....
Brenda Starrr Posted March 6, 2005 Posted March 6, 2005 It's telling you that you need the warmth of natural gas.
Nienna Posted March 6, 2005 Posted March 6, 2005 It's telling you that you need the warmth of natural gas. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> He he Methane Power!!
Jarodaka Posted March 6, 2005 Posted March 6, 2005 Taco Bell has crack in it. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I knew there was something. /Chris Rock reference
gothicmom Posted March 6, 2005 Author Posted March 6, 2005 I say make some home made ones. At least then you know it's actual meat in there NOT THE SAME!!!!!!!!!! Taco Bell has crack in it. Vater Araignee Posted March 8, 2005 Posted March 8, 2005 My reply on this would be more Spiritual but then again innerpeace are linked. Cravings are of the flesh and as long as we fight then the nothing is as good because our bodies are single minded in their desires and dont get as disracted as the brain.
torn asunder Posted March 8, 2005 Posted March 8, 2005 cravings? "you can never get enough of what you don't really need." i'll leave it at that for now... :whistling:
Fierce Critter Posted March 8, 2005 Posted March 8, 2005 I have pondered this myself, for YEARS, and still dont' hve an answer. Oh, I followed a nutrition book for a while that suggested giving in -totally - to cravings. if you body craves chocolate chip cookies - eat them, but eat ONLY them. Then, if your body craves steak - eat just steak. I tried it - and damn if it didn't work. Eventually, my body evened-out and my cravings ran to more normal things like salads, chicken, etc. The same book advocated keeping a larder stocked with things, rather than others that promoted cleaning your kitchen bare. The reasoning was that, psychologically, if you KNEW the food was there, your "fear of deprivation" wouldn't kick in and make you frantic for what you want. That kinda makes sense for me. For instance, if I'm craving whipped cream, I can go grab a can of whipped cream, eat a couple tablespoons full, and be totally happy - craving gone, I go on with my day. But if that whipped cream isn't there, then I will eat EVERYTHING ELSE around me trying to make that craving go away - and in the end, I STILL want whipped cream. It just makes sense to me. If you're "Craving" something, then eating all the tofu, carrots & fat-free yogurt in the world isn't going to satisfy you. The problem comes in, however, when you over-indulge your craving. I used to, but have gotten better about that - MUCH better. If I'm craving M&M's, I dole out a small portion and put the rest away. I have to kinda concentrate on what I'm eating then, and it helps me realize I've satisfied that craving. It really works. And it helps to enjoy your craved item s l o w l y and completely. I eat m&m's extremely methodically - I let it soak on my tongue for a while, then carefully crack off the softened shell and slip it off with my tongue, then chew the shell with my teeth while the chocolate melts on my tongue. Take that much care & time eating an m&m and eventually you get freakin' SICK of them!
Daniel Posted March 11, 2005 Posted March 11, 2005 I wonder if we would have uncontrollable cravings for chocolate and ice cream if we were thrust from our current, comfortable enviornments into some weird Mad Maxx post-apocalyptic world where survival is a constant struggle. Or, rather, maybe just forced to live in a desert, third world country, with no money, in a hut, where we had to scrounge for bugs and weeds just to get anything to eat. I mean, chocolate and ice cream would seem heavenly then, but what would we do with our cravings?

I mean, chocolate and ice cream would seem heavenly then, but what would we do with our cravings? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I've been trying to follow the South Beach diet (yes, I know it sounds like another crapola hollywood starvation plan, but it isn't) and it is helping with cravings. This diet was designed by a cardiologist who noticed that even when his patients followed the AHA's diet recommendations they still went on to have heart attacks and strokes and still gained weight. He cuts out the carbs for two weeks, concentrates on "good" fats like olive oil and includes greens, no fruit or high-sugar foods (low glycemic like diabetics do). The next two weeks you gradually add in breads and fruit and the next two weeks you go on your lifetime maintenance diet. He claims it will do away with sugar cravings and keep your cholesterol low and also let you lose weight without being hungry. My cholesterol is sky-high despite having a normal weight, so I have to do something. I find it very similar to the diet my doctor gave me to follow. It seems to be working for me as far as killing the cravings, but I find the lack of bread and fruit juices and sweet drinks the first two weeks keep tripping me up and I have to keep starting over. The physical cravings go away after about three days but the - errrr how to put this? Emotional cravings I guess is what it is - these are very hard to deal with. I adore bread and sweet drinks even when not physically craving them.
paradox Posted March 11, 2005 Posted March 11, 2005 i heard somewhere recently (mightve been on TV) that some people get strange craving for dirt or grass or the like. it supposedly means nutritional imbalances. i say if you have an itch (or a craving) scratch it.
Brenda Starrr Posted March 11, 2005 Posted March 11, 2005 My mom used to crave Milkbone dog biscuits and cigarrette ashes.
Nienna Posted March 12, 2005 Posted March 12, 2005 My mom used to crave Milkbone dog biscuits and cigarrette ashes. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> WHAT?? ewww...
Fierce Critter Posted March 12, 2005 Posted March 12, 2005 There is a trace amount of ash in some dog/catfood & treats. There must be something to that that's easily searchable on the net.
paradox Posted March 12, 2005 Posted March 12, 2005 low iron? i recall ash being mentioned in conjuction with low iron... could be wrong...
gothicmom Posted March 13, 2005 Author Posted March 13, 2005 That kinda makes sense for me. I hate it when I feel like I want to eat something, but I'm not sure what it is that I want and i end up eating everything possible. I do try to occupy myself to side track my thnking but that doesn't always work. The mind and body is an odd thing!
Marblez Posted March 13, 2005 Posted March 13, 2005 My mom used to crave Milkbone dog biscuits and cigarrette ashes. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> A friend of mine had a relative that went for Hypnotherapy to get her to quit smoking. The hypnotist suggested during the session that whenever she thinks of smoking, she think of licking ashtrays.... Did your mom ever try hypnosis?
