SUBTITLED MOVIES RULE :animier:

Seriously!

If a movie hits theatres with subtitles, it's like an automatic crap filter.

I know that there's a much better chance that the movie will be compelling than the average hollywood drek.

Damn there are so many great films out right now.

I want to see them all!

Pan's does have some disturbing violence but honestly, most of the film is compelling drama, as opposed to Hostile, which was simply nonstop sickness for sicks case.

Pan's is not the movie you see if you're in the mood for Saw 4.

And, like 70's porn, if you took out the "action" you'd still have quite a storyline.

I didn't mind the "good" and "bad," because as much as I've read about WWII, fascism, and the Holocaust, that really WAS a time for good and evil. Nazis (or in this case Spanish fascists) had to be coldhearted to be able out the indescribable violence they did.

Zyklon Band gas chambers were invented because the earlier death marches were too psychologically damaging for officers.

Jews were never called by name, neither was the word death found anywhere in the recovered Nazi documents of the era. It was all euphimized to distance themselves from what they carried out.

Anyway,

I found this movie so moving, and the ending was beautiful and bittersweet.

So many good movies fall apart at the end.

This one fully came together, and makes you think and feel afterwards.

I love movies that do that.

(Although I will admit the humanoid monster with eyes on his hands and a reputation for impaling children- NONE of which takes place in the movie-was pretty cool.)

Okay, I'm still scarred by this film, but I'm listening to a really, really good interview with Guillermo del Toro, the writer/director/producer, on "Fresh Air" on NPR. It's very long but so interesting. He talks about not only the film but also his upbringing in Mexico and the experiences that have influenced him as a filmmaker (and his upcoming Hellboy sequel a little bit). He's a great storyteller and it's a very engrossing listen. Plus his voice is very nice. :D

The article, which is just about the film, is here, and the audio-interview with del Toro is linked down the page a little, on the left.

Thanks for the link =) It was awesome ... this is Frressshh air =)

No problem! I really love this guy after listening to him talk. Have you guys seen the movie yet?

Frankly, it was one of the most depressing films I've ever seen.

At least the way I interpreted it.

This was a, it's-so-bleak-and-goddamn-depressing-I-don't-even-think-I-can-get-the-razor-I'm-so-traumatized, kind of thing.

No offense babe, but you repost this every few months. And believe me, you're not going to find that "special girl" at CC. You're just not.

I actually found it to be somewhat uplifting ans fascinating! I didn't get depressing at all...

It was a very haunting and amazing movie... Left a lot of unanswered questions....

This movie will stick with me for a long time

I thought it was good but it coulda been better......sorry. Just, the story line was lacking a bit.

I guess that my expectations were just up too high after hearing so much about how disturbing it was and reading everybodys reviews. I though it was a good movie, but not great by far. It was one of those movies that I wish I would have just waited for the dvd to come out.

but I was terrified after watching Hostle

Then get ready for the sequel!

I thought it was well done and intriguing. I didn't find this particularly depressing or frightening, and the violence really didn't bother me(though maybe that's because I've seen enough real people bloody that special-effect gore doesn't phase me much). I don't know if I'd say it lives up to all the hype, but I thought it was a good movie.

We saw it last night. it was like most traditional European fairy tales (like Grimms or russian... or spanish for that matter)

Holli and I thought thought it was quite good. I would like to see it again before its on video. I of course did not mind the subtitles (spanish is far easier on the ears than finnish or dutch).

Please explain why/ how it was disturbing, I did not see it that way at all (and no fair using the Charlie Manson "it was witchy" one word cop outs :-P )

I posted twice because I am extra cool (not because of a Comcast hiccup)

So we finally got to see it last night. I have to agree with pretty much everything Ms. TG had to say. Still one of the best I've seen in a long time.

I'm glad that both Jarod and I were able to focus on the movie. We both understand and speak Spanish. So all of our time was spent paying attention to the detail of the scene at hand. The cinematography in this film is truly amazing. The lighting is beautiful and SO well done. It left me in awe.

so how did the subtitles compare to what was really said!? i've always been curious about that, not being fluent in any other languages...
