You should definitely check out Cost Plus, it is very much like pier one, but better prices in my experience.

Move everything out of one room, pull up the carpet, and put down tatami mats. If anyone asks where your furniture is, just yank the futon mattress out of the closet and toss it to them. Maybe come winter you can get a kotatsu. That's all you really need.
