Boycott Exxon Mobil

I think maybe this might be a good chance to make change.

If anyone has a better idea - feel free to post it here.

I'm just grateful that I found decent employment WAY closer to home.

They try this every time the gas prices go up. It never works. For one, hardly anyone cares enough to be that inconvenienced. Two.. As Troy pointed out in another thread, the prices are not that high considering inflation. Three... Gas is a finite resource. GET USED TO THE IDEA THAT IT"S NEVER GOING TO BE CHEAP AGAIN. Four. We're still far cheaper then most other countries.

What kills me is the volatility of the prices. Raising 70 - 80 cents in a few weeks? That's insane.

i think i made a bulletin about this on myspace the other day. my great idea was:

"if you want to spend less money at the pumps, use less gas."

that is the only thing that will work. even a band-aid boycott like that one would fail overnight because the instant the exxon-mobil prices dipped noticeably (if they did, which they wouldn't anyway), everyone would flock there, boycott or no.

I already ride a bike to work, some traveling people just can't avoid, giving the "use less gas" solution really wouldn't work at all.

As for inflation, I really have a difficult time seeing how the chart Troy said makes sense at all when, jobs don't pay like they used to, and prices for everything else go up. There's also this that makes me wonder if there really is any practical reason for prices to go up other than the petro fat cats getting too fuckin greedy.

In my opinion everyone of these Exxon/Mobil ceo's needs a bullet in the head, greedy fucking assholes, the main reason the worlds economy is in danger of collapse

I'd rather seem them catch genetal warts, then have it hit public news that they caught the warts from their daughters...

has it occured to anyone that a temporary boycott could inflate prices?

i really can't remember the last time i bought gas from exxon/mobil, because it seems like they're usually a few cents higher than surrounding stations. I guess the only time lately was when it was my only alternative. People who buy gas from Mobil are doing it for those reasons, or because they like the coffee they have there in the mornings, or it's a convenient turn for them on the way to work. They don't really care that it's a few cents more, and would not be affected by the boycott.

If Exxon/Mobil started losing money due to a few thousand people boycotting them for a limited period of time, they would raise their prices by a couple cents to make up for it, which could cause the other oil companies to follow suit. It would take a much more drastic presence to effect a price drop, and it simply isn't going to happen. There are too many trucks on the freeway, too many planes in the air, and too many ships on the sea to expect a grassroots boycott to make any difference.

If you want to spend less money on gas, use less gas. That, I promise, is the only thing that will work- but there are so many ways to do it. Carpooling, biking, walking, smaller vehicles, alternative energy. Brainstorm some more on your own, I gotta drive ten miles to work at a job that's still worth it despite the gas prices.

If I didn't have kids to tote around, I'd be the proud rider of a Honda Reflex. An employee of my father's drives one daily from Tecumseh to Wayne. A 250cc freeway legal scooter (between a moped and motorcycle) like his gets 80 mpg. Yes, he even gets over 70 mph on it.

Yah it pisses me off. What are all these young guys (and girls) going over there dying for anyway?

WTF???

It is like a stand off when I want to go visit someone far away now.....no you come see ME this time, no its YOUR turn.....ect.......ect.......

Shop around for the best price to something? No, it takes to much gas....its actually cheaper to buy something if you find it right away.

I have to drive all the way to Waterford almost everyday now and in two trips all my gas is gone.

I almost wish I had not bought this car. It guzzles so bad.

43 bucks to fill it the other day.

Almost any motorcycle gets good mileage. The problem is bad/cold weather. They have a few enclosed/semi-enclosed motorcycle type vehicles that would be better. Still... snow is always going to be a problem on two wheels.

I'd probably consider a Honda Insight or something two-seater-ish if I didn't have the girls.

Nothing wrong with saving gas on the good days. :) It all helps.

That's an alternative that would have every tree huggin hippie throwing a big temper tantrum over, i mean i see the pro's and cons about alaska by it's self and i generally don't think it's a good idea.

Again, the use less gas idea isn't going to work. Most people don't even joy ride, most of us need to drive to work due to distance (i'm lucky my work is close enough to ride a bike to) groceries, toting kids around ect. And carpooling isn't always an option. And you can't control the rate of gas milage your vehicle uses really. When you say "Use less Gas" it just makes you seem like you're not putting much thought in this at all. I'm not trying to be mean, but the impractical idea of this suggestion is just obvious.

The boycott would get exxon to raise prices i'm sure, but really, what other ways of control/fighting back do we have? So you don't care, ok cool, then don't even TRY complaining about the $5 per gallon when it happens. It's simple economics..... Exxon Mobile are the bullies on the block, they tell you how much their gas costs, and the smaller companies raise the prices right up with them but a few cents under to keep up with profit. If we stop spending our gas money at ExxonMobil, then obviously they won't make money. And whatever the hell happened to people that gave a fuck? It seems the past few years everyone got lazy and stopped caring, like it isn't cool to take action in such things. That's honestly in my opinion, the MAIN cause in all our problems, our apathy. Something happens we don't like, we start bitching, everyone becomes an armchair critic, but does anyone DO anything about this? No, we bitch with no action. They don't listen to us folks, they're too busy counting their money. So honestly, I don't see what right someone has to bitch about something if they're not going to participate in any action to help change what they're bitching about. End of story.

did you know, that in Europe, particularly in Greece, a gallon of gas goes for $17 a gallon ?

Only thing that pisses me off about gas prices other then that they seem to go up every day, is that last year when I decided to visit Michigan by driving out there, the further west I travelled, on my way out there, the cheaper the gas prices got. Gas is or was at the time, about 50 cents a gallon cheaper in Michigan then in CT where I live.

I paid only $2.79 last night. Rah for Danville, Kentucky!

ive got a moped. i go double the places i did when i had my car. in an average month even with gas prices this high i can still only expect to shell out maybe 15 bucks. i get about 100 miles to the gallon right now, and even once i get my speed kit put on ill still be getting anywhere from 80-85 miles to the gallon.

"When inflation is factored in, Lundberg's record of $3.07 still trails the all-time high in March 1981. At the time, gasoline cost $1.35 a gallon - and in today's dollars, that's $3.13 a gallon, said Lundberg.

Also, Americans earn a lot more now than they did in the early 1980s, so by some measures what people spend now on gas is only half of what is used to be.

In 1980, the average American had to work 105 minutes to buy enough gas to drive the average car 100 miles, David Wyss, chief economist at Standard & Poor's, said in a study last year. By 2006, the average American needed to work only 52 minutes, thanks in part to better fuel efficiency but mostly due to higher wages.

It's also worth noting that while $4 gasoline would be a record for American motorists, in Europe it's common due to high taxes. The average price for a gallon of gas in the Netherlands is over $7, and it's over $6 in many European countries."

Wow ... I paid like $3.89 last time I filled up my car.

I hate living too close to Ann Arbor when I need gasoline. Gasoline out at my parents out in the boonies of New Hudson yesterday was $3.03 a gallon. It was $3.45 here.

Also too many jobs pay like even though I make decent money, there are alot of others who are getting paid way below the cost of living, which is bs.

Dude, I remember when I had a fit because gas was over a dollar a gallon.
