The Auruks who are at home in present day Chile still use Datura in much the same way as their ancestors did. It not only plays a significant role as a shamanic plant but is also widely used as medicine. They even give a brew of the leaves (Datura ferox) to unruly children - trusting in the powerful plant-spirit to teach the children a good measure of respect. The Jivaros prepare a drink with roasted maize and the juice of Brugmansia sanguinea fruits for the same purpose.

I have heard of spare the rod, spoil the child but....make the kid od and trip on his ass and he will straighten up? LOL!

I have to read the book now. I didn't quite know what they were doing in the movie....thought it was just drugs.

The plant is used for Shamanistic purposes, but it must be done perfectly or it can cause very bad things to happen. Certain parts of the plant are highly toxic and should not be consumed. Other parts, such as the pulp are used in their rituals. It is ground up, and I have no idea what's added to it or how it is cooked, but it is then administred to a shaman while two other shamans remain present to watch over the one being induced. The effects are highly hallucinogenic. It is the job of the other two shamans to make sure the one taking the stuff doesn't do any injury to himself. Just a bit of interesting trivia.

As for the plant itself....there are some varieties sold for gardening purposes in the US, but I'm relativly sure that these are not as potent. I personally, grow Burgmansia (the tree form/variety of Datura). The tree can get extremely large in a tropic region. In the US, though, I have to have them confined to containers and move them in and out of doors as the weather in Indiana is much too cold for them to survive a winter here. Their blooms are magnificent, huge bell shaped flowers. I really love them, there are many different colors too. Propogation can be tricky. I've looked at websites on propogating and tried many of the recommended ways, but frankly, what I found works best, is simply taking a branch cutting and putting it in water until it roots and then transplanting it. So far that method has worked every time for me.

On a side note...if you fear ingestion of the plant (a wise person should unless they know exactly what they are doing) an incense can be made from the seeds. Again though, I would recommend caution, don't directly inhale the smoke.

So this is NOT the same as moon flower. But IS thornapple.....

The one the guy describes I see growing here.

We are thinking of doing the *gulp* enema.

I have an experienced baby sitter who administered and sat me through my first Salvia Divinorum trip so I am ok there.

I wanted to get up and walk through a wall on that one too....to go talk to the plant goddess.

I know moon flower is certainly NOT the same thing, it's not even in the same family. As for thornapple, I'm not sure but the plant that I know as thornapple (if it's the same one you're talking about) is actually a member of the Rose family. I'd have to do some research before I could tell you what family Datrura and Bergmansia are in but I'm 99% sure they're not in either of those families. Moonflower is in the same family as Morning Glories (which can be hallucinogenic but is also highly toxic) but I don't have enough expierence with it to give any type of advice in regards to administration of it. As for the enema; I've never heard of it being taken that way. It would still be entering the bloodstream as if ingested, but I think it would be much faster. Kind of like the difference between snorting something and shooting it. Basically, what I'm saying here is...Taking it that way, as opposed to, ingestion is not going to make it safer (if that's what you're thinking) On the other hand, if it's the quick effect you're after then you'd be on the right track. I would suggest lots of caution though; it can be a lethal plant (the Datura/Bergmansia), but make sure you actually have the RIGHT plant! There are a lot of plant varieties out there that are so toxic even touching your mouth with your fingers after touching the plant can be enough to kill you (Foxglove, for example). Just make sure you're positive that you have the right plant. I'm not at home right now, but if you want, when I get there I could send you some links (I think I still have them) to some informational websites on Datura. They could be useful in the ID process. Hope this helps.

Well if I have to grow a tree in the house, I may not do it. I don't have good luck there. I have one and it almost died once this year already.....just replanted it. And taking it outside on nice days is out of the question. I live near the river so we have these mites you can't get rid of, they fall off of birds and get all over EVERYTHING. I lost half my house plants to these mites a yr ago because I took a few plants outside for a day of sun and whatnot. They infested

EVERYTHING but some links yah would be nice. homicidal_heathen@yahoo thanks!
