odims_sphere Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 I got a call today which came up unknown on my caller ID. I answered it and some lady asked to speak with me and called my by name. I asked who it was and she said Fifth third bank, which my mortgage is through. She then asked me to verify my address for the security of my account. I said wait a minute, you called me, your number is Unknown, i'm not giving out that information, How do I know you are who you say you are? Now I know most likely it probably was the bank calling, but I just don't feel right about giving out personal information to someone unless I'm 100% sure who it is. Perhaps I'm being over cautious, I don't know. What do you think?
Gauge Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 i would say if theirs any question dont give them any info. if you think it might be legit, ask for their name and branch location and give that location a call back, or call your local branch.
Rayne Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 I refuse to give out personal info over the phone ... PERIOD, unless I call them. I won't do it. I've had severe issues with identity theft in the past. It's horrible. It's been YEARS and I'm still dealing with the fallout.
know_buddy_kares Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 I've had similar problems. The last bank i was with called me on a private number that came up as "Restricted", So I told them I'll give no information, and why, and said that I'll contact my bank. I was polite about it, and turned around and called my bank up. I got the same chick, who gave me nothing but attitude because of it. I hung up on her and removed my business from them shortly after as anytime I'd try to get things done with them they'd never want to do their damn job. But yeah, I've had weird callsfrom many people on my phone before. It's always better to be safe than sorry. At least this way for me, it was the last straw that made the bank loose my business.
Scary Guy Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 I'll give out info that pretty much anyone can get, namely my address. If your near the computer you can stick in the number and see what comes up. Usually if it's legit it will pop up under one of their websites. If you want to be ultra paranoid you can check if it's known as a phisihng website. Or just do the ultra smart thing and say "I'll come in to speak to someone personally at "X" branch about it".
GOREgeouslyDecorated Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 yea, I dont do that either - you could have asked the name of the lady and called back the bank and asked for her to make sure it was legit, ya know?
Onyx Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 Yeah, I think you did the right thing. Anything that comes up as Unknown Caller I don't even answer. I also have calls blocked through my phone service that are blocking their number to call me. It catches most of them but a few get through. If they can't show me their number on my caller ID then I don't pick up.
Troy Spiral (13) Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 Unless your expecting the call and/or know the person.. fuck em. Not worth it. You dont necessarily have to originated the call but it should be expected, or from someone you trust / know. For instance i've had several instances were i bought something online, and that company called me to verify my info which is legit i think. Just trying to cut down on CC fraud. But if they call me out of the blue and just start asking that type of question? Generally.. fuck em. In your particular case i'm just guessing that it probably really was the bank just calling to verify your address but ... eh... not worth it.
Scary Guy Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 50% of the calls to the house phone are telemarketers. I don't even answer it usually, it's why I have a cellphone.
creatureofthenyte Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 Like others here have said, and I agree with, NEVER give out personal info over the phone, or online for that matter. Always deal with bank stuff by going to the bank and talk to them face to face. Also, NEVER give out your personal info online. I purchased a pair of boots online a few years ago, and my credit card info was phished. A few days later, I receieved a bill for a $3400 computer that I didn't buy. The charge was wiped from my account thankfully. Better to be safe then sorry, especially when it comes to bank business.
Troy Spiral (13) Posted May 18, 2007 Posted May 18, 2007 Although im a "do as i say not as i do" type guy. Since i personally have no problem giving out personal info. Anyone wana call me or harrass me? 734 560 8177 Hate mail? Troy Crayson 36504 Fairchild Westland Mi 48186
Scary Guy Posted May 18, 2007 Posted May 18, 2007 I don't really believe on giving my details out over the net. If anyone wants them they can e-mail me. Although I might just have to pop down for a visit sometime now Troy.
