'We showed you a blurry look at Britney's San Diego performance as soon as we possibly could last night, but here's a little clearer view of what went down. As we mentioned, she was on stage for under 20 minutes, performing 5 songs (nothing new). I'm going to really try and reserve judgment on what little video I have seen (check out a little bit of it here and here), but I think it's safe to say that things are still a wee bit rusty. That's all to be expected, of course. All accounts say that she lip synced the whole way, to be fair though, that's pretty much always been her MO'

And people are surprised? Common. I have done both. One cannot sing real well and dance around like that at the same time. It makes your voice jiggle. Ever see Whitney do the splits? No. Of coarse not. She is too busy trying to hit the right notes.

then maybe performers should do one or the other instead of being phonies

Well yah thats what I think but I am old school.

Just goes to show that some performers get by on their looks and not their talent.

Britney probably figures she can get by with lipsyncing if she wears as little clothing as possible, as a means of distracting the audience from what a washed up has-been she has become.

After Milli Vinilli I don't even know If I watching someone lip sync to their own voice.

That could be one of the reasons why Type O Negative is my favorite band, they don't lipsync..

I was under the impression that it was the norm for "theatrical dancer singers" to lip sync their live performances. Its often just assumed , sort of like its assumed professional wrestling is staged. People still enjoy it even if they know its "fake."

Who is to say what the nature of entertainment should be? The primary goal of entertainment is to entertain. It's not to impress, educate or otherwise uplift community or culture. It can have aspects of other features , but primarily its meant for entertainment.

The pop-dancer-singer shows are more "musical fluff performance displays" than traditional concerts.

I do think theres an assumption that any musical performances with singers in them should have live vocals, but im not sure that assumption is held as widely as it once was.

There are sooo many singers that have a voice which blows Britney's out of the water. Unfortunately, they are not as attractive (to commercial audiences) and don't dance as well. Britney has the right balance of voice and stage presence to be able to survive in the pop idol world.

I don't watch it but this is why I don't get mad when others complain about less talented singers moving up in American Idol. People complain about it being a popularity contest. They don't realize that that IS THE POINT!! It is not a singing contest, it is about your ability to woo audiences.

And I personally blame Madonna for really making that mainstream.

Fucking. Hate. Madonna.
