Back To Goth? (newbie Intro)

Hello folks,

I'm a new poster but sometime lurker finally getting up the nerve to introduce myself. I'm not good at these intro things but here goes anyway: I'm 37, married, gothy sort of. Back in the 80's I was just the loner girl who wore too much make-up and black. Does that make me goth? I never thought of a label for myself but that seems to be all the rage nowadays. It seems the closer I get to 40 the more myself I become. So, I'm here to make like-minded friends and slowly but surely come out of my shell. Maybe I will even get up the nerve to come to City Club.

I wouldnt worry to much about if "you are goth or not" there is probably 4 people on this whole board that would publicly admit to "being goth". The key idea around here is the anti-goth concept of "being friendly"

Thanks for the welcome everyone. Actually when I say "nerve" I don't mean the "OMG I'm afraid of Detroit" thing I mean the "OMG I'm shy and quiet" thing. I'm getting over that as I age. Isn't that wonderful how that happens? I will definitely be throwing my 2 cents in here and there.

My bad! I meant to sign my name Ivy. Force of habit I guess. I will try to remember, so Ivy it is.

Now off to figure out how to answer those newbie questions.

Okay I just did the copy and paste thing. Here goes:

Current location?: Whitmore Lake, MI

Where from?: I lived in Belleville, MI until I was 10 and then lived in Inkster, MI until I was about 26. A six-month stint in California with a loony relative that sent me running back to Michigan.

Work?: Medical transcription from home. I'm working for a new company and so far so good. I formerly did massage therapy for 10 years.

School?: Irene's Myomassology Institute in Southfield, MI (massage), Everett Community College in Washington (medical transcription). I attended Cherry Hill High School in Inkster (now a charter school I believe). I'm taking online graphic design classes through Sessions.edu

Kids?: None thanks.

Married?: Yes going on 2 years now.

Hobbies?: Geek, aspiring writer (erotica, sci-fi/fantasy) and graphic artist, spirituality, getting back into yoga and getting fit (I have a long way to go). I just started going to sci-fi cons in Michigan last year and love it.

Additional ideas / questions: Not yet. Oh, I love DGN Radio. What a great idea!

I agree. I've never really stopped being who I am. I'm just more comfortable in my skin. Thanks for the welcome. Please tell where these other clubs are if you don't mind. I will search the board too and the ever wonderful Google.

Wow now that was a good job answering the nosey.. er welcome questions. =D

DGN Radio unfortunately, i think is going to go bye bye for at least awhile. The donations just aren't covering it and the amount of use it gets doesn't really justify the out-of-pocket cost every month. Currently DGN is at a low-ebb in terms of activity of users. Note the statistic at to bottom of the board main page "127 daily posts" thats very low for us historically it is a lot for some boards, but its near ghost-town level for DGN. Its due basically due to our promotions engine being non-existent for the last year or so. Thats going to change soon, as i get my ass back in gear , so once the activity picks up im sure there will be enough bodies.. and ears to cover the costs of the radio stream.

I think your bio fits the description of many if not most of us "older" folk on DGN. Hell even the Sci Fi thing and the recognition of "less shyness with age".

Irene's ? I went to AAIMT but still. One thing i still cant get over is how many nice people there are in the massage industry. Its amazing.

Illustrator? Well i majored in illustration/graphic design in one form or another starting at around age 6 until i finally sold my soul to the corporate devil a few years into U of M (CSS was the plan but it was too expensive i thought). =(

Medical Transcription from home? I keep thinking that might be a good route for me with my various health issues which prevent me from having a "normal" job.

I've never been married , but i came close once. Didn't work out due to .. well a car accident.

Anyhow nice to see a friendly new face on the board. If you have any problems with the "tech" of the board or anything else don't hesitate to contact me or any of the mods.

It seems there are all types of folks here at DGN from different demographics. That is one of the things that drew me here. I don't feel so bad about being one of the "older" folks.

Do you still practice massage? Yes, there are a lot of good people in the field. After 10 years of massage and then finally starting a home cleaning business for some of my clients I burned out. I really wanted a sit-down job and medical transcription seemed to fit my personality. After two years as an independent contractor I'm now an employee which was my goal. I feel like I have the best of both worlds of self-employment and being an employee so I'm hyped right now.

U of M isn't such a bad place to sell your soul to. My husband works there and the benefits are amazing. If you ever think medical transcription is right for you then you are in a good position to get a job with U of M. As you know they like to hire within first. That was one of the first places I applied right out of school but I found work immediately with another company. I completely understand the health issue. That is another reason that I went into this field. It's tedious though so a person would have to not mind repetitive work.

LOL...I'm not even close to calling myself and illustrator yet. This new job will allow me more time for classes though. I would love to do some freelance illustration for magazines, books, etc. Nothing to leave my day job over. Just something to express myself and grow artistically. What is your favorite type of work to do?

DGN Radio is fairly new-ish maybe a year old. (i could check but thats close enough to make the point) Many people had asked for such a thing over the years, but in the event, not enough were willing to help pay for it. Use it? Sure. Fork over cash to help pay for it? Not so much. Currently with my crappy "life situation" lets call it, i cant afford to asorb all the sundry DGN costs like i could in the past, so something has had to go.

In ages past when my health was better and i was out and about town schmoozing and promoting (and encouraging others to promote) the board, and more eyeballs were on the site, donations probably would not have been an issue. But, such is life. There does seem to be a rekindled interest in helping DGN grow via that DGN Street team idea, hopefully that will help.

I only practiced massage briefly as a profession. I think i realized about 3/4ths of the way through the course that i enjoyed massage because i liked making people feel good, and i just sort of am touchy by nature. But, my brain turns to mush after not talking and doing the same motions over and over again hour in and hour out. I still enjoy the practice of massage but its more of a hobby for friends and such.

I didn't sell my soul to the U of M devil. I was at U of M... and the Corporate Devil (Owens Corning at the time, later Ford) came and took it away. I would be in my element in an acadmeic setting. I think if i had it all to do over again i'd prefer to be a teacher/professor as my preferred profession. You know if that whole willing the lotto and/or becoming a movie star gig didn't pan out.

As for the illustration, i haven't picked up a pen/pencil/light tablet in earnest for going on about 6 years. Thats another drama story in and of itself. But , i was slowly (and probably would be inclined) to take advantage of the amazing leaps of technology and get a nice pen tablet and use Painter/Adobe Illustrator / Photoshop. Its amazing how fast you can get work done that would have taken perhaps days with traditional media in an hour or two on the computer and a good pressure sensitive pen tablet.

Three hours in illustrator :

vs god knows how many hours with an airbrush or acrylic.

Just in terms of art in general im more into fine art. Illustration was just my "settling for something that might land me a job" ... which then became "ok maybe just graphic design...." then finally "ok fuck it ill just work on computers for a living, art is dead.. there is no god!!"
