Yeah, my parents were like that. Anything that wasn't "concrete" as a vocation was not to be touched (IE musician, writer, singer, etc.)

My sister & her husband down in Florida are under the mistaken impression my dad supports their acting endeavors. If they only knew...

Actually, he told this to my sister. He really thought I had a career in writing waiting for me.

But I was good at it, just not interested in it. So I never pursued it. Sometimes I feel like I disappointed him that way.

I think he feels that way about acting 'cause my sister supports herself AND her husband by working full-time as a clerical, with a good job making good money & good benefits. She worked out a flexible time-off plan that allows her to take occasional roles, which also bring in good money 'cause she's talented enough to get speaking roles & more lucrative jobs.

Meanwhile my brother in law quit work to take roles like 3rd infantryman on the left, guy in a hotdog suit, lynchmob member #18. This sticks hard in the craw of a traditionalist, 78-year old man.

It's odd, my father and his thought processes. But I kinda know where he's coming from, so I just love him for his ways.

My friend Zach, amazingly , being a MTV generation guy, generally is against spending time on "fiction" specifically and in a more general sense, Entertainment for entertainments sake overall, especially TV and Movies. Hes got a whole long theory behind it, and he has me mildly converted to some aspects of it. Although my ever-growing DVD collection will not be factored into this.

Meanwhile, most every time we have ever hung out its been going out to restaurants, random shopping places etc, all which i'd consider "entertainment".

I only don't read because I don't have the time. Maybe if there is no movie for the book (even though most movies butcher the book anyway). I stick to technical manuals and things of that nature. But I do like movies, and music that tells stories. To me music and movies are the evolved versions of poetry and books. Besides I spend most of my time on the computer reading things off the net like message boards.

I'm not stupid, just illinformed and pressed for time.
