What Does Xanex Do.....?

Ok this is not making any sense to us. Why would a doctor prescribe something that looks like its speed for a anxiety disorder?

Xanax is prescribed for anxiety. I was on that shit for a good ten years and I will never touch it again. It is very VERY addictive. It works great and fast when needed but I don't recommend it.

When I stopped taking it last October, I went through two weeks of horrible withdrawls and another 2-3 weeks of tremors. Pure hell!

Sort of like a light tranqilizer for me....

It made me not able to think strait.

I don't think I had withdrawals....If I did, it was a combo of nicotine withdrawal and xanax withdrawal....

Just hell.

Period.

It makes my mom calm...she is very overreactive and impulsive....

it has seemed to help her in that area....

I only used it for a short time and found it very helpful. Definitely not something to use recreationally, but effective when truly necessary. Last year when I had a bad few months of panic/anxiety attacks that I couldn't talk myself down from, I would take one (10mg) and within 10 minutes I could think straight again, etc. I am not sure what the actual chemicals do to your brain and how they work, I just know they worked for me for the short time I needed them. Good luck....

I had an ex who filled another person's perscription refills and took it when he didn't have anxiety ...

I'm gonna assume you mean Xanax... but... I don't keep up w/new pharmaceuticals so there may well be a Xanex on the market now. Anyway Xanax (Alprazolam) is in the same chemical family (benzodiazepines) as Valium, Librium, Klonopin, Rohypnol, Halcion, Dalmane, Ativan and others. Depending on strength and action time, benzos are generally used to treat anxiety, insomnia, ETOH withdrawal ("DTs"), muscle spasms and seizure disorders. They are also used to sedate patients before uncomfortable medical procedures. Xanax is most often used for anxiety. Benzos have a high addictive potential and like all CNS depressants can have a very dangerous synergistic effect with ETOH or other CNS depressants.

BTW, just out of curiosity- why'd you think it "looks like it's speed"?

Well if its between say... crack and xanax I'd go with the xanax.

I've been on almost all of the "big name" anxiety/depression drugs for a minimum of 3-4 months. Xanax specifically i was on for about a year it had a calming effect but was pretty mild for me. Also kinda curbed my sex drive a bit but in my case thats a positive side effect rather than a negative one lol.

Me personally i seem to be immune (at least so far) to the addictive properties of anxiety/depression drugs as I've been on so many they've virtually run out of shit to try and I'm re-cycling things i was on 4 years ago and I've got no "craving" for any of the garbage. I'd rather have some fried chicken.

I've read lots of stories about how addictive various anxiety/depression medications are. I've also read stories that says its bullshit and that gin is more addictive than this stuff is. But I've not actually "researched" any of this (like most everything we say on this board) I'm just spewing out stuff I've had experience with or heard about.

People are pretty much across the board going to slap your hand as soon as you say "for recreation" but if your going to do it anyway, I'd actually do some real research rather than take hearsay evidence from random peoples personal experiences.

Excellent advice. I used to LOVE pretty much all benzos for recreational use... but then, I was heavily into downers and had a huge tolerance for most of them. And I never became addicted to anything but opiates. But that's just me... lots of others I was around at the time had completely different experiences. And there's no way of telling what any individual's experience with any drug is going to be... so I'm not going to sit here & say "yeah it's great shit, party up!"

My advice, when in doubt on the recreational value of any drug- go to Erowid and read EVERYTHING they have about it... don't just skim to the first positive anecdotal story and say "Oh, must be all good if that person liked it." K.I.P. baby!

She's right....

I hate it, admittedly (anxiety meds) because I hate that we have created an outside coping source in general and have become so blase about it all.

I do recognize the good that can come from it but I also recognize the many different side effects: I watched Laura struggle wtih anxiety and be medicated with various drugs for a couple of years, inlcuding Xanex. It did effect her overall sense of self....yes it took some of the edge away but it also took some of "her" away and neither one of us were ok with that. The fact that she'd build a tolerance and then have to switch to a new drug further exascerbated the notion that 'something was wrong with her" as well... that was the part that I hated the most, as a husband it made me feel quite powerless to protect her.
