Dvd Player Problem (tv) - Sound, No Picture

This is really, really pissing me off.

I rented a bunch of DVD's from the library. Watched several of them fine, including "Superman Returns".

Then went to watch "The Queen". Got sound, but no picture. Figure it must be a faulty DVD. Tried Superman again, worked fine. Queen again - sound, no picture.

Then, I went and borrowed a bunch of DVD's from my sister, who is a fanatical DVD collector. I was really surprised to see she had the boxed set of "Firefly". Gleefully I went to watch it.

Sound, no picture!

So I hook up my PS2. Sound, no picture.

I hook up an old DVD player. Sound, no picture.

I try A different DVD. The Devil Wears Prada. Sound, no picture from previews. Sound and picture with the little movie that plays leading up to the disc menu displaying. Then select play. Warning against piracy - sound and picture. Movie itself - sound, no picture.

Tried A Prairie Home Companion. Sound and picture all across the board.

WTF?

Any clue? Is this possibly some glitch of copy protection?

V chip? Whats the ratings for the movies you can watch and the ones you can't? Perhaps your Tv is equiped with a V Chip.. which many are, and somehow it got turned on.. like a cat walking across a remote...

The PS2 and the other DVD player wouldn't play it, either.

And the TV isn't vchipped. I'm almost sure of it.

I've done some googling, and I think I found the answer.

The ones that won't play are "dual layer".

My DVD player won't handle them.

That's what I get for buying my players from yard sales.

However, I still have another one that, when hooked up to a different TV, did work. Originally, I hooked that up through the Line 2 input jacks on the non-working DVD player. It won't work period when going through the non-working one.

What really sucks is the TV I have in here doesn't have separate input jacks. I can't put anything through the TV without going through the other DVD player, unless I disconnect it entirely.

Sucks. The new one is surround sound.

Sigh.

Ouch. Yeah if you can't play dual layer DVDs thats gonna be pretty painful since i'd guess far more than half of all DVDs are dual layer nowadays.

But if your a DVD pirate like me, you can burn them onto single layer disks. (oops i didnt say that) :pirate:

Except for the fact that a majority of DVDs are copy-protected.

I tried to copy a couple that were due at the library, so I wouldn't have to go to the trouble of re-renting them. No go.
