Musical Talents And Backgrounds?

Probably been done on here before but I am too lazy to search right now, but who all here is musically inclined?

Spill all gruesome details, what instrument, style, schooling. The works. I am a sponge for knowledge so soak me up.

As for me I have been playing lead guitar for nearly 13 years now, all self-taught with 4 years experience in bands. I don't discriminate style at all, but it's mostly death metal/hardcore based. I dabble slightly in singing/screaming, songwriting, and a tiny tiny bit of drumming, but not nearly as long as the six-string.

So there's my beans spill yours ;)

Drums/Percussion with almost 20 years experience. Trained by a jazz musician and drilled in rudiments. My style is a jazzy/funky sorta rock. Been in 3 different bands as a drummer.

I've been singing my whole life and have had a bit of instruction by some great teachers but always in a choir setting and never anything formal. I've sang in choirs and musical plays but never with a band.

I played bass and guitar once. It was... not great.

Mostly a singer for about 25 years or so. No classical training, but I do alright.

Started learning Guitar about 6 months ago...

I've been programming Synth, and Keys for about 12 years now (Geeze, phee, has it -really- been -that- long?)

I'm also awesome at creating creshindows of screams of agony but.. wait, forget that last bit.

I sing.. I've had training but wouldn't say I'm very good (certainly not American Idol material, ha ha) ... but I can rock out at karaoke or with my friends band from time to time. :)

I played trumpet for a few years.. good ol' Jazz Band. Haven't played in a -very- long time.

Soprano soloist in choir & chorus through high school.

Singer in an all-girl band in the mid 80's. Only performances were a graduation party and special appearance at the yearly performance of the chorus we were all in at school.

Sang our school alma mater at the graduation ceremony. Of particular note because most of the school didn't know I sang and the reaction was one of the best moments in my life. I'm lucky enough to have had really cool parents who brought a tape recorder with them and taped it. I love relistening to that when I'm down.

Had voice classes in college, but nothing very one-on-one.

Picked up guitar about a year after high-school gradution. Strictly focusing on rhythm guitar, learning by copying the Beatles accompanied by the Complete Beatles songbook. Dropped down into alto voice range where I'm much more comfortable & powerful.

Throughout the late 80s and 90's, I worked with local guitarists providing vocals for demos. One told me someone was ignoring his guitar playing and kept asking, "Who's the girl singing? How can I contact her?" Apparently he never told them 'cause I never got a call.

Started writing my own songs in earnest. Hooked up with some guys to form a band in the very early 90's. Played electric rhythm guitar, sang. I was serious, they weren't. So things fell apart.

I continued to work with the guitarist however. At his urging, I started playing acoustic open-mike and coffee houses. Used to play at the Bronx Bar on Cass every weekend.

Eventually ended up entirely on my own. Still played coffee houses, still putting tons of ads in the Metro Times classifieds looking for fellow musicians to work with. Got together with another group of musicians around 1993, and once again was the only person serious enough to WORK at it. Fell apart after one gig at the Hamtramck Pub.

More solo acoustic stuff. Performed at the first Earthfest and was delighted to see skinheads moshing to my "save the earth" folk crap.

Hooked up once again with some decent musicians in the mid 90's. We went into the studio and recorded 3 decent songs. Once again, I was serious, they just wanted to fuck around.

Got really, really sick of the flakiness of Detroit-area musicians. NO lack of talent, but an incredible lack of business sense & work ethic. And learned how unsupportive the Detroit music scene can be. Put down my guitars and lost my calluses.

I met Jon in 1998. I haven't touched my 12-string since. I recently sold my effects rack. Keeping my electric guitar because it's a fake Fender that's unsellable, and I can't bring myself to give it up. And I'll NEVER give up my 12-string.

Started working in Fruityloops a few years ago and did the song I have on DGN Vol I - "Ever, Mary". A totally revamped, EBM version of a formerly acoustic song I'd done at coffee houses.

Moved on to Cubase last year. Thusfar have only had the time, energy & motivation to do one song, "Obsession (Save Your Love)" which can be heard on my Myspace page. Another formerly all-acoustic number revamped electronically.

I intend to get much more into the electronic music when things settle down in the household. I hope to eventually put out an album under a fake band name a-la NIN - just me but promote it as a band.

And that's my musical history. The end.

P.S. I played flute for a while, but got bored and traded my flute for my first guitar.

Played the flute in high school.

Want to learn how to play the drums though.

I sing, I write. I play a bit of this and that blah blah blah sorry I am tired.

I haven't had a musical lesson of any kind since I was in high school.

I'd like to think I'm not tone deaf, but I'm not entirely sure. I would very much like, when I get some free time that isn't at three in the morning, to learn to sing. I suppose I should stop smoking for that, though.

I've been a proud band geek since 4th grade, when they taught us the Recorder. 5th grade, and I started on flute, switched to Clarinet.

Did 3 years of Marching Band. I never took a choir class, so my voice is trained by yours truly. I sing, am told I'm not half bad, but there's still a lot of stuff I want to learn, and learn more voice tactics for voice-over acting.

So, about 11 years of musical training.

I'd love to learn how to play piano and guitar..... ::: Drools :::

I played rhythm guitar for a little while, till unfortunately I had to sell my gear.

Synthesizer for 3 years. Hopefully one day will start either an art-punk/no-wave band, or a goth/funk band (think early Killing Joke, Bauhaus, Brilliant, Gang of Four, Liquid Liquid).

Most excellent everyone so far, it's great to see so many musically inclined people actually take the artistic ball and run with it. It's a rare occurrence for me to meet people that actually have a passion and desire to learn anything expressive for more than aesthetic or momentary value.

I'd love to hear some peoples' work sometime, I'm always down for meetin up and rockin out :)

Many years vocal training. A few years in musical theory (much of it forgotten), and a few years in a creative and performing arts program. I also took 2 semesters keyboard training for theory purposes, but i was never any good at it. It reinforced the notion that i am a singer, and not inclined toward other instruments.

I've written songs with friends, too.

You can hear a song of mine on my myspace page.

If you must, open my blog. I've got a version of "Ave Maria" playing there that I did for my mother for Mother's Day last year.

I probably shouldn't link you to that. I'm very unhappy with it, but I didn't have good circumstances allowing for decent vocal recording/mixing and NO time allowance at all.

I'm hella good at the recorder.
