If people are really serious about getting in shape check out www.crossfit.com

The workouts at first seem really insane, but you can build up.

It's nice because there is a different workout every day and you can substitue exercises if you don't have the equipment.

Read their article about what it means to be fit. It makes the most physiological sense.

I think it really makes the most sense - true fitness isn't about being only strong or having tremendous cardio it is the balance of ten attributes:

cardio, stamina, strength, flexibility, speed, power, coordination, balance, agility, and accuracy.

if you can't handle crossfit (or don't have the equipment, which most of the members on here won't) you can try simplefit.org. just bodyweight stuff, but a great starting point!

Once upon a time, I had a gym membership, then my employer decided that she couldn't afford to send us to the gym after work anymore, so I didn't work out for a long long long long time. When we moved to oregon from alaska, we moved into an apartment complex with a gym, and I started working out most mornings before work. Then, I had company for a week, and decided after that to take a break, out of pure laziness. Since then, I've spent a lot of time sitting on my ass getting continuously more disgusted with myself.

Soooo... about three weeks ago, my partner got a job in the next city over. Previously, he was walking to his job which was just about one block from home, and I was driving to work. For the first two weeks, he would bring me to work, and I would walk the three and a half miles home. Holy hard work batman. I had just started getting into a gym routine again about three weeks prior to that, hitting the treadmill and jogging with my dog, so it wasn't an easy task, but at least I was only going one way.

Weekend before last, I got a bike! So I'm trekking the milage to and from work, morning and evening. It was a little scary at first, and it's still really fucking hard to do. So much huffing and puffing! And wow I get sore in lots of really annoying places! I know this will pay off, biking almost eight miles a day, all up and down hills the whole way. The first couple of days, I had to get off and walk my bike a few times up really tough hills, but I've got it under control now.

Obviously, I need to keep doing other things, working muscle groups other than my legs, and I will, but right now I'm always so exhausted after biking home that I'd rather give myself a little more time instead of driving myself into the ground.

I'm working though. There won't be a second car in our lives for a very long time, so the bike will have to transport me wherever I need to go until then. The only thing I'm worried about is the snow and ice, but winters in oregon are usually short and easy, so it shouldn't be too bad.

Now, I just need to buy more work friendly clothes which are also bike friendly clothes, because I hate looking slobby at work.
