No spoilers ahead - at least not in this initial post.

Treated ourselves to a very rare 1st run movie matinee today and saw this.

WOW. I loved it. Jon is more critical and "liked it".

I knew it was based on a graphic novel, but have never read it. The artist/writer had a hand in the film, working alongside Rodriguez in some capacity I don't remember.

Now THAT is how a graphic novel set to screen should look. I loved the visuals.

COOL to see Mickey Rourke onscreen, even with a ton of makeup on his face.

Quentin Tarantino was a "guest director" and you could see his stamp on it for sure.

I'm not a huge enough cinephile to get into directors too deeply - knowing the body of work or even the names of many of them just isn't important to me. But there are a few exceptions - and Rodriguez is one of them. I just love his stuff, and Jon does, too now.

As you know, I'm not a highly critical movie watcher. So I'm not one to point out flaws too much, especially when it comes to things like plot, etc. So I can't tell you whether this had any flaws. I know I liked it a lot, and highly recommend it.

Be forewarned - the violence is graphic & laid on thick. But it's very comic-book style, so it might be a touch easier to take if you're on the squeamish side. It's basically shot all black & white with some color highlighting here and there. Most of the blood is in full color, but often it's done in odd colors like white or yellow.

Oh, and it's very "film noir". I just thought it was a treat.

Had some favorite moments, but I want to keep this spoiler free for now.

Commentary on Robert Rodriguez very welcome in this thread, and not to be considered a derailment.

amazingly enough, geek that i am, ive never actually picked up any of these books. still, im generally aware of the story characters, being a comic geek. i soooo want to see this movie! glad to hear so much good about it.

Saw it Friday.

I could have done without the hardcore violence. I know why the violence and gore was included - it's based on a comic with lots of gore and violence but I thought it would have been better without it.

Anyway I thought the movie itself was really good. I have alot of dark horse comics and it's strange to see so many being turned into movies (constantine is another).

Highly reccomended if you can stomach over the top, cartoony violence.

I've heard many reviews say that THIS is the way that a comic should be transferred to the big screen.

I want to see it regardless of whether it's comic based or not. From the previews I've seen on TV, it's just going to be a good movie, in my opinion.

I wish they'd make follow-ups to this. I guess the graphic novel is actually a series of them, and this was based on 3 of them or something.

I'd LOVE to see the same crew work on more of the stories, in exactly the same style.

Heh...without giving too much away, it uses panels from the graphic novels during the opening credits, they did an excellent job framing the shots to be representative of more panels from the GN's throughout the movie, and parts of the dialouge are pretty much verbatim.

Benicio Del Torro requested a prosthetic nose so he could look more like his role. Very rarely do I hear about Hollywood handsome leading men request makeup effects to make themselves look uglier.

I'm still not sure how to feel about this movie.

The visual style rocked my socks. The comic-white glare off Kevin's glasses, along with the glowy Charlie Brown shirt was just the bee's knees.

However, the dialogue, intentional though it was, was so cheesy that even I cringed at it.

At the very least, I have to give them credit for taking a few risks, but my biggest word of advice for them would be, if they want to intentionally use B-movie or worse dialogue, make it a little more tongue-in-cheek. Even Max Payne was more tongue-in-cheek than this. A LOT more.

I was not all that impressed. Granted, the stytle of the movie was great. The content sucked monkey ass. I agree with Shade, the dialog was brought to us by the Dairy assosication. The story line was... thin. The acting seemed forced at points. Bruce looked like he was trying to get the bad taste of the words out if his mouth. I don;t care how good the presentation is, a piece of shit is still a piece of shit.

Disclaimer: Not stating any of this to try to say I'm right and someone else is wrong. Just offering further critique - my point of view to take into consideration if someone's looking for opinions.

I strongly, STRONGLY disagree with the light being cast on the dialogue & story lines.

This was based on a glorified comic book - a graphic novel. If this had been based on a nobel-prize winning novel, I would agree.

But it wasn't.

And I loved the cheesy dialogue and the delivery.

If you look at dialogue in films like this as bad, you have to view classics like Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon & any number of Cagney/Bogart/Bettie Davis/etc. movies the same way.

As for story line, I loved all of them. I loved the twists, turns, the curves, and even the cliche's.

And I thought Bruce Willis looked like he was enjoying the role.

Opinions will differ - which why I still stand by you have to judge for yourself. I've seen some of the worst critiqued films and thought they were delightful. And I've seen some majorly hyped films that left me extremely cold.
