I will aways stick to the claim that goth is a music based subculture based out of the outgrowth of the (post-)punk/anarcho/art-punk scene. People into the flirtation of darkness, beauity, impersonal feelings, and the occult and a fan of "goth" music are goths. Batcave and onward is goth. If you dress the part nowadays, don't like old school or new school goth music, and generally listen to cyber/techno/ebm/metal, you aren't a goth. You are a raver going to a cyber funeral.

I am very pure when it comes to goth. I mean, you got darkwave, which is influenced by new wave/coldwave and minimal industrial, but thats a genre that should never have been invented. Darkwave is just what bands called themselves when they knew they were a goth band, and wanted to get a record label. hahaha.

We need Mick Mercer on this forum. ho ho!

Goth ravers? they're Gravers... nyuk nyuk

Seriously, call me what you will, but i like the black clothes personally, i like metal music and some forms of techno, and no i aint no fuckin e-tard candy ass raver. I have a very antisocial personality and can come off quite as rude, arrogant, and extremely insensative.. which by coincidence is the labeled attitude of a "goth" it seems. I'm not an asshole because I'm trying to be goth, I'm an asshole because most people are fucking stupid, and i'm not going to baby someone's stupidity to make them feel special. Let darwinism do it's damn job already. And yeah my dark sense of humor... well.. when you live a fucked up life... you're humor eventually turns tasteless, offensive, dark, morbid, whatever the hell you wanna call it.

But on the inside I'm a hopeless romantic who's really looking for that girl i can spoil rotten, no really... i'm being serious heh.

I'm so goth that when I go shopping for some new black clothing, I ask if they have anything darker. :jamin

oh yeah? Well I'm so goth I just shat the spawn of satan. what now?

*EDIT* yes, this is a challenge to an "I'm so goth I..." duel... perhaps this would be best taken to a new thread or the coffee house if you wish to accept this challenge.

OK.

I like to wear black.

I go to the "Goth" clubs, but not on nights when they actually play goth music. (we have seperate nights for the "goths" and "oontzheads" out here)

Grew up on Alice Cooper and then discovered punk and techno later in life and wanted them merged. That lead me into this scene.

(punk+techno=EBM, industrial, ect... at least thats how most of it sounds to me)

I own one goth comp CD. And one CD from a band, I only have the band's CD cause it is a friend and it was the one album they got kinda oontzy on. And the comp was from when I thought I might be goth.....turns out I wasn't. I have only listened to the comp once.

I have a flat black car, but I painted it in the front yard on a hot sunny day with a case of Krylon.

I got burned to a crisp.

It has an ATV permit on it.

So not goth.

I don't like horror movies. But I love cheesy sci-fi.

Don't like "spooky" stuff.

...

So yeah not so goth.

But I do love the scene as a whole. Usually very friendly, and I can be as out there as I want.

Guess I'm more of just a guy that likes black that gets along best with the peeps in the "goth" scene.

But to the rest of the world I'll always just be another goth. ..

I am just myself

and happy with that.

I am just myself and am completely UNhappy with that.

How goth is that??

That and I prefer to wallow and mope about how hopeless things are

rather than making real change

This is especially true on the times when I come on here.

Ding ding ding!!!

So do I.

I am proof that that is not true. I can't even get a second look from any of the ladies there.

Draco, man.

It s not easy for any "type" of guy--goth,prep, hippie etc to "pick up" a random woman.

Once you're there, at the club, or wherever it is you're going---to pick up

"the ladies"-----

it all comes down to personality and confidence.

Trust me, that leaves me out too.

Bean worries about me, because,

although I have NO life,

I do live far from her and apparently "I'm hot"

:gathering: (Will someone please speak up and tell her how crazy she is)

What she doesn't get is---

I don't have a clue how to pick up women.

My "tactic" has been, in the past--

Be myself, annoy and piss off 90% of the population, and let the best of who's ever left-keep me.

That doesn't carryover too well for the club, because "wham bam thank you maam" is not in my vocabulary

I can be good if I find that one person at a party or on the boards that likes what I have to say.

Then, after countless late night chats, if she she hasn't hung herself, its pick-out-the-ring time.

If she has hung herself, of course, that further establishes my non-existent "goth-cred" so it's a win-win

The key for "unique" personalities

(yes, we are the slow-bus edition of pick up artists)

is to stop flirting at clubs and on boards like a blindfolded toddler trying to hit a piñata

at a backyard birthday party,

I've been there--it doesnt work

(only to miss by miles and play the poor me song----although that is very goth to do)

Not everyone's cut out for the whole one night stand pick up game.

And frankly, I dont think thats what youre looking for anyway.

Know your strengths.

(Hint It may not one-liners about body parts of specific goth women--

they generally don't seem to dig that--

at least not from my experience--

and DEFINITELY not from me-

that's for sure.)

Know what's special about you and

try, try, try to find that rare bird who fits and compliments you.

And do it an a type of forum (quiet party, friend group, pm) that works to accentuate those strengths.

A couple years ago, I used to appear in the sexuality forum a lot

(I started the HORNY thread, for chrissakes)

and from time to time would talk about my, um, ever so slightly above avg. endowment.

It was the only thing that turned Bean off

And here, I thought that was my only asset.

Rachel is the best thing that's ever happened to me.

Imagine if my false machismo, my insecurity-really, had kept me from finding the love of my life?

It truly pains me just to think of that.

And yet here I am, the luckiest man in the world--becaUse she could see my good heart through the bullshit.

(BTW, it's lost right now.

I'm very flaky and forgetful, so if anyone finds my good heart

please

Let me know--I'd really like it back--thank you)

Bean loves me for all my quirks not despite them.

She loves that I'm too emotional,

that I need to explain everything,

that I don't like dropping things after a fight-

that I make her open up

that I want her to tell me when she's hurt, so I know why I cause her pain

(I am the accidental dominatrix when it comes to matters of the heart--

AND

oftentimes I'm so busy causing pain I wont even hear your safe word)

She loves:

that my mixtape may have Be Bop a Lula (rockabilly), Atmosphere (goth), Mysteries of Love (80's/50's dream pop), In Rhythmus Blieden (Industrial), Something (Beatles), and Frankie Teardrop (post punk),

that I love kids,

and that I'm a big dork whose Landmark Art Theatre movie snobbery

is still no match for guilty pleasures like Top Secret and Zoolander.

All those things about you that you might think are weird or different are the EXACT things that

endear you to your soulmate.

And I mean the EXACT same things.

Dont ever worry about picking up girls on the board or the clubs.

Be proud to say you've gone decades without the clap.

I am.

(Although I do love those classic commercials where the old lady with arthritis raises her hands and she

...Wait, that's the Clapper, never mind)

Focus on making friends, because in the end, that's what you're going to want in a partner.

And by all means, do it at the places that are conducive for you and that

highlight your ability to make a connection with that special person.

And try to minimize random flirtations at people you dont know that well, because to a woman who may be interested in you,

it could be intimidating

She may think:

you're a player,

or worse a lech,

and it might even make the female subject of said flirtation feel a little creeped out.

And then if you follow it up with a putdown, it just looks unatttractive.

Because we're all insecure in some ways,

and we want someone who makes us feel worthwhile.

That can be a BIG turn on for the ladies. (or gentleman)

But it's hard to do that for someone else when we act as a one-man band at the all-night pity party.

Because what you and so many on here are looking for is,

someone who loves us for us,

someone who doesnt make us feel stupid--esp. when we're most vulnerable,

and finally

someone who is there for us when we need them the most--

at times when most of our friends conveniently get "too busy"

until we become the fun friend again---

who'll join them for drinks at the club

You know

Every post, every opinion, every thing Bean tells me, makes me realize how lucky I am to have her in my life.

And I never would've found it if I just went to City Club and said "rowwrr, you're smokin"

I dont know the wild, outgoing, hard drinking, hard living, Bean Water some of you have PMed me about.

Thank g-d.

I know without even meeting "her,"

I prefer the quiet, empathetic, strong, opinionated, intelligent, funny, loving Rachel much better.

You'll find yours too, Draco.

You just have to stop looking at places that are listed on the watch list for the CDC.

And then just let the real you come out.

F&%$ the Pick Up Artist.

(Have you seen that dumbass show??)

He looks part punk, part goth, part boy band, and yet somehow

ALL Douchebag

I would try being yourself, minus the leering innuendos and self deprecations

(Those were my two surefire tricks as well.

They seem to make sense at the time, but amazingly, they never work)

Instead just be you,

the you:

before schoolmates questioned it,

before strict workplaces suppressed it,

before your ex undermined it,

before family/personal health concerns caused you to neglect it.

Be the you that you feel,

your beliefs,

your way of being,

your likes/dislikes,

because as long as they conform to the legal statutes of your muncipality, state of MI, and US govt,

(that is important, of course)

they are PERFECT.

Every last one of them.

They absolutely are.

Because they're yours and the right person is going to see that and cherish it,

IF you let them.

(And everyone else can go f$%^ themselves)

Become a friend and a real person, without forcing it or second guessing yourself,

and just watch as the other pieces to your puzzle fall into place.

Wow I really came on thick there.

Sorry.

I had some bad Mexican last night and had this dream I was Dr Phil.

That or Dr Dre.

I cant remember.

Maybe it was Ben Folds acting like Dr Dre on Dr Phils show.

Anyway, I'm not a licensed therapist, so take it with a grain of salt,

or metamucil,

or better yet,

one of those whole grain wheat bread loaves,

you know right after they come out of the oven at the bakery,

and you're first in line,

and you see it from across the counter, and you cant wait

so you slowly open it up,

gently,

like separating a lovely woman's legs before looking into her eyes to make love,

and you take in the smell of the bread,

mmmmmmmm,

and then you have to put it back in the bag,

because you havent paid

and there are five people in back of you--

not including the two year old that some haggard young housewife is holding-- back to chest---

so her little brat is in the air,

and he's kicking you in the small of your back

and the severity is increasing

and your back's starting to welt,

and you're not sure whether to turn around and ask the young lady to discipline him

or just stand there and wait for the pain to become pleasurable,

but then that makes you question what kind of person you'd be,

so you decide to just pay for your bread and go home.

What is this thread about again??

Oh yeah---

I consider myself an eclectic mix of hard rocker/hippie/goth/folk/punk/biker/etc. etc. etc.

I love goth girls, I think they are amazingly beautiful.... and the whole goth culture had drawn me ever since it started.... I started going to City Club about 12 years ago, and try to get there as often as I can.... after my divorce I was full of angst, anger, and got into groups like Bauhaus, Skinny Puppy, Nine Inch Nails, and all forms of music that expressed the emotion I was feeling... and for the most part still do.

People are always surprised at my tastes and I never understood that, it isnt like we are all in some sort of exclusive club.

All forms of expression are valid to me.... why is it thought strange when someone like me likes them? I like to think of goth people as "alternative"....more than anything else... but I think that is just me.

We all have our own way of seeing the world, and what is in it.... and i think that is ok. In an age where diversity isn't tolerated, the diverse are the only ones who are truly free. You are a unique bunch of people, and I am honored to be among you.

No offense, but you sir are of too high a caliber for this board.

I tried to tell this to Steven months ago, but if you persist to stay in this land of malcontents and freaks,

don't say you're honored for coming here.

Not when you enter DGN in such a dignified manner, and then proceed to respectfully raise the bar of discourse above where it was sitting,

which was that of a limbo stick in the final round of Brucie's Bloomfield Hills Bar Mitzvah Bash

L'chaim, Savageminstrel! It's good to have you here.

I really get uneasy when the word goth gets tossed around because MOST people nowadays don't know/care what it is - just say it. People think its metal, people think its EBM, its all bullshit. I prefer being called a...

Monochromatic Post-Punk Anarcho Art-Fag.

Oooh I love that.

I always tell people about this obscure punk album Suicide

(I mentioned its centerpiece Frankie Teardrop above--though my favorite is probably Cheree.)

Now if they ask what it is, I can explain

"It's music for Monochromatic Post-Punk Anarcho Art-Fags."

You're awesome.

Thank you.

Honestly, I can understand breaking things up into a few groups for easier manageability and description purposes. The problem is, with most of those labels you just spouted, I have no idea whatsoever what they mean. Why do things have to always get sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-categorized, to the point where no one understands that the terms are even supposed to mean?

When you hear "goth", you have a general image in your head, and general idea of the type of music. When you hear punk, raver, emo, etc, once more you get a general image of the look and music of that "subculture". But post-rock? Coldwave? Unless you are SUPER into music (i.e. music nazi [no offense!]) from my experience no one knows what exactly it is.

But I'd like to think DGN attracts a more thoughtful, overall well-rounded type of person than many boards/groups.

First and foremost, I'd rather be tagged an intellectual. One of the things I've noticed with a lot of people I've met is that they bash their intelligence to a stifling point and they refuse to take on a title like that, it's sad. I'm really satisfied that I've learned to question things; no amount of misery from outside sources compares to knowing I've outsmarted sheepish ideals that someone wanted me to follow so they could sustain their inferiority complex, which is to me, a lack of sufficient experiences that causes inability to connect with any words of value. People are terrified of awareness and the massive change it would lead to.

I really have to say there's been times I've been sick of all the alternative forms of fashion. Then I dislike most color even more, and have no want to walk around naked.. so I go with mostly black. There are people who'd give me somewhat nasty stares or comments for my long hair and my clothes, but I'm at a point where I know my experience differs from them and my conditions of extremity are different from other people. Rather than entertain people with "I'm here look at me," I have learned to stare back which is basically saying, "Yeah.. these are fucking clothes. Turn your t.v. off tonight and try reading a book."

The best way for me to put it is that I associate strongly with the gothic subculture and the things influenced by it. I've always seen stereotypes to be used socially in a kind of jest. People have a lot of passion for aesthetic things they live by, and a person's personal perception of the 'goth' aesthetic is always under attack if they have equally passionate people with different standards and ideas of what makes up 'goth' aesthetic. So basically I'm tip-toeing around the question because both yes and no for any label spread across time is kind of insufficient, but at least I kept up with my first sentence.

P.S.

Eternal that post rocked, but it was not long enough.
