The sound system is also my biggest gripe.... I would love my favorite club to also have the best sound.... but right now Necto's definitly wins for sound...

Quoting myself:

I think most people who complain about the sound system either have a finely tuned ear or work with sound systems themselves in some capacity, either soundmen/women or Dj's, etc.

I like a good sounding car stereo. But I've never had a problem with the sound at CC.

Thusfar, again, the only people I see saying things like above are those who work in sound themselves.

Something else that might bear polling the customers.

Yeah, really. I remember going to CC in 1990 / 1991 or so, and the most "gothy" stuff I remember being played was Depeche Mode. And maybe the Cure or something. Heh.

People, is it THAT hard to tolerate a little old mixed with the new?

I enjoy listening to new Combichrist, but for pity's sake, what about old Puppy? Flock of Seagulls? Orgy? Apop? KMFDM? Dude, what the hell ever happened to Christfuck by Wumpscut?!

I want a better mix of the old versus the new. I dont care if the DJ is unable to beat-match Siouxsie to Suicide Commando, I just want to hear VAH-REYE-EH-TEE

agreed.

When I go to CC like I did on the 4th, I only heard 2 songs that I knew. mind you, I only make it out there once in a blue moon and I dont have the old CC playlists on my itunes but I was really bummed. I danced to two and a half songs the whole night and I drove 2 hours to get there.

I like new stuff but I definitely love the old stuff more. when it's mixed, that's super- but when I only hear 2 songs the whole night? that's rough.

If you were there on the 4th you must've heard Wumpscut - Christfuck because I'm pretty sure they played it that night. Sucks to be him. He missed out. lol j/k

Complaints?

"too obscure"

"not obscure enough"

"too much variety"

"not enough variety"

"too hard/soft"

"not hard/soft enough"

"too much new stuff/not enough old stuff"

"too much old stuff/not enough new stuff"

"I can't dance to this"

"You don't play enough requests"

"I like the music, I just hate you"

"My band rocks and you wont play my stuff! Why not???"

"The sound system sucks" (this the DJ pretty much has no control over but is still a valid complaint)

Have I missed anything here? If so please feel free to add to the list.

If there is anything I've learned thus far DJ'ing its that you can't please everyone, and the most you can hope for is the majority likes what you play.

hahahahahahahaha exactly.

i don't work in sound myself, i'm an acoustic performer-type... but still i'm aware it's horrible. =(

and mr. saint... =) if you're down with the whole "generalized request" thing, i personally would wanna hear some more swooshy pretty ambient stuff mixed in among the oontz oontz stuff.

First off: I have not been to City Club... for a while, to put it simply. Why? The music seriously sucks. That's being as nice about it as I can be without being dishonest.

Now, to be fair, a lot has probably changed, and if Marc is DJing regularly, there is a strong possibility things have improved. What I felt that club has needed is at least one DJ that has the Nuts to play a lot of new, more obscure material crossed with the Skillz to keep the crowd reasonably happy while also diversifying the tastes of the AUDIENCE. See, people like what they like, but a good DJ can introduce new music in a way that, over time, the audience's tastes will widen and they will even look forward to going to the club to hear new shit, versus going there to hear the shit they already are familiar with. It is a hard, up hill battle, and not everyone will be pleased all of the time. However, if you have a DJ that is very well informed on current music and nationwide (or international) trends, as well as the history of these trends and is able to slowly widen the type of music played, then that DJ can make a very diverse and well educated audience. However, I sympathize with Marc or any other club that has to deal with the City Club audience that has, over the years, been consistently fed set lists of the most non-dynamic music I have ever heard. I don't envy the job of diversifying the tastes of the City Club crowd.

However, my biggest gripe with City Club has always been... you know... that it is possible to dance to beats other than the Four To The Floor 00ntz beat! I realize that is the easiest beat for uncoordinated people to dance to, but that is not a legitimate reason for it to be the only thing played. I mean, trance, EBM, house, etc, is all these Doof/Doof/Doof/Doof beats, and it is never ending and it hurts my brain hearing it all they time. If I were to go back to City Club and hear a set composed 75% or more of that stuff, it would probably keep me from going there ever again with the possible exception of going there for the occasional laugh. The fact that "harsher EBM, high BPM" and "melodic VNV type stuff, slighly lower BPM" seems to be the dichotomy of music played is sad, since that isn't any sort of variety at all! And not that I do not like the 00ntz music. I do! I like a lot of it! It is simply the over saturation of it that I find appalling.

Do they still play that Skold KMFDM song "Anarchy" every night? They used to play the ass out of that song, it was ridiculous. Same with that Covenant "Dead Stars" song. I was sure they were going to start playing both of them multiple times per night. Eventually, hearing those songs made me feel like Alex in a Clockwork Orange post-treatment when he heard the 9th, and wanted to snuff it.

With that said, if a club night ever appeared around here where the DJs consistently played good, new and obscure music of various styles and genres, I'd be there every weekend, at least.

Exactly. Places i hang out or have worked/dj'd at prove you don't need electronics to move on the dancefloor.

Regarding the first line, my friend Brian/DJ Bwahaha wrote this

"Definitions for Scene newbies

DJ: Alcholic with a large music collection. Downloads all his music from the internet and claims this supports the bands he's ripping off. Is insulted when Scenesters don't dance to his brilliant mixes, but has nothing but contempt for their musical tastes. Won't play a local band in his set unless they've signed to Metropolis and headlined in Germany.

Scenesters: The 10% of teh scene who aren't either DJs (70%) or musicians (20%). Won't attend a concert featuring local bands that's 15 minutes away from their house unless the band is signed to Metropolis and headlined in Germany. Thinks all DJs should be fired and replaced with an iPod full of VNV, Apop, and Covenant tracks on shuffle. Clubs are for drinking, talking to friends, and getting laid anyway.

Musician: Content provider. Complains that DJs never play their music, but won't comprise Artistic Integrity to impress some soulless DJ. So what if it clears the dance floor? Clubgoers and DJs suck anyway! Career goal: to get signed by Metropolis and headline in Germany.

Teh Scene: The thing we rant about when somebody screws us over, or doesn't support our project (which is the same thing as screwing us over.)

But hey, at least I'm not bitter. :)"

Regarding the second, someone said on the DIAG one time that they were made out of "mammoth hide, mud, and sticks". It's too bad that DJ's that don't know how to use the equipment properly keep blowing it (especially when they get drunk and think it's not loud enough).

City Club Had..good music at one time..seems like the DJ last Saturday had weird intro music going..or something sounded like I was a movie..not sure what he trying to do. Then when spined his music he has I have say this much it seems like fallowing the same play list over and over week after week..there plenty other Goth artists need be played. Any rembers when used bring goth bands in there..I haven't seen that for ages..I miss that so much...they need bring that back.

What other cities are you refering to? I go pretty often to the clubs in Chicago which play pretty much the same as here. Toronto I go to about once a year and they are pretty much on par with Detroit. Toledo same, Cleavland, (although I haven't been there in a few years), was always the same. Bowling Green, same..

personally i like almost anything... anything that isnt overplayed...i want to hear different stuff week in and week out..sure you can have the paddings you need but if i dont hear anything different constantly i get way bored with it ive had this discussion with mr noble at necto about it when he dj'd there a few weeks ago and his reasoning of heavily padding new songs with staples makes sense however week in and week out i do not want to hear the same damn song Almost three days in a row if your gonna play that same band fine just dont pick the same damn song throw something completly off the wall in there.....unlike somepeople i know i cannot listen to dead enough for life 3 days almost in a row week in and out...its uber boring yaknow?(just an example of one of the many songs by bands that you could play different stuff by)

as for style i dont really care

be it front 242, apoptygma berzerk,KMFDM<ESPECIALLY,covenant, ministry, combichrist, fictional and one, sisters of mercy, tkk, throw some different tracks out there

the problem with this is that if you're playing a deep cut by a band it's essentially the same as playing a brand new track. obviously nothing wrong with digging into an album to play a track, but as a DJ you'd (i'd) rather try to break new stuff.

a potentially dumb question for you guys: if CC is so bad, why don't you go other places? monday at necto, wednesday at luna ( pleasure kitten & void6 are fantastic),etc. you use to have fridays at luna with chris rohn, who had a great play list every week. not enough people supported it, so that's done now unfortunately.

You do bring up a good point, and to try answering this question, I think the biggest reason for this is habbit. None of these places have been around as long as CC, or have been souly dedicated to the goth scene and the goth scene only like city club has. Other reasons I belive would be location, as Necto is way too far away for most people, as example. however when I go to necto, it's still a very lively place, it's simply the goth club for it's reigon, CC has Detroit, and Necto has Ann Arbor. As for some of the other clubs around this area, it's also the days they throw the goth theme, most people have work the next day, or are working that day or night. Time is a critical element. I'd honestly pick the Luna as my favorite place to go. However, when I was in the detroit area, what kept me from going there regulary is it was on weekdays, not the weekend. If it was gothed out and thumpin on a friday or saturday, then it would be so convenient to go to, but wednesday nights are just crap nights to pull it on. As long as city club has it's door open EVERY saturday night, it really looks as if none of the other clubs could ever manage to stay in competition with them as people always automatticly assume city club is the hot spot for saturdays, and saturdays are the day to go clubbing.

this statement sums everything up in a nut shell. CC plays what they play because it makes Mike money. If it didn't it would fail. Which is also why it's the longest running club night in detroit. It morphs and changes with what the majority of people showing up there want.

What I think most of us music snobs forget is that the DJ's have a job to do, and that's fill the dance floor. If combichrist is what fills the floor than so be it, I may not like it, but that's the way it is. Why doesn't mike fix the sound? he doesn't have to people still show up. Why doesn't he clean the floors? he doesn't have to. Things will only change if he starts not making money. It's buisness, it has nothing to do with "the scene".

Quoted for truth. It's why I've been boycotting the place for the past two years. I'll go back when it's... ok enough ranting about why it sucks.

The reason that people go there is because they've been trained to out of habit. The largest reason is because people think it's the cornerstone of the underground scene here in Detroit. Second to that would be the hours because even though the drinking stops at 2:00 AM the party goes till 4:30 AM and most people don't want to go home at two. Third is dancefloor size, closest to that is Necto and The Ritz (which is about half the size of it I'd say).

Honestly all we are is just a bunch of dollar signs to Mike and if we stopped going he'd act to fix the place up. He's one of the cheapest bar owners (and landlords) in town. The only money I think he pays out is to restock liquer and pay off the city inspector so they don't condemn the building.

well the last time i was at CC both Chris Rohn and Riccer where DJ'ing with bringing in some new DJ's... but that was about 4 years ago. And back then I perfered Friday nights to Saturday nights because there was a differnece in the music that was played. Fridays where more of the metal side of the scene and Saturday was more of the techno side. BUt back then you could request Anarachy by KMFDM, or Creature of Masquerade by Jaw, or Another World by BeBorn Beaton and it would be played. And you would even have the Crushshadow played, and a few other bands that have been named that people would like to be played.

But having not been in michingan in 3 years and away from CC in 4 years I have no idea what music is played anymore. I did like some of the new stuff that was being brought in, but alot of times the new new stuff was played early from betweeen like 10pm and midnight and trickeled in later in the night in the mix of other songs to give people a break to get something to drink or to go to the bathroom and usually somehting popular was playeed at 2:30 and something slightly less popular was played around 2:40 to help with the beer clean up run. but those are my memeories of CC. I went to luna once, and it was ok. I also been to some of the other goth nights but there have been new clubs popping up since I got out the scene of going to the clubs everynight. I used to be a CC all nighter by arriving before midnight and leaving at 4:30. .

So I can't complain about the new dj's and hte new music since I haven't been there in 4 years.

seriously....I've only been to CC twice...and there are two reasons why I never went back.

A: I could psycho-analyze the entire room in a matter of minutes....lots of "wannabes" and "emo-kids"...not a single unique person among them...everyone kept to their own kind...people looked like groups of clones. ...and thats not why I go to parties....if I wanted to see that for an entire night, I would go find an all night HT.

B: all the music sounded EXACTLY the same...some sorry little pathetic person whining on about this or that....or another, un-imaginative techno beat. I'm not a robot....neither of those interests me.

Of course, it's been like 3 years ago...but from what I heard, people have been changing locations, running off to Necto, Luna, or any other place they can find.

Take it how you want it, but thats a HUGE sign to change the way things are currently happening.
