Joey Deadcat Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 Hell, I just stick to places that have DJ SPAG, Human Fly, Del Villareal(The Aztec Werewolf), Mugshot,Lacey, or Sarah and Elisa spinning. As far as dark music goes, miss Brian Necro, Adam Cadaver, Brian The Brain, and Tim Tiki. Those were the days! If I'm up at CC these days it's just for the camraderie with some old faces. Lookin' forward to your Elbow Room gig, Justin!
phee Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 seriously....I've only been to CC twice...and there are two reasons why I never went back. A: I could psycho-analyze the entire room in a matter of minutes....lots of "wannabes" and "emo-kids"...not a single unique person among them...everyone kept to their own kind...people looked like groups of clones. ...and thats not why I go to parties....if I wanted to see that for an entire night, I would go find an all night HT. B: all the music sounded EXACTLY the same...some sorry little pathetic person whining on about this or that....or another, un-imaginative techno beat. I'm not a robot....neither of those interests me. Of course, it's been like 3 years ago...but from what I heard, people have been changing locations, running off to Necto, Luna, or any other place they can find. Take it how you want it, but thats a HUGE sign to change the way things are currently happening. Hey...I am a wanna be!!! A nightclub exists for the purpose of giving us a place to go!!! I really can't complain about reason A... honestly there would be no such thing as a subculture nightlife with out the armies of wannabees going and drinking and dancing to the repetative music... I have been a wannabee going to CC since I was 17, and now I am a wannabee going to CC at the age of 30.... If I ever stop being a wannabee and actually turn into a "unique person" please let me know... On a side note, what is the purpose of declaring others "posers" or "wannabee's"? I think it speaks more about the person making the accusation then the people they are refering to...
Daniel Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 On a side note, what is the purpose of declaring others "posers" or "wannabee's"? I think it speaks more about the person making the accusation then the people they are refering to... I'm sure this is a total derailment of the OT, but I want to point out that while I almost always agree with you (I hate people using the term poser), there is this very tiny percentage of the time when the accusation of "poser" or "wannabee" is absolutely warranted and justified. And I think GodfallenPromos's post is one of those rare instances. To answer your questions directly: what is the purpose of declaring others posers? The same purpose in describing anything, really. To use language to demonstrate to another person a particular situation as you see. In this case, it is using vivid and highly opinionated terms for poignancy. /end thread derail.
CatsEyeOfTheWiccan Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 CC, subject.. I would like not having same CD Playlist..on shuffle every time I go. Espcialy tons other gothic electrica/IDM/Alterntive artists put on plenty new albums this year and last year. I miss them having bands play..but the mostly I would love see at cc, actualy feel...it cooler in basment instead of a dutch oven. I do dress comfortable in a skirt when I go..I don't need be driping in swet and not even dancing that is pretty bad. -CatsEye
Onyx Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 If I'm up at CC these days it's just for the camraderie with some old faces. That's really the only reason why I go anymore, when I do. It's not the music and definitely not the *cough* atmosphere or the nightmare that awaits when one must visit the CC bathroom. It's too damn uncomfortably hot or cold or humid or dirty to go for any other reason than the possibility to see a few friends.
Guest GodfallenPromos Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 I miss them having bands play. whats really bad...is that they have a decent area that could qualify for a stage...and it would be OVERLY easy for me to put bands in there...from locals to even Psyclon 9...which we all know would go over HUGE...but alas....everyone is left with one of the worlds largest indoor furnaces.... I think that CC could be such a huge part of the music scene that it's almost sad to see that much space wasted.
Darus313 Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 OK, first of all Troy took it upon himself to make this a new thread off of any existing post (http://www.detroitgothic.net/t17392.html) so now it sorta kinda looks like I'm the one who started a post, but let it be known it was someone else mentioning "lousy setlist" and not me for the 1 zillionth time pleading for more acceptance of new music played at City Club. no worries it may get more attention and intelligent discussion here in a seperate post than it would hidden behind the other one. Any post that starts with "Back in the Day" should have an automatic delete function. Back in the day... walked uphill to City Club, both ways... barefoot in the snow! Ignoring or being innovative? It's all perspective - you can look at that 1 DJ as being the lone soul who actually takes the risk to try to introduce new stuff, get it worked into constant rotation perhaps and show that there is progression to be had in this scene. Of course the DJ doesn't have to be elitist about this and a good DJ should realize that the NEW can and should mix with the old classics, one genre with the next. And if it were not for ANY DJ taking risk the patrons would be stuck in that "back in the day" 1987, 1997 rut. There are great classics out there but there's also a flood of new material being released constantly from artist who are going to be the next new genre leaders and lifeblood ('ello Rotersand). Any DJ needs to be able to hear a song and realize it’s potential. I know one DJ who would play Combichrist long before any other DJ in town. Pennies, bolts, empty water bottles, deathe threats (seriously) would be thrown at him but he kept playing them and now look - Combichrist is CONSTANTLY on the request sheets. Because that DJ took the risk and got Combichrist to work, that DJ will continue to try to have the same success with new artist. So are DJ's supposed to be on autopilot? Or maybe they can think for themselves and challenge the patrons occassionally with something new? Rhetorical questions... BOTTOM LINE IS THIS - Can't please everybody all the time. It's MUSIC people - at most 5 minutes of something you might either really enjoy or really HATE. Not the end of the world like some girl last night thought just because she didn't hear her song... Christ almighty, like you've forgotten how Out Out's "Admire the Question" sounds. A little open-mindedness is all that's asked. One just might discover a track/band in there that is awesome. I'd like to think all the CC DJ's offer enough variety in a night. It's very tough because the club has been there for 19+ years and think of the catalog of music that has been played in that time and then there's also the need to move forward musically as well... thoughts? Sure DJ'ing is a business especially if your a wedding dj. But the good and successful CLUB dj's don't always view it as strictly business. That's such a narrow perspective to have on it. I have DJ friends from L.A. to New York to London who weekly pack their clubs and are constantly challenging their patrons by giving them something new, unexpected and NOT playing the same overplayed selections. DJ's who are CONSTANTLY concerned with pleasing their patrons ALL THE TIME (let's call them request DJ's) should step aside and be REPLACED BY JUKEBOXES. Reading a crowd is essential sure but "needing" to play ONLY what patrons want to hear is degrading to any DJ who should have the skill and foresight to also let their audience hear the overwhelming volume of what's out there. Again strategically mix the new in with the old for a variety and that is a winning combination. anyways, Troy and I certainly don't see eye to eye on that "DJ'ing is a business" claim I'm sure. As someone who has DJ'ed college radio, internet radio, clubs for 10+ years, travelled all over the US dj'ing and spun festivals in the U.K. (twice) - I just wanted to bring my very broad knowledge and experiences into light. I mean no ill-will or dis-respect to Troy. TO EVERYONE: Hope I'm not coming off as a dick or elitist here or worse. Really appreciate the open discussion on this even if the music at City Club has been discussed to death for years upon years. Personally I grow tired very quickly with things (art, books, food) therefore I embrace change pretty quickly and that spills over into DJ'ing naturally. There's times when the music complaints are justified and yeah I DO take it ALL into consideration, I love the discussion on it all even if it irritates me sometimes. Likewise the discussion motivates me as a DJ to challenge you girls and guys a bit and will do so. Think of it like this - What if every painter out there painted the exact same thing, what if every write wrote the exact same story? I digress... ALWAYS appreciate the support and those with open minds. and DEATHKEY! Did some say DEATHKEY... D
DJ Saint Posted August 26, 2007 Author Posted August 26, 2007 whats really bad...is that they have a decent area that could qualify for a stage...and it would be OVERLY easy for me to put bands in there...from locals to even Psyclon 9...which we all know would go over HUGE...but alas....everyone is left with one of the worlds largest indoor furnaces.... I think that CC could be such a huge part of the music scene that it's almost sad to see that much space wasted. Putting on a concert at City Club is NOT an OVERLY easy task to accomplish. Having been one of the very few local bands to have performed there and also having set up/run several shows there - Covenant/Melotron/Backspace as well as Wolfsheim in particular - the space holds several limitations for live performances. One of the biggest is that the space is not geared towards live performances at all. Sure it's a nice big room but Everything needed to make that place sound and look decent must be trucked in. Nothing can be hung from the ceilings due to lack of structural support. You do realize the club is not on street level - would you know how and where to load in equipment? Our small crew ended up carrying in many pieces of equipment up several flights of stairs, wheeled in endless road cases as far as they could and then lifted the rest... There's no freight elevator to make things easier and yeah a 400lb mixing console, intelligent lighting rigs and miles of cable are NEVER easy to move. Another drawback is the power source for the club. For both the above mentioned shows there were serious bouts with power to the point where the fuse box would have made Clark W. Griswold drool with envy. At one point there were sparks popping out of it I recall. That Wolfsheim show almost required generators - but you can't have a generator in an open room such as that. The stage is not really a "stage" - for many bands it's much too small. In order for bands to use it it must be partially deconstructed (hand rails to come off, stairs built, etc...) and then a new section of it actually rebuilt. And with gear, racks, lighting rigs and more up there it's not the sturdiest stage whatsoever. Also take into consideration how old the building is - half the outlet plugs in the ballroom don't even work. The room isn't soundproof. If theres already complaints from just friday and saturday dance nights think of the complaints a LOUDER concert would bring. Ever see one of the ceiling tiles fall on just a regular dance night? The buildings far from code. There are no dressing rooms nor backstage area. Not a big deal maybe for some bands, but then again some artist require that. additional security has to be hired in for the night... So there's those constrictions and then their is Mr. Higgins who is a bit of a hard-sell when it comes to convincing him that live performances are a good idea. Heh - I think he even realizes that the space is less than adequate for live performances. Yeah I'd love to see City grow from simply a dance club to become a suitable live venue for 'our' music but it would take a lot of refurbishing to make it worthwhile for any promoter to work there without major hangups, setbacks and limitations. If you care more about the music then the money you're better off booking bands in venues more geard towards hosting shows (St. Andrews, Harpos, Ritz, Smalls, Alvins) places that may also sound better and give your audience a better show. You'd ceretainly end up spending a ton of money just prepping the place for a show.

headlessgoth Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 i really miss the old days this is just my thoughts dont mean to offend anyone. when i go to cc it seems like they (dj's) forgot all about what made cc great the dark goth dance music which made me fall in love with the scene to begin with. now i get on the dance floor and i feel lost i like it better in the dgn corner. i think chris rohn should have a shot on saturday nights for a while. im not trying to promote or dis anyone. but cr plays the music i really enjoy but he spins at a club that i really dislike for a variety of reasons that i dont want to get into
Chris Rohn Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 i think chris rohn should have a shot on saturday nights To make a long story short, the days of my dj'ing at city club are long over.
Scary Guy Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 To make a long story short, the days of my dj'ing at city club are long over. Hey Chris, got any TECHNO? Such bullshit and another good reason I hate the place. They have a great track record for fucking over employees.
darkboi13 Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 come to the 1st night of censor this coming thursday =)on the cc note... my only issue with city club is the sound system. has the sound always been that bad in there? i just moved back to detroit 2 weeks a go, so i am unaware of the sound systems history. The sound system has always been horrible there. I think people tend to go more out to cc due to its charm. HAHA!
DJDeadbeat Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 They need to rename it the Liedernacht and go back to being a goth club...(and related genres).
Scary Guy Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 They need to rename it the Liedernacht and go back to being a goth club...(and related genres). I think there is a better chance of... anything else you can possibly think of happening first. At least until it gets new management.
Hellion Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 Like I said before needs more variety, way more.
DJ Saint Posted August 29, 2007 Author Posted August 29, 2007 OK EVERYONE! ENOUGH ALREADY!!! I think everyone has made their points a few times now and even gotten off subject. HEY ADMINS - LOCK THE POST! DEATHKEY
