Singapore Airlines will be rolling out the A380 superjumbo on October 26th, and a surprise awaits in the seat of every passenger: their personal Linux PC, running Red Hat. In addition to running the in-flight entertainment, passengers can also use a full copy of StarOffice, and there's a USB slot for importing/exporting documents or plugging in your own keyboard/mouse. Screen size is 10.6" (1280x768) in economy, 15.4" in business and a whopping 23" in first class (along with free noise-canceling headphones). The system is already available on current B777-300ER planes and will also be outfitted on the upcoming B787 Dreamliners.

Gee, I wonder how much THAT'S gonna cost for a plane ticket? Sound's like you have to have some bucks for that flight.

not so.

the idea is to reduce costs by increasing the deck capacity, kind of like a normal service buss and a london double decker. both cost the same though the double decker, as long has the capacity decently filled is better value and more profit to run.

just like the 747 did to air travel, this wil;l reduce costs further.

it seems odd that the yanks built planes for value (boing 747 series) and us european built speed (concorde) and now roles are reversed. concorde was massively expensive and needed to be filled to capacity to run with a profit margin, especialy due to high maintanance.

now boing is doing a low capacity supersonic. i think the failings of concorde and the market domination of boing should have made them think seriosly about it.
