Maybe the vigilantes who roamed the night of one author's world, the tortured souls who brought order to their strange worlds in ways that others might not have seen as quite so nice?

I'm surprised it took THAT long for someone to say it. It's the first thing that comes to mind when I think tortured hero. Although all heroes are tortured technically.

Doctor Who from the new series (believe me, they've made him tortured, never lonely, but always alone).

The Punisher, Hellboy, Wolverine, and Spawn are all good ones, but i only know of them from the movies.

Vampire Hunter D, Spike (from Cowboy Bebop), Roger Smith (Big O)
