Fierce Critter Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 It's for sale on eBay for $49 start bid. High shipping 'cause it's from China: Thing is, though, A woman in the next city over is selling the exact same dress at a yard sale - in my size. Actually, bigger than my size, so it's got room for fitting. But she's charging $200. (I actually was surprised to find it - I was looking gowns up on eBay to see what kind of prices gowns go for, and there it was.) I wonder if I show her the eBay ad if she'd give it to me for the eBay price...
creatureofthenyte Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Yeah, definitely would look hot on you. Go with the one that lady over in the next town is sellin, with all the trouble with chinese imports these days, you'd be better off with that next-town-over lady's dress, even if you have to pay extra for it, its better to be safe then sorry. You wouldn't want to buy the chinese one for the lower price and then wind up havin it the dress disinigrate in the washing machine ya know. All the trouble with lead paint in toys from china.. There may not be a corralation, but I don't think it'd be too far fetched to think of it that way.
Fierce Critter Posted September 7, 2007 Author Posted September 7, 2007 Yeah, but I ain't got $200 right now. Won't for the next month actually. I think I'll go see her tomorrow. Give her my phone number and maybe a printout of the eBay ad and tell her if she doesn't get her $200, would she sell it to me for like $80 or something. God, will I ever have an occasion to wear such a thing, though? I'm always bummed because I go to thrift stores and yard sales a LOT. And I see formal gowns for sale all the time. But never before the other day did I see any in plus sizes. And damn if it's not my favorite color combination, too - I wear black & red so much I'm becoming a tedious cliche'. :D She also had this gorgeous, poufy number in layers and layers of tulle and beads. But it was a shade of light blue that I just wouldn't wear, and she wanted $300 for it. It was nice to see gowns in my size finally, however.

It'd be less then what she was askin, but maybe the fact that she could make the sale " right now" might sway things your way, I hope it works out.
TrixieGothGirl Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 I want that dress. Seriously though, that is a very beautiful dress. I think it would look great on ya hon.
mallochai Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 I just don't understand people who sells things for a lot of money at garage sales. If it's worth so much, sell it to a consignment store, not off your front yard.
Medea Posted September 8, 2007 Posted September 8, 2007 That dress is absolutely beautiful. And honestly, who said you need an occasion? I've worn formal dresses to City Club before.
Nienna Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 New Years isn't so far away. That is stunning. I can see you in that with dark red and black makeup and a messy updo.
Fierce Critter Posted September 9, 2007 Author Posted September 9, 2007 Sigh. I wonder if I show up on her doorstep with all of $50 in my hand, would she just let me have it. I have her address from the advertisement for her sale. I can always just go there on Thursday when I'll have cash and try.
Lillylu29 Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 she's probley trying to make a quick buck off the teens.... its home coming season and the girls think about the proms to...... but go for it it never hurts to ask....
sass_in_the_pants Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 That's not a bad idea, FC. Cash in hand is hard to refuse.
Head Wreck Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 i buy a lot of stuff from hong kong and china and never found thier shipping that bad tbh
Kit Kat P Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 My post left, try for it, worst that happens is we find you vacuuming in it.
Fierce Critter Posted September 10, 2007 Author Posted September 10, 2007 LOL! My husband, who is ordinarily supportive of my fashion wants - kinda is nixing this one. Oh, he'd let me go get it if I really wanted to, he's not a jerk. But he did reiterate that I do NOT have any kind of place to wear a dress like this, and frankly, he's right. I wouldn't wear it to CC for the simple reason that I wouldn't want the hem dragging in the muck on their floor. And should I have to go to the bathroom... well, I think they're cleaner than in the past. But there still is often water - and god knows what else - on the floor. No, a dress like this would require the whole get-up - meaning especially shoes, the type of which I NEVER wear. I'd have to get some kind of cute, strappy sandals. Right now, my "dress" shoes consist of several different types of black leather boots with varying levels of platform heels. :D And then there's the point that I'm not a loner - I have a husband. And a dress like that would probably mean going to an event that would have my husband in a tux. Not that that wouldn't look sweeet - but we're freaking lowbrows, and more likely to go to an outdoor church carnival or state fair than a formal dance. I was mostly interested at this point because I could go get it from the woman nearby right now, vs. ordering from China later. But I was browsing the company's other gowns on eBay, and OMG - they have the most gorgeous, fairy-tale princess dresses at criminally cheap prices - and very, very few are getting bids. I'm sure it's because of the whole China backlash, and probably because they probably are made by nearly slave labor. And yes, that sort of thing gives me pause. But goddamn it, I can't get a dress that beautiful that cheap from a local shop, you know? Some of their dresses:
pomba gira Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 You want to be really, really careful buying from China-based eBay sellers. Aside from the fact that the sizes run quite small, ripping off gwailo is apparently a national point of honor. China, Taiwan, Hong Kong- I won't buy from any of 'em anymore.
