Somebody Played Whack-a-mole With Jon's Face Today

Jon had a door to fix at a small grocery in Detroit, on Warren near Moross. When he got there around 8:00-8:30, the front door was locked. So he went around the back and found nobody.

As he came back around the side and got near the front of the building again, somebody hit him. He thinks it was with a board or 2x4 or something. The guy kinda grabbed him at the same time as Jon went down, ripping his shirt. He got Jon's wallet out of his pocket, and his cellphone.

Jon was never out cold, but he was so shocked and dazed that he stayed down, thank goodness. Heard the guy run away, and got up and got into his work truck and went back to his shop's base in Madison Heights.

They arranged for a police report, and sent him to the clinic. They did some prelims, gave him 800mg ibuprofin for pain, and wrote a scrip for him to go to Beaumont in Royal Oak for x-rays and a CT scan.

My phone is off at night, and my Dad showed up at the house at 11:00 to tell me what happened. I immediately called Jon, and arranged to meet him back at his shop and take him to the hospital. My dad went with me, and then took my van back home while I went with Jon in his work truck.

He's got a black eye, swollen slightly on the right side of his eye and eyebrow, swollen cheek, and fat lip on the right side. He's got some pain.

Mostly he's shook-up. Angry, and just basically thrown for a MAJOR loop.

I hope the mutherfucker who did this has a MAJOR heart attack when he sees there is NO MONEY in that wallet, and only a credit and debit card that are EXPIRED.

And the cellphone is a model from 3 fucking years ago and already shut down.

Jon didn't see the guy except for a black hand swinging down at him once he was falling, black track pants with red stripes, and white sneakers. The store had cameras, and there will be follow-up to see if anything got captured.

Got him a new license today, with a gorgeous mugshot of his swollen face.

We are now putting plans to move up north into overdrive. This was a horrible way to convince Jon to get his ass in gear toward doing something else for a living, and going where we want to be.

Fucking Detroit.

I'm thinking about taking a picture of his face to share. This morning, the purple below his eye spread to the upper lid. Swelling went down in his lip, but now the purple area on that shows more.

He took today off too, paid. I'm glad. We're going for sympathy pizza buffet at CiCi's in Westland. Nummy.

wow. so sorry to hear this, I hate it when good people are preyed upon......I know its incredibly frustrating to be on teh receiving end of something so random and not be able to even see your assailant....kind of makes it harder to deal with, some nameless faceless asshole......but on the blessing side if it brought you to Westland for pizza I'd ahve met you there...arrrgghhh, theres the real crime....

Thanks for all the really, really kind and concerned responses. Jon has been reading them right along and they've lifted his spirits.

This is the first time anything like this happened to any of the company's guys - and I find that surprising. They send them all over the worst parts of town, with no means of defense, no buddy system, no checks in place to be sure someone will be on site to meet these guys.

Jon has been in confrontations with COD customers who refuse to pay, who have threatened him, to the point where he now refuses to push anything - if they argue with him, he just tells the company and they blacklist the customer.

A few weeks ago, he called me from the road to tell me he'd witnessed a gunfight break out. Saw a couple guys arguing, and one of them pulled a gun and started shooting.

And the husband of their former secretary is a locksmith. Jon's done some side work with him before. He was driving down Conant and some kind of road rage thing happened and the vehicle took off without major incident. He stopped to check in at the place he was going to work, and the vehicle returned and he started to run - they shot him with a shotgun. He's still got pellets in him, they got his face, his arm, his torso, back and chest. He won't work in Detroit at all anymore. He has the luxury - it's his own business. Jon isn't so lucky.

There's another door company in the area, Great Lakes. Employees of Detroit Door and other door companies tend to float amongst the various companies around town. Within the past few months, several people have left DD and gone to Great Lakes. One of them is trying to get Jon in there. Problem is, DD is suing Great Lakes for "stealing employees". So they're gun-shy about hiring anyone from there right now. Jon's been calling the guy doing the hiring pretty regularly. And we finally sent out resumes to several people there so they can have some kind of proof that Jon approached them first. Fingers crossed - this place hires in in the low $20's, and they also serve the entire state of Michigan - including Traverse City. If Jon gets in down here, he can put in for a transfer north later on.
