DJDeadbeat Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 Yeah, you try telling our scene (or most other scenes) that and see where it lands you. I'll tell you where, bickering with a guy like me about it. Granted in the traditional sense neither genre belongs near each other, but both are so small that they just threw them together to fill in the gaps and the stuff you could dance to easily won out since the DJs want to get warm bodies on the floor most of all. I spin old electro, Kid Creole, and Jan & Dean when I DJ, despite me being tagged as a goth DJ, those aren't goth bands and won't get considered such though. You can mix genres, not matter how small, it doesn't make them goth if you put them together.
DJDeadbeat Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 DEVO is my goth band..! D > Hell ya! Gates of Steel is totally Xymoxin' me maaaan!

This is true, however it really pisses me off when DJ's play ONE Sisters of Mercy song at or near the BEGINNING of the night and think they can claim it as a "goth night". Hell, most places these days don't even play the one song. Then the people listing fuck up and start thinking "oh these other bands must be goth too then". Then the entire scene forgets what goth music actually is and this is why we can't have nice things.

Thats how City Club, Necto, etc still get considered goth clubs, because that Sisters or Siouxsie song get played...followed by 00ntz by the barrel full! Makes me want to start a funk night at Clutch Cargos because I sometimes spin Cybotron or Grandmaster Flash when I DJ....then Cinema Strange, TSOL, Rudimentary Peni, Adicts, Sex Gang. You know, like a funk DJ tends to do.

Joey Deadcat Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 My Goth band.... THEATRE OF ICE. And, I'll be damned! Macolm...how'd you get here?
MALCOMXBLISS Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 And, I'll be damned! Macolm...how'd you get here? Googled my way here. Detroit is pretty close to Columbus.
Joey Deadcat Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 Googled my way here. Detroit is pretty close to Columbus. Now to educate them on Theatre Of Ice!
MALCOMXBLISS Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 Now to educate them on Theatre Of Ice! I was hoping to not be discovered so early on. That way I could pretend to not be self promoting.
Necromanta Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 My Goth band.... THEATRE OF ICE. Mm, horror film music.
Destroit Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 I dunno in fact, convos and debates like this always make me laugh, there's always these "old schoolers" and musical elitests that say something isn't this just because "it wasn't that way in the 80's" or because that's not what it's supposed to be traditionally defined as, but seriously times change and thank god you know? I would be fucking pissed if goth and goth music were constantly the same. What is goth now was not goth in 1985, I'll tell you that much. "Goth" is what the majority of the "goth" population make of it, not what a few musical elitests up on their high horse have to say about it. So if the majority of goth people are beginning to associate synthpop/EBM/industrial with goth, then to me, it's now new goth. I dunno, that's just my two cents, if something makes me feel creeped out, dark, angry, eerie, etc, then to me it's goth. To me "goth" music is created by a feeling that you get from it and the impression that it leaves on you, not by "which band is classified here" kinda pompous labeling bullshit, judged by people that just sit around and listen to music all day long and don't do much else. Or by people who DJ a few nights here at some local club or something and there and think they're like, world renown experts or something.
Joey Deadcat Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 What is goth now was not goth in 1985 It's now deathrock.

Deathrock is people taking back what goth should be, dark, passionate post-punk music. Cyber"goths" might be embracing EBM, futurepop and all of that, but as I said a thousand goths love AFI, Ours, Smashing Pumpkins, it doesn't make them goth. You can associate what you want with goth, but if it doesn't have the panache and aestetic that makes music goth, then it isn't. Trance, powernoise, industrial dance isn't even dark. And besides, i've heard DARK TRANCE and DARK TECHNO before, like DeNiro and Synergy, but it doesn't make them goth. Lots of blues singers talked about death and darkness, doesn't make them goth. Billie Holiday covered Gloomy Sunday, she wasn't a goth singer.

I listen to a lot of batcave, deathrock and goth rock, ANNNNNNNNDDDD even occasionally APHEX TWIN. APHEX TWIN MUST BE GOTH BECAUSE THEY'RE SPOOKY SOMETIMES!! And because some goths like them! Yussss!

DJDeadbeat Posted September 20, 2007 Posted September 20, 2007 HAHA @ that. Goth is music that creates feeling and leaves an impression. Nothing about dark (post-)punk or dark-wavey music or even dark anarcho or psychobilly. But just music that makes you FEEEL. Of course.
