Der Nister Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 A Protected area? Are there that many offensive topics that it needs to be protected? Just curious.
phee Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 A Protected area? Are there that many offensive topics that it needs to be protected? Just curious. I was not aware it was protected....
odims_sphere Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 I was not aware it was protected.... Only to non members. If you're logged in it's not. I dunno why though, maybe as incentive to join?
Der Nister Posted October 17, 2007 Author Posted October 17, 2007 I have to re-sign in everytime I want to read anything in the music forum. Is it just me??
SuZQZ Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 I just popped in and out of it a few times from the main page and didn't have any problems.
SuZQZ Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 Did you change your cookie settings or anything?
Der Nister Posted October 18, 2007 Author Posted October 18, 2007 Haven't changed any settings - it happens on my gf's computer as well. I can't figure out why it happens. (?)
Wooleybooley Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 Yeah. that happens with me as well. I can view threads from other areas of the site without logging in ( when I get an email and come here from the link ) but it blocks me when I try to view anything in the music section ( ironically the section of the DGN board I hang out in the most )
jadnifer Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 I never had a problem with it. The only one that I have to occasionally sign back into is the sexuality forum...which is understandable.
Homicidalheathen Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 It is for me too if I have logged out and always was on this new board.
Scales Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 For me this is always restricted when I'm signed out. Doesn't make much sense, I'm guessing there was some sort of privacy issue that came up to make it happen, but whatever. o-o
Necromanta Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Strange.. you must need to change some kind of settings.
GothicRavenGoddess (3) Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 make sure that your security setting is on medium... i had that same problem until i changed it. its under internet options (which can be found under "tools" at the top of your browser window). don't set it on low, or you'll get no prtection.. good luck. hope that helps
the eternal Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 I figured it was an incentive to get more members
Troy Spiral (13) Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 "Protected" is probably a misleading error message. "Requires Login" is what would be more accurate. Its a longstanding philosophy issue about how best to encourage participation in online communities. There are article upon article about all the various details about what makes an online community tick. There's a lot of different theories, but a common consensus is that at least one area of the community should require the bare minimum participation level. That is, to to the board. Once someone takes the time to make an account, and log in they've at least spent a tiny fraction of time "committing" to using your website. You don't want the whole website that way or there is no content for them to view / read to encourage that participation in the first place. You can go round and round with what parts of a board, features or what sections (if any) to require a log in to view. Typically the suggestion is to have whatever the most used, or second most used part of your board is (or most bandwidth intensive) part of a community require a log in to use/view. Rather than say.. restrict pictures the lucky section was the music section. Its always debatable but i definitely did a lot of homework on this one over the years. There are a lot more issues involved than just what it may seem on the surface.
Der Nister Posted November 2, 2007 Author Posted November 2, 2007 You know - it doesn't ask me to re login anymore. That was the whole reason I started this thread. I don't mind it being protected but when I am signed in I hated having to log in again to read the music forum. I don't know what happened but it works fine. Go figure.
GothicRavenGoddess (3) Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 its cuz you bitched about it, and Sir Troy explained it, and ta-da!... its secrets devulged, and now it can't do shit just to spite you... Take that music forum! Ha! *waved plastic pirate sword left over from Halloween at the music forum, hoping its thoroughly intimidated*
