Ah that time of year is upon us again - Sweetest Day! Another day to remind us that:

-We have no significant other, or

-our significant other is far away, or

-our significant other has more important things to do than spend time with us, or

-our significant other is spending time with someone else, or

-we plan on guilting our significant other into spending way too much money on flowers, candy, and a card, or

-it's a day to do something sweet and/or romantic with your partner, or

-we have a wonderful significant other that loves us and we don't need some dumb-ass holiday to remind us of that.

Celebrate it, piss on it, do what you want.

My boyfriend gave me tigerlillies last night at midnight.

I probably didn't deserve it either, I was being kind of a bitch last night.

SO or not, it's a Hallmark holiday. If you don't like it, ignore it. Personally I think it's good to do something nice for each other that day. Not that you should need a day to remind you to do something nice for your SO, but sometimes it helps when you've been together a long time and start to take each other for granted. As far as buying a present just to give your SO a Sweetest Day present, nah, skip it.

Sweetest day has historical precedent - in one single small town. I forget the entire history (wikipedia it yourself), but it was a day they set aside for parades and some other fun little-town stuffs.

So Hallmark hears about it and thinks CHA$CHING$

I have told Jon he is off the hook for Sweetest Day. I couldn't care less. Our anniversary is at the end of October, and that's more important.

This is only the second Sweetest Day I'm not working. My parent's use to own a flower shop, so Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and Sweetest Day only meant an extra day of work for me after working 40+ hours at my regular job. The shop's been closed two years now, and it still seems very weird that I am not selling flowers all day. When I had a significant other, I always suggested just going out for a nice dinner, one, because I was usually too exhausted to cook, and two, because I don't buy into needing a day set aside for acknowledging your "sweetie". It should be done throughout the year, in little ways and in your actions, to let the person know how special they are to you.

Regardless, I wish all of you, my sweet, sweet DGN friends a Happy Sweetest Day. May you have a great day regardless of whether you celebrate or not.

He took the time to run my hair extensions out to me 2 cities over without complaint, without sighing, without protest.

Sweetest Day makes no sense to me. There's already valentine's day, why do we need two? Or if we need two, why not two halloweens, or two of holidays where work is closed...Labor Day Redux on December 15, give everybody an extra day off!

Why can't we just come up with something to say to someone on our own, instead of wastin $5 on a card ?

I think that it would be alot more personable if we looked our loved ones in the eyes and expressed our feelings and sentiment, instead of sayin: "oh here's yer card"

In fact, until I read this thread, I had completely forgotten that it even existed.

If you just "have" to get a card, get one that's blank inside and then compose the inside greeting yourself, in pen, so the person knows it came from you.

I don't yet know how anyone else feels about this, but I think that would be a good thing to do, rather then just get some mass produced inpersonal card that 50 bajillion other people are probably recieving.

There is no true holiday as "Sweetest Day" it is only for Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and I think Wisconsin. Made up only because Memorial Day, Labour Day, and 4th of July are the WORST card selling months. After Father's day, they got nothing.

So, they all got together and said "Hey, we need money... and Valentines Day is WAY too far away, soooo... hey, who likes the sound of Sweetest Day?"

Seriously, that's pretty much how it got started. The gap from Father's day til Thanksgiving is a downer, but thats their fault.
