Be careful, you can plug in some innocuous looking device to your computer, and SURPRISE! You have a virus.

Thats one hell of a sneaky way to deliver viruses, leave it to Wal-Mart and other retailers that love to import products from China.must have some bad employees in the factories.

You could get a Mini. $600 and you use your current keyboard and monitor. Or get a used one.

and get all the new and fancy mac viruses and malware that are starting to come to the for as Mac rises in the market.

then there is that whole point about the new Mac OS having more bugs in it that Vista.

or you could just keep a good av software up to date

There are just a few Mac "viruses". They are, pretty much, all theoretical exploits or hacks that use social engineering.

I've had my hackintosh virus free for over a year now without any kind of protection. Prior to that I had to spend significant money and time... a lot of time... keeping up with all the anti spyware and antivirus stuff. And still got shit on my system. The reality for Mac owners is that our lives are far more pain free then on a PC. Period.

The OSX/Leap-A worm spreads via the iChat instant messaging system, forwarding itself as a file called latestpics.tgz to contacts on the infected users' buddy list. When the latestpics.tgz archive file is opened on a computer it disguises its contents with a JPEG graphic icon in an attempt to fool people into thinking it is harmless.

The worm uses the text "oompa" as an infection marker in the resource forks of infected programs to prevent it from reinfecting the same files.

"Some owners of Mac computers have held the belief that Mac OS X is incapable of harboring computer viruses, but Leap-A will leave them shellshocked, as it shows that the malware threat on Mac OS X is real," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos. "Mac users shouldn't think it's okay to lie back and not worry about viruses."

In your advocacy for the Mac... when are you ever going to address the fact that OSx currently has more bugs than a 3 day old corpse in the woods?

I didn't say there weren't ANY viruses. You just pointed to one. One. Would you like me to make a list of what exists for XP and Vista? Wiki says 200,000...

Every operating system and application has bugs. That's life. How about a link or three that lists those? Whatever those bugs are, they aren't affecting my experience in in either Leopard or Tiger.

Over 20% of the installed base of OSX bought Leopard in the first couple months. Can Vista say that? No... because people are actively staying away. It took them a year to get to 10%. Leopard did that in it's first week. You can take pot shots at OSX all day long. I've used both Windows and Mac a lot over the past few years. Have you? Can you honestly sit there and criticize it when you haven't even used it for some length of time?

I haven't seen that. I've had a couple issues with mine. Nothing majour (besides the case breakage, which Apple immediately repaired). I have a slight screen flicker that is worse sometimes than others ... as for the OS, I've only had mine freeze on me a of couple times (literally maybe 5 in the entire time I've had it). That is it. I've had no other problems with mine.

I have a MacBook. I got it a year ago this past October ... so it's pushing a year and a half now. I don't have the latest OS that just came out, I have the one before it. I probably won't upgrade anytime soon, I can't see the point really, the new one doesn't add much more than what I have now.

Sure, it took a little while to get comfortable with the operating system, and buying software for it ... ick. But luckily I haven't needed anything but iWork, which is relatively easy to find. Kind of annoyed that iWork doesn't have a spreadsheet program like Office does, but I didn't want to pay as much as they wanted for Office for Mac at the time, so it's a trade off.

As for viruses, I know they are out there. I don't actively have to load my computer with the anti-virus and the firewall, which is known to cause a software conflict with this program ... blah, blah ... I don't have to worry about that anymore. I just have to be mindful of what I'm doing and not download things from unknown sources. Not click links from people I don't trust ... you know the drill.

I'm not saying the Mac doesn't have it's downsides ... it does ... but they are so few and far between compared to the Windows machines I've had that I really wouldn't hesitate to buy another Mac tomorrow.

As for cost, I paid somewhere in the vicinity of $1500 for this one (with the three year warranty). I paid no less than $1700 for my Windows based laptops (warranty not included). The last one being a Toshiba multimedia laptop for $2000, that lived for just over a year, with issues. So this was actually a lot cheaper.

Based on my previous expierience, my desktop and two laptops of mine would have died by now (in the time I've had this Mac) if I was still using PC's.

If only I hadn't been scared of the switch from the Windows to the Mac years ago ... it would have saved me a lot of money and time.

Gaf, I'm not saying your opinion is wrong ... it just differs from mine. I know people who are happy with their Windows machines, I know people who haven't had an issue with their Windows machines. Unfortunately, I was never one of those people.

I have been using and supporting Macs for 15 years. I don't talk about it alot because frankly I hate Mac OS.. I always have.. in all of it's incarnations. I dislike the fact that you have to disconnect your brain to use it.

One thing the hard figures have shown is that OS X's reputation as a relatively secure operating system is unwarranted, Secunia said. This year and last year Secunia tallied 36 advisories on security issues with the software, many of them allowing attackers to remotely take over the system - comparable to figures on operating systems such as Windows XP Professional and Red Hat Enterprise Server.

I do. I know I do. I'll be the first to admit it.
