Short exposures show the details of the moons surface. Long ones show the redish cast and detail in the shadows.

Marc...you stole my thread! I was just coming down here to post the same thing.

I've never seen a lunar eclipse, it's pretty sweet. It's odd how the shadow is kinda reddish orange. More like a rust color, really. I've only seen a solar eclipse and it was when I was eight.

It's not easy to shoot. It moves just fast enough that the slowish shutter speeds needed to capture it when it's almost covered means it's hard to not blur it. Forget about trying without a tripod.

I have 44 photos at varying exposures. There's a few other decent ones. The rest are no big deal or blurry/bad. I'll see if a few more are worth posting. What's really interesting is the reddish color doesn't show up until about a third of the moon is covered...

Oh yay! I went out and seen it. Even got Emily out of bed to go see it because she is so into that stuff. Tried to get pictures with my camera. Didn't work and I said to Phee "I hope Marc's getting pictures of this!"

I had never seen one before. I don't know why. Just never paid attention before, I guess.

It turned sort of an ember color from all of the sunsets and sunrises on earth shining on it at once.... pretty amazing

The color is because non-direct light is still hitting it and is filterd through the Earth's atmosphere. The more dust in the atmosphere, the more red it is.

I think this is like the 3rd or 4th one I have watched.

BTW... the bright star to the left of the moon is Saturn and the one to the right is Regulas which can only been seen during a Lunar eclipse.

i thought the "fullness" was to last for 51 mintues (i think that's what i read) i saw it around 10:15, and the sliver was there...

eh, maybei just wasn't meant to see it...

I saw it too. It was beautiful. So, the total red color was when the moon was completely behind the Earth's shadow? It's the Earth's atmosphere that causes the red color correct?

Did it have any of the turquoise color last night at all?

it's the dusts in Earth's atmosphere. Volcanic ash, dust from the deserts and wind erosion...

I knew you'd get pics, Marc, so I didn't bother with setting up my camera and tripod. I'd never get the shots you could.

We started watching it around 8:50 and kept peeking back now and again until it was close to being totally eclipsed. That's when I woke Jordan up to see it. She was excited to see it and thought it was really cool, as we all did.
