Kwame Is A No Show At Work Today!

DETROIT -- There was no sign of Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick at his office this morning, less than two hours before Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy is expected to announce whether intimate text-message exchanges between the mayor and his former chief of staff are enough to warrant felony charges that could lead to him being forced from office

As of 9:30 a.m., Kilpatrick hadn't arrived at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center but four police bodyguards were posted outside the building's Randolph Street entrance, where the mayor usually enters.

Worthy's investigation stemmed from the aftermath of the city's decision to settle claims made by three former Detroit police officers, two of whom had won a $6.5 million whistle-blower verdict against the city last September after they claimed they were punished for investigating claims against the mayor and his bodyguards.

Former Deputy Chief Gary Brown said he was fired after investigating claims by Harold Nelthrope, an officer who said he feared for his life after he passed on concerns about the mayor's bodyguards.

After the trial, Mike Stefani, one of the officers' attorneys, obtained a copy of the text messages sent and received from Beatty's city-issued SkyTel pager. He had asked for them during the preparation for the trial but did not receive them.

During negotiations over his attorney fees, Stefani told one of Kilpatrick's city-paid lawyers that he had the messages and was going to tell the trial judge. That information spurred the lawyers to quickly reach a settlement on the case a little over a month after Kilpatrick had vowed to appeal.

As part of that settlement, the officers got a total of $8.4 million and Stefani was required to turn over all copies of the text messages to the mayor's attorney -- and agree never to talk about them.

When the city council approved the settlement, however, it was not told about the text messages or the secret deal meant to hide them from public view.

Then in January, published excerpts of the text messages strongly contradicted Kilpatrick and Beatty's testimony that they did not have a romantic relationship and did not fire Brown.

Im excited to hear if hes going to trial or not

He's being charged!

12 total counts so far, some for him alone, some for both, some for her [beatty] alone.

They're still sobpenaing documents.

nihil glory, trust me, just go to the smoking gun. They'll have it on the front page.

This is more good for the city than it is bad, I think... what do you guys think?

I'm conflicted on how I feel about it. On the one hand I don't live in detroit so it doesn't directly affect me, so I *shouldn't* care. On the other hand this is so high profile that it would seem likely that this would have lasting effects on the entire south eastern michigan area, and quite possibly the whole state.

i feel as tho this is a step forward in officials going to court

this is questionably michigans 2nd most high ranking office position in my opinion first being gov. obviously

being mayor of a major city has major responsabilities and as a public official everything he does is a public matter.

If he is tried and convicted it will show meaning that high ranking public officials are subject to the same criminal courts we the people are

Him not leaving office gives us the ability for the first time not seeing a major public offical in a controlling position resign as a barganing chip for not having to serve jailtime. This is a major step forward in my eyes for the entire country to stop catering to our lawmakers who think they are above the rules they doctrine in courts.

Instead of just leaving office and everything being all hunky dory they can get processed they can and WILL start serving time if he is convicted.

Personally i liked what hes done continuing with archers developments hes has helped make downtown detroit one of the most safest city centers to go to...

Detroit maybe one of the most unsafe cities to go to but statistics show our downtown is one of the most safe ever. revitalization efforts as of recent are commended and im glad hes done what he did. i dont belive playing tribute to coleman young was a good thing to do, but i like what kwame has done for the most part

however

what happens if your looking at porn constantly on company computers? you get fired correct? thats company property you do not violate the sanctity of it you dont spend company money and time for your bad habits.

same goes when you are responsible for a city you do not spend taxpayers money to fund your bad habits and sexual exploits

as it relates to wayne county, mrs. worthys job is secure with her other metro detroit constiuants whom will applaud this effort to remove some form of corruption and i will say that little scandel alone costing the city for their time and money with the phones on top of the settlement money paid for by the city with him hiding documents from the taxpayers eyes and then having to pay for that on top of legal fees

thats corruption in its basic sense. i applaud the prosicution office and i hope kwame gets made an example of

Alls I have to say is this: One down, Granholm to go. So let's hope she fucks up real bad somehow .

Fiiiine...not likely I know. I guess at least having Kwame gone is better than having both of them in office, I'll try to look at it in that light.

the rumor mill has stated before this happend when kwames mother was to retire he was going to run for her position

Do you have to live in Detroit to have to sit on the jury panel for this case? I thought that you actually had to live in that city, but I could be wrong.
