Charlton Heston, who won the 1959 best actor Oscar as the chariot-racing "Ben-Hur" and portrayed Moses, Michelangelo, El Cid and other heroic figures in movie epics of the '50s and '60s, has died. He was 84.

The actor died Saturday night at his home in Beverly Hills with his wife Lydia at his side, family spokesman Bill Powers said.

Powers declined to comment on the cause of death or provide further details.

Didn't he have a stroke a few years ago that limited his ability to speak? another of the greats gone.

I would imagine his suffering from alzheimer's syndrome did not help...

Suprized i hadn't heard of this already. I've watching the news quite a bit today (aka too tired to read and to sick, on and off to be at the computer lol) I did like his movies for the most part, didn't always agree with his politics, but i tend to respect people that actually get INVOLVED in politics and/or take the time to take an interest , rather than just do nothing (or just ignore the issues totally) and complain about people that do for their opinions.

I'm trying not to laugh at critters comment. I think I'll make it. Despite my inherent waiting period after someone died before i think cracks are appropriate. lol.
