NYPD scuba divers rescued a 40-lb. beaver from the East River after they spotted the animal struggling while on security detail for the pope's visit.

A 40-pound beaver was rescued Friday from the East River by NYPD scuba and harbor cops patrolling the waters near the United Nations to safeguard Pope Benedict.

The cops saw the 4-foot-long beaver about 12:45 p.m. floundering in the West Channel of the East River.

NYPD Lt. John Harkins, commanding officer of the police scuba unit, said the animal was tilted unnaturally and showed "labored breathing."

The cops had just finished checking the sea wall for explosives, Harkins said.

NYPD Officer John Angus lassoed the struggling animal in a safety noose and pulled it on the back of the harbor boat.

The cops placed the beaver in a large bucket and refreshed it with water as they took it to the E. 34th Street ferry dock.

The beaver was later taken to an animal medical center for a checkup, cops said.

In all seriousness though, I am glad that they saw it and were able to rescue it. Hopefully, they will be able to return it to a safe place soon.

btw... 40 pounds is 20 pounds under weight for an adult Beaver.

Trust me the East New York River is No place for a beaver. Far too much sea traffic, and out and out pollution.

Jon and I rescued an orphaned baby beaver when we were in NC. I have video of her, including swimming around in our bathtub with a little water & some canned veggies we stupidly thought she'd eat.

We handed her over the same night to a rescue facility in Raleigh. Turns out she was probably still nursing, so we just felt even more stupid having tried to give her canned veggies.

She was adorable. I need to transfer our VHS to DVD so I can get freeze-frames to share.
