To vaccinate or not

I'm all for choice when it comes to vaccinations for children. I personally have decided not to vaccinate my child due to various controversies surrounding vaccines. This decision is highly personal. Yet the one thing I HATE more than anything is ignorant people telling me that my child CANNOT attend school without having them. HELLO?!! Haven't you heard about the waiver? Yes, I have a signed copy from his pediatrician. Yes, I signed it too. It really ticks administrators off when you know the law.

While I have chosen to vaccinate my kids, I respect the pro-choice aspect of this issue.

Oh yeah, and doctors, schools, etc. really DO hate it when you know the law. I havean 11 year old son with Asperger's Syndrome, and I've done nothing but fight for his rights since we discovered that something "just wasn't right" about him. I'll do it for both of my kids. It's my job.

Well, there's good and bad to both, really.

Small Pox was virtually wiped out, thanks to vaccinations, but a lot of what pharmeceutical companies is to sell vaccines for non-fatal illnesses, like Chicken Pox, is blatant propaganda using extreme (not to mention extremely rare) cases of what could happen if a child gets, say, chicken pox and either gets improperly treated for it or, quite possibly, had something else wrong with him to begin with.

Measles, mumps and chicken pox are relatively non-fatal and, if taken care of properly, aren't really much of an issue at all.

On the other hand, it *is* true what they say about getting chicken pox being better when you're younger. I didn't get it until I was ten and it was near-fatal (though, thankfully, my mother was a nurse who knew well enough to get me to a hospital when my temperature got higher than "normal" for a kid with chicken pox. As an added bonus, I think I got sick enough to take time off from school once from the age of ten to the age of eighteen, after the chicken pox, so, yes, what doesn't killl you often can, in fact make you stronger.

There are pro's and con's but I personally would have it done. The only vaccination I would worry about is for the flu virus's that change yearly. It is better if you get chicken pox at an earlier age cuz it is worst when your older. You can't always trust that other children aren't carrying potential illness's and have been vaccinated for that reason. Mumps and measles are painful so I wouldn't want to watch my kid going through that.

Yes, I agree. What I do not agree with is the propaganda out there and the health departments telling me that my child HAS to have them.

A little background on me: I actually worked on the rMMR vaccine and witnessed the testing before it was ok'd to be used. What was horrible, is that the rMMR was not disclosed as being "tested". I will not allow my child to be used as a guinea pig.

I got my children vaccinated, especially my 11-year old daughter who was born with a heart defect. 2 years ago I went ahead and got her the chicken pox vac. because of the heart problem and the very high possibilty that she could have serious problems if she developed chicken pox.

I don't think that vac. is for everyone though.. for the most part many of these "childhood" illness's don't pose any serious threats to healthy kids today.

It's a big enough issue, ManicQueen that an injury compensation was established. You can read more about it here: http://www.909shot.com/Issues/Comp_Summary.htm

A child can still get the chicken pox even if they have the vaccination! My son did. It was just a "mild" case. But enough to keep him home for a week.

Her cardiologist said that if she does get them it would be milder case, like you said, and "hopefully" less complications and less stress on her heart too.

Thanks for the info, pixiefae =)

One possibility of what made me the man I am today. I'm not complaining, but it could have been way worse. I could be rocking back and forth with a helmet on like so many of my elementry classmates. At least I know I can take care of myself when the time comes and won't have to rely on S.S.I. Then again who knows, I might not be as mentally advanced as I am now if I didn't hvae it. Trading genius for social ineptitude wasn't so bad I guess. But maybe ignorance really is bliss?..... NEVER
