Sorry... :(

I was just wondering what you defined as underground...

I would say that some of the bands with the best "cult" following are bands like the Residents....

Ani Difranco is an independant artist who's done VERY well for herself. Until more recently, she was kinda underground.....

I know...I love the irony.

Raven LOVES Tech N9ne and says "yeah, he's kept it real because he's TOTALLY underground" I'm just like "Pssshht...yeah in the same way that Skinny Puppy is underground industrial, since ALL goth people know who they are and they even had a video on MTV"

Skinny Puppy was underground back in 1980 something, even still slightly into the early 90's but NOT really.

Tech N9ne calls himself underground at an attempt to seem like he's "keepin' it real" when really he's not. What's sad is how many people think he really is underground...

YOU AREN'T UNDERGROUND IF EVERYONE AND THEIR BROTHER, MOTHER, COUSIN, FATHER, AND BEST FRIEND HAVE HEARD ABOUT YOU.

I don't care if you don't have music videos and aren't on the radio...if you're ridiculously popular and have been in the music business for TWENTY FIVE years like Tech...you've passed the limits of being underground. He's a tool now, really, imo.

wow i sense alot of hatred...

So no one is underground then no matter what in you two opinions any one who has a fan base can't be underground right?

No when you start to have a bigger fan base than artists on MTV, you pretty much can't hide behind the "underground" label anymore. You're not underground when everyone and their brother listens to you, by calling yourself that is poserism in the higest regard, imo.

He just says he's "underground" to try and keep on this facade that he's all keepin' it real and not a sellout, when that's far from the truth. He's definately not underground anymore. When he started? Yes. Now? Of course not.

That would be as ludicrous as saying Juggalos and ICP are underground.

I don't hate Tech N9ne, I like some of his shit, a lot of it I can't stand (because I've heard it like 800 times), but I like some. Still, he shouldn't be walking around labeling himself something he's not, is all.

Oh...and he ripped off Yoko Kanno and probably didn't even give her credit. Literally stole her song. If he gave her credit that's one thing, but I don't respect artists usually that sample huge chunks of obscure music thinking that just because it's from Japan nobody will notice. That was the other thing about him that bothered me. Like I actually had to SHOW some Tech N9ne fan-friends of mine the actual episode of Cowboy Bebop that song was in just for them to believe me. When artists rip something from another artist and pass it off as their own, they lose my respect.

Even if he did give her credit, nobody knows it (like I said, all my TN people I hang out with did NOT believe me because heaven forbid I accuse Tech of not being original), and still he took almost the entire song.

I went to his concert last summer with my boyfriend though, I had a good time. Nice pit. I like stuff like Psycho Bitch, Caribou Lou...Midwest Choppers was good. So like I said, don't think I hate the guy, but yeah I just had those two issues with him as an artist.

To me, most underground is bands that are just starting out, and staying local to the area. Every Place has their underground scene, even podunk places like Clio. In this way, being underground isn't keeping it real, that can be done on a local scale, or world wide scale. Being underground means being unknown to the masses. You either get big, or you stay underground.

I do belive though, that for bands that do find themselves growing popular in more areas, though they surface somewhat and are discovered, but if they're not accepted by radio play or whatever, they can still be underground.

Yes, ICP is, and at the same time isn't underground. They're too well known to be true underground, yet they're not radio sell outs and though one of the bigger bands, not in the main main spotlight. But in this comparisom, any band not as popular as another could be considered underground.. wich means that the only artist that ISN'T underground is the most popular artist.. wich is arguable who it is.

Underground to me is a very unclear line, and is left up to one's self to determine if it's underground or not.

I go by the subculture the artists are in. Metal could be considered underground compared to the other genre's out there, but I don't consider it underground as a genre it's self. But in each genre, you can have your slightly popular to that genre yet still underground on the bigger scale.

Trying to stray away from industrial...since we're on a goth board and everyone on here knows about underground industrial/gothic/ebm bands (or should  i.e. detroitGOTHIC.net)

Uhmmm hmmm...Benni Benassi at this point is no longer underground.

How's 'bout Ferry Corsten? I don't think he's had anything on the radio/MTV but has a pretty big following in the techno scene. Like I said though, I'm rusty, he may have made it bigger by now for all I know. Same with Bad Boy Bill...I was so upset when I missed him at DEMF two years ago.

Frou Frou/Imogen Heap is probably not considered underground at this point, but still good shit. I'm listening to Frou Frou as I speak.

Yeah underground speaking I know pretty much only industrial/techno.

OHHH Miss Kitten! I ADORE MISS KITTEN OMFG! If you don't know who the fuck she is the look up her MySpace, REALLY SEXY techno/dance, sleazy sounding, very nice flow, and her voice is ridiculously mesmerizing and she DOES have a big following. She has that song "Frank Sinatra" that was in the movie Party Monster, so if that gives you any clue to whom I'm talking 'bout. If you still don't know because you haven't seen Party Monster (which is nuts because nobody's life can truely be complete without witnessing such an awesome based-SEVERELY-on-a-true-story-move) then wtf...go rent Party Monster.

Underground is a very fuzzy line, but it's not based on my opinion, though I would know a little more then some.

Underground music is, IMHO, musical acts or groups that have HUGE followings all over, but don't have record deals/ are indie labeled, and they MAY get some radio play, but not enough to spark national media attention..though they have LARGE fan bases in from coast to coast

you want good bands/ acts like that??

Nimbus

Crazy Anglos

Fran Cosmo

Sixstitch (one of my absolute favs)

Fixer (another major fav)

Echovalve

there are tons of others....why does Tech 9 not fit as an indie artist??...because honestly, there are HUGE numbers of ppl all over who wouldn't give a rats ass about T9 if it wasn't for Critical Bill and those damn ICP losers....if you need OTHER acts to keep you alive as an artist, you should give it up...honestly.
