Anyone have any opinions on Mephistos?

Hey DGN,

I wanted to know if anyone has any feelings about Mephistos in Hamtramack(sp?). I checked out the web site and the place looks nice but that maybe no indication and I have no idea what the area it’s in is like. I'm kind of looking for a little bit of a change up from Necto and my occasional City Club trip. Any input on this would be appreciated. What’s kewl, what sucks etc. I see a lot of stage shows and fetish/fashion shows seem to go through there. Anyone checked any of that out?

It's been awhile since I've been to Mephisto's. What I do remember is all good, though. Hamtramck is a fine area with a high density of bars and performance venues. I definitely recommend checking out Mephisto's and Hamtramck in general. Maybe one of these days I'll go there when there's daylight...

I haven't been there myself, but I have heard that Mephisto's is a good place to hang out. However, I heard that the cover charge was rather steep.

I've always been a fan. Hmmm... been a while since I've been there should go for a visit. Must organize the troops....

Seemed a little pretenteous to me. That and the $10 cover blew ass. The dance floor is the size of my monitor (19") and the midnight Edgar Allen Poe readings was just a little too much. It's a nive place, but it seems like they keep it a little over the top so that they can make it seem like it's exclusive.

Mephisto's rocks, and all the information you need is on the website. I do need to update some of it though.

I DJ every Wednesday and Saturday, and am usually first on the call list if a DJ can't make it. I do all web promotion and PR work and have been involved with the bar since October 12th of last year and have been working there since January.

I'll admit that the dancefloor is small, but considdering you can dance anywhere in the club (in front of the bar has lights too for that reason) it's not so bad. Cover is at most now $7.00 (talked them down a while ago) and on Wednesdays-Fridays it is $3.00. Sometimes it can go up to $16.00 but thats only very rarely and usually for a big name concert or something.

We haven't had any Poe reading for a while. We may finally do the night I wanted to do and have poetry/comedy/amatrue bands come on that night.

As far as it being exclusive, I don't know where anyone would get that idea. It reminds me of every other goth bar I've been to. While it's not completely goth, it does a good job of catering to the gothic/industrial community.

The nice thing about it is if you don't like whats going on, on any particular floor. You can go to another level and everything changes (except for the third which usually has the music from the 2nd carying up to it).

We like to support the local musical and artistic scene with concerts and art galleries. We have snacks we serve free of charge to much on. We also do our best to try to make everyone feel at home (at least I do).

All crap asside, forget that I even work there, and take my word for this. If nothing else you should visit it at least once. I think you'll find you want to come back more often but even if not, it is something new to check out.

If anyone has any questions please feel free to e-mail us at info@mephistosdetroit.com (I answer all the e-mail) and/or check out our Live Journal community too at http://www.livejournal.com/community/mephistoslounge

If you decide to come please say hello if I'm there, also ask for a full tour if the top level is closed. I'll show you that and the back patio (very fun in the summer).

Well, it's been a while since I was there. Just seemed very posh-goth at the time. Everyone seemed to have their noses in the air about how goth they were. Maybe it was just the way it was that one night. Honestly it made me not want to go back, so I

haven't...

Perhaps I'll have to give it another try so as to have a more informed opinion. :smiling:

Hmm, with all this interest in Mephisto's, perhaps we should organize a DGN event.

Well if we're talking a DGN event I can get you in contact with the guy to talk to. If you want you can even rent out the club and make it private on an off day (sun-tues).

Also we are now closed Thursdays "until further notice" just FYI.
