A curious goth...

so..I guess the true question is...does content dictate the genre???

Well it originally did, but now it seems to be about fashion, which is why I think that "gothic metal" and a lot of electronic music are lumped in with goth. Because these genres are relatively new, they looked back to old aesthetics, of which goth's "style" best suited the burgeoning scenes needs.

So...basically clothes determine the music's genre? I...don't quite understand...

No no no, the scenes just have overlapping dress styles sometimes. It's a case of something being mistaken for something it's not.

I am new here and I swear I'm not trying to be rude, but I was wondering why no one here is actually talking about goth music.

Ya mean like Cinema Strange,The Sixteens,Floatings Corpses,Fangs On Fur,The Prids,Orlok,Cemetary Girlz,Last Days Of Jesus,Scarlet's Remains,Bohemien,Joy Disaster,etc? :wink

I am new here and I swear I'm not trying to be rude, but I was wondering why no one here is actually talking about goth music.

I've been wondering the same thing.

I'm no DJ.

I only have maybe four or five hundred CDs, and almost all of them are non-goth (they're every genre)

but it seems like I'm more likely to hear John Denver or Alicia Keys name-dropped than anyone even remotely goth-like.

The only problem is this thread quite soon will devolve into this musical jack-off fest for three underground DJs, who will make themselves happy comparing bands no one else has heard of, and then all the other lurkers will turn elsewhere, feeling insecure and/or alienated because they can't relate.

I would personally like for there to be some environment where the scene could be fostered to the extent where semi-gothy stuff or even darker music is promoted, and then more obscure music can be introduced,

like Pandora for music forum. "If you like this, check this out"

Unfortunately, when we split hairs over what is goth and what isn't

(you could have a heated debate over the album Bloody Kisses, for example, b/w the goth purists and the ones who are drawn in by the dark imagery)

it takes attention away from quality music and leads us down the slippery path that ends here

So Sisters of Mercy is goth, not gothic metal? I love the Sisters to death, but I always thought they sounded really heavy, and if I hadn't gotten into them through the goth scene, I might have thought they sounded more like biker music than goth.

(By the by all the bands I'm mentioning thus far are ones I adore personally.)

That's funny. Maybe their later stuff sound harder. I never viewed them that way.

I absolutely love First and Last and Always. It seems so genuine.

That's a big thing for me.

I love music where you can feel the pain the artist is going through.

For example, the Cure (orig the Easy Cure) took their name from a Nick Drake song.

Drake was a folk singer, but many of his songs were darker than a ton of goth music.

I'd call it goth-folk, but I'm sure there's some bullshit genre out there called goth-folk already

and he wouldn't fit it.

Shit. Well, I only listen to 'goth' on occasion, as Matt can tell you I listen to punk/pop-punk more than anything else and here I am on a goth board. Never be ashamed of your music tastes. It's who you are!! Music is a very important aspect to a persons life and personality traits...but that's just my opinion...

Haha I still could if you wouldn't think it TOO pretentious of me.

I don't think it's possible to think of you as more pretentious at this point.

It's ok.

It's a DJ thing, I suppose.

You seem really nice.

It's just that when we get to the minutae of what is and isn't goth music,

it becomes a bit of a turnoff for those of us that don't spend our lives dedicated to it.

That said,

I would LOVE to see the list

WE ALL WOULD

It would be the most UNpretentious thing you (or anyone) could do.

Because instead of (unintentionally) making people feel badly about their musical tastes,

you would be giving people a list of great music to check out.

AND WHO DOESN'T WANT THAT????

Ya mean like Cinema Strange,The Sixteens,Floatings Corpses,Fangs On Fur,The Prids,Orlok,Cemetary Girlz,Last Days Of Jesus,Scarlet's Remains,Bohemien,Joy Disaster,etc? :wink

Oh boy. Here we go with all the bands that only three DGN DJs have heard about.

Mr. Slippy--I rarely know what the hell either of the the two DJ Deads are talking about when they post all these underground bands.

If you post a list, for g-ds sake, please incl a couple bands that have sold more than a thousand copies.

AND

(and this is a big AND)

IF you have time, post a tiny description for the lesser known ones

(like you'd see in Hollywood pitch meeting)

EXAMPLE: The Hairy Pussies* (think Bauhaus meets the Damned)

Then, not only would people check out the little bands, they'd be looking into the catalog of the major band that they sound like. :sorcerer:

If you have time, of course.

*(btw, the Hairy Pussies is not a real band, or if it is, you'd have to ask Joey Deadcat or DJ Deadbeat about them)

First off, while this is a "goth" board, I don't think anyone here is too worried about whether the music they listen to is officially sanctioned "Gothic". I don't think anyone could be that one-dimensional. While I lean heavily toward darker music, you'll also find things like the Pixies, the Mr. T Experience, Hank Williams, Sr., and even the Bee Gees in my collection.

Second - and this is only my opinion - it bugs the everlovin' shit outta me when a band or artist is forced into a genre or sub-genre just because people can't stand to have something existing outside of a neatly labeled box. Yes, genre-labels are convenient and useful at times, but so often they cease to be a tool and become a constraint. I guess what I'm trying to get across here is that trying to impose order upon all the beautiful chaos can dstract us from the most important thing...simply enjoying the music.

Also, "goth" is more than music; it's style, attitude, philosophy...and everyone's has a little bit of a different take on all of it. We can agree on the basics however, and this is what's kept the scene going in one form or another for so long.

Haha, I was about to say Joey Deadboy has good taste in music. But anyway, I understand that people hate pigeonholing and stereotyping, but hey, I stopped caring whether or not things are, I'm just bothered about misconceptions. And I am assuming that you are one of those "goth is what I make it people," but to me, and many of the goth community, that's like saying Schindler's List is a Space Opera because I want it to be. Besides, I never said there wasn't anything wrong with things that are not goth, or talking about things that are not goth, I was just mentioning the fact that I failed to see any goth posts. I never at any point put down things that weren't goth, I was just attempting to respond to questions I was asked.
