People in Australia are being warned to keep their pets away from kangaroos following a number of attacks on dogs.

A drought there means the desperate marsupials are edging closer to people's houses to look for water.

The problem is worst near Canberra, where tired and thirsty roos have killed at least one small dog.

But animal rights groups have tried to stop a cull ordered by the government last month, saying kangaroos only attack if people get in their way.

"Just because there are a lot of them around here doesn't mean we should not be looking after them," said animal rights protestor Simone Gray.

But kangaroo victims don't agree.

Kangaroos turn mean

One woman in Canberra reported being cornered by kangaroo and says she was scratched and bruised after it took a swipe at her.

Another described how she watched the normally harmless grass-eating animal drown her pet dog by holding it underwater.

Kangaroos can weigh up to 80 kilograms and grow as tall an average man.

Experts say they rarely attack humans, but the fact they are starving could be encouraging them to show a mean streak.

LOL!

This actually reminded of me of a Steve Irwin impression my sister did at the Toledo Zoo awhile back where she commented on how the wallabies were so dangerous and she was therefore going to climb into their pen and try to pet one.
